The Loading Dock

$ | Wedgewood-Houston

Once you turn onto Lindell Avenue, look for picnic tables and a brightly colored mural on the white Wedge Building and you'll find this local gem whose Grumpy Hour (8 to 10 am) gets you a free coffee with any breakfast order. The salads are huge, the sandwiches are delicious, and the staff are super nice. If all the tables are taken inside, head down a short flight of stairs for more tables and couches.

Lofty Pursuits

$

Although this old-school ice-cream parlor and candy shop serves salads, sandwiches, and other savory dishes, it's best known for its extensive menu of sodas, frappes, and egg creams and its generous brunches featuring classic waffles and omelets, as well as a homemade hash that is deliciously different. The ice-cream choices are delectable, and it's hard to take your eyes off the candy makers as they hand-craft the confections. Lofty also sells jigsaw puzzles, toys, and board games, which customers have been known to play while dining.

Mangia Mangia

$$

This longtime favorite serves large portions of homemade pastas that can be matched with any of the homemade sauces. Tables are arranged in a brick garden hung with twinkling lights and in a cozy, casual dining room in an old house. Everything out of the open kitchen is outstanding, including the bollito misto di mare (fresh seafood sautéed with garlic, shallots, white wine, and pasta) or the memorable spaghettini "schmappellini," homemade pasta with asparagus, tomatoes, pine nuts, and Parmesan. The wine list—with more than 350 offerings—includes old and rare vintages, and also has a good by-the-glass selection.

Netflix Bites

$$$ | South Strip

Las Vegas has had restaurants themed for Motown, ESPN, Star Trek, magic, Hello Kitty, and more over the years, so this zeitgeist-grabbing spot feels inevitable. The energy of the casino floor carries into the neon-bedecked restaurant, where you'll find food and drink inspired by Netflix favorites, such as "Eggs Benedict Bridgerton" (with smoked salmon) "Stranger Wings" (with Buffalo, lemon pepper, or bbq sauce) "Orange is the New Mac" (mac and cheese with hot Cheetos), or drinks like the "Dalgona Rum Buzz" or "The House of Usher." Or indulge in the full Bridgerton Regency Tea, with finger sandwiches, scones, and everything else Lady Whistledown would expect. This is a pop-up that is expected to last into early 2026, but maybe it'll get a second season. It closes from 2 to 5 daily.

Pharm Table

$$$ | King William Historic District

On a mission to reinvent health food into something more flavorful and inspiring since 2015, Pharm Table's chef-owner Elizabeth Johnson takes a plant-forward approach to anti-inflammatory cuisine. The restaurant uses locally sourced produce with no dairy, refined sugar, or processed foods anywhere on the menu. To that end, they also  incorporate smaller portions of clean animal proteins with an emphasis on nutrient-dense foods.

The Plot

$

Zero waste with root-to-stem consumption has this plant-based restaurant turning beets into catchup, cashews into cheese, and carrot tops into pesto. Sustainability rules the menu created with fresh produce from local farms and the regenerative gardens out back. Tastebuds are in for a pleasant surprise with the Kombu cauliflower, the Cubano (mojo marinated shredded jackfruit), and the kimchi bowl with red-lentil "spam." Weekend brunch rolls out “chicken” and oat-milk waffles along with other classics with a healthy spin like “sausage” and biscuits. If you can’t finish your meal, never fear. Leftovers are composted and nothing goes to waste, including veggie stock that makes its way into risotto and banana peels turned into tacos.

Smart sophisticated decor, attentive and skilled service, and an exceptional menu that highlights Hawaiian seafood make Red Salt a great choice for leisurely fine dining. Settle into the couch or sit at a table for breakfast and try the Eggs Bigelow (two eggs in a hole, bacon, cheddar, and locally baked sourdough) or grab a sandwich, wrap, or sub for lunch. Don't miss the selection of "penny candy" and quirky, nostalgic toys and joke items.

Spinnakers

$$

Plenty of seafood shacks dot U.S. 1, but this roadside joint is really worth the stop, even if it’s just to grab some takeout and escape the steady flow of summer traffic. Simple but pleasing contemporary design makes for a cheerful space to enjoy loaded lobster rolls, burgers, sandwiches, and a decidedly unholy lobster poutine consisting of hand-cut fries covered in a delicious mess of local cheese curds topped with lobster gravy. The gluten-free fried seafood options are unique, and prepared using dedicated tables, bowls, utensils, baskets and fryers.
