Gothic Theatre

Sitting south of downtown, this theater came of age in the early '90s, with a steady stream of soon-to-be-famous alternative-rock acts such as Nirvana and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. It still showcases the old and new, from Morgenshtern to T-Pain and Neko Case, but also operates as a community venue for theater, music, and charity events.

Gowanus Yacht Club

Carroll Gardens
Open May through October, this outdoor bar wedged next to a Carroll Street subway entrance is a favorite with fans of both cheap beer (like cans of PBR) and glasses or pitchers of craft brew. Picnic tables line the patio space belonging to the adjacent bagel shop. The menu is driven by the grill, which means hamburgers, hotdogs, kielbasa, and knockwurst. (There’s always a vegan option, too.)

Grails

A quintessential sports bar with a sneakerhead theme, this spot displays some of the world's most coveted kicks, including the rare "Back to the Future" limited edition Nikes---a sneaker collector's dream. The outdoor area is home to rotating murals (often painted live), keeping the Wynwood art vibe alive. The menu consists of classic sports bar bites with an Asian twist—think cheeseburger dumplings and poke nachos. Those looking for a slightly more refined experience can check out its sister concept next door, Spanglish, where cocktails are the main focus and the vibe is more romantic.

Gramps

At this come-as-you-are bar that prides itself on welcoming everyone, there's a decent beer list and even better cocktails. Nightly activities like drag bingo, trivia, and karaoke keep regulars coming back for more. Those looking for late-night munchies can order from the counter at Pizza Tropical, home to some of the best pizza in Wynwood.

Grand Canyon Wine Co.

This cozy wine bar on Route 66 pours Arizona wines by the glass or as part of a flight. You can also purchase a bottle to share with friends or sample tapped beers made by neighboring Historic Brewing Company. Even though the bar doesn't have its own kitchen, it does have a menu featuring pizzas and Caesar salad from its sister restaurant, Station 66, next door.

Grand Central Brewhouse

This taproom and event venue offers everything from lagers and lighter styles to hoppy IPAs and darker beers (including some tasty stouts) and sours. Although it has spacious indoor and outdoor seating areas, you can also grab a seat at the brewery's neighboring LALA expansion, which features French-inspired American cuisine, craft cocktails, and private karaoke rooms.

Granville Moore's

Capitol Hill

Beer and mussels: the appeal is that simple, and they're that satisfying. But the narrow, rustic bars on two floors are as popular with drinkers as diners. The Belgian-themed gastropub has one of the largest selections of beer, from pilsners to Flemish reds, in D.C. If you are hungry, offerings in this cozy spot go beyond mussels, and include steak frites and Flemish dip. Happy hour takes place daily between 5 pm and 7 pm.

Grape Juice

This cozy, art-filled spot beckons you to tuck away into its curtained-off private dining areas or sit and stay awhile on the tree-lined patio. Choose a bottle of wine from the well-curated selection, to enjoy on-site or take home, or choose from the array of craft beer. But definitely don't sleep on the food, which features crave-worthy dishes done right, like the Boom Boom Burger (a brisket burger with cream cheese and candied jalapeño and onions) and "crack-eroni" mac 'n' cheese topped with antelope chili, for lunch or dinner.

The Grass Skirt and Captain's Quarters

Pacific Beach

This pair of speakeasies delights guests with high-theme decor and engaging menus. Entering the nondescript storefront, a sign above the desk in the seemingly cluttered travel agency reads "Other World Travel," but the working kitchen behind offers a hint that all is not as it seems. Accessed through a false freezer door on the left, the Grass Skirt tiki bar serves a wide selection of rum-based tropical cocktails and a menu of shareable pupus in delightfully kitsch surroundings. Venturing through the hidden door to the right transports travelers to the refined Captain's Quarters of a 17th-century sailing vessel where small bites are served alongside a gin-centric cocktail menu. Be sure to reserve a table through the website—these hidden gems are no secret!

The Great American Music Hall

Tenderloin

You'll find top-drawer entertainment at this eclectic venue. Acts range from the best in blues, folk, and jazz to up-and-coming alternative artists. The colorful marble-pillared club, built in 1907 as a bordello, accommodates dancing at some shows. Pub grub is available most nights.

Great Jones Distilling Co.

East Village

Manhattan's first whiskey distillery since Prohibition, this four-floor space is a fun house of sorts for adults who like food and drink: from the basement speakeasy bar to ground-floor gift shop to the second-floor cocktail bar and restaurant serving up pastas, seafood, and burgers. Visitors can also take guided tours, partake in whiskey tastings or cocktail-making classes, or just come to eat and imbibe.

The Great Northern Bar and Grill

A locals' hangout, The Great Northern Bar and Grill rocks with local jazz or bluegrass bands and the occasional sort-of-big-name performer. The stage is surrounded by signs from now-defunct Whitefish enterprises. There are also gaming machines, shuffleboard, pool, and ping-pong. Take refuge on the outdoor patio to enjoy a brew, a pile of nachos, live music, and the cool summer evening.

Green Bench Brewing Company

The name of this bar is a nod to the green benches that once lined Central Avenue and were often occupied by retirees. But the Sunshine City has shaken its rap as a sleepy retirement town and has become a craft beer town, as evidenced by breweries like this one. Barkeeps here serve brews made on-site as well as those from a few guest kegs. The interior has a lodgelike feel (as much as a bar can in Florida), but the real atmosphere is outside, where Adirondack chairs and badminton sets are scattered across the lawn. It's also just a couple of blocks from Tropicana Field, so the place can get packed before and after the Rays play.

The Green Dragon Tavern

Government Center

Less rowdy than its Faneuil Hall neighbors, this now-Irish bar claims to have housed the "Headquarters of the Revolution" and was the inn where silversmith Paul Revere overheard plans for a British assault on Lexington and Concord, prompting his famous ride. While yesteryear found John Hancock (whose brother lived next door) strolling past its doors, today The Green Dragon is known for a great Guinness pour and Irish music—soloists play in the evenings from 5 to 9 Wednesday through Friday, and bands bring it on most weekend nights beginning at 9. There's comedy night every Monday and a selection of Top 40 cover bands playing Tuesday through Sunday. College kids and young professionals tend to crowd the bar in the evenings.

The Green Lady

Lakeview

This welcoming, female-owned tavern has been serving the city's craft beer scene since opening in 2011. The ever-rotating draft list focuses on local breweries from around Chicago like Spiteful Brewing and Half Acre, while also exposing patrons to more exotic beverages like the puckeringly sour Duchesse de Bourgogne from Belgium. A small array of wines and spirits supplement the drinks list, and patrons regularly pack the place for trivia nights and Euchre tournaments.

Green Zone

Adams Morgan

Named after Baghdad's Green Zone, the theme of the bar is bringing people together, and Middle Eastern and other international DJs often perform there on weekends. Popular ever since it opened, it's now a fixture on the "best cocktails" lists compiled by D.C. publications and blogs. The creative drinks combine Middle Eastern spices such as saffron and za'atar with Western spirits like rum and whiskey. Pair your beverage with Lebanese olives, creamy hummus, and savory falafel.

Grendel's Den

Harvard Square

This quintessential grad-student hangout is cavelike, low-lit, and brick-walled. During early evenings, tasty entrées like buffalo chicken dip, burritos, brisket nachos, and burgers are half price with a $4-per-person drink (inside only; not on outdoor patio). Named after Grendel, the antagonist in the Old English poem Beowulf, there's nothing but neighborhood love here as you raise a pint in this half-century-old hangout.

The Griffin

Downtown

As good as Vegas Bohemia gets, this Downtown bar, close to the Beauty Bar and the Downtown Cocktail Room, is an instant winner. Some wags have likened it to a Peppermill for the younger, looser set, but this description fails to account for the beauty of its hipster crowd as well as its decor, from the kitschy neon sign outside to the fire grills, the barrel-vaulted brick ceiling, the semicircular banquettes, and the griffin insignias on the bathroom walls. The best feature, though, is the back room, which resembles a study owned by King Henry VIII—had he lived in the 1950s.

The Griffon

Dollar bills cover just about every square inch of the Griffon, helping the bar achieve nearly legendary status around the city. Its wood interior is dark, dusty, and well worn yet charming. A rotating selection of draft beers comes from local breweries like Westbrook, Coast, and Holy City. It's a popular lunchtime and happy-hour watering hole and hosts live music on weekend nights.

You can play pool in the main room or bowl at the eight lanes in the side room ($7 per game or $40–$45 per hour; $3 shoe rental; bowling is cash only).
