Californios

$$$$ | SoMa Fodor's Choice

This Californian-Mexican tasting-menu concept by chef Val M. Cantú continues to be one of the hottest tickets in the entire Bay Area. Cantú and his team's creations, along with an acclaimed wine program that often pours wines from Mexico's growing wine industry, remain as special as ever, crafting what is possibly the country's leading Mexican-influenced fine-dining experience. As wonderful as what's on the table is, the posh black-walled setting with contemporary art and dramatic chandeliers is just as notable. It's also possible to make a reservation for seating at the intimate bar (with the same menu as the dining room), where guests can have a front-row seat for watching the terrific tequila and mezcal cocktails being made.

Condesa

$$ | Center City West Fodor's Choice

In a neighborhood full of beautifully designed restaurants with exciting food to boot, it's hard to pick favorites, but Condesa certainly holds its own. Inspired by the flavors and style of Mexico City, the restaurant expands over an outdoor space, indoor dining room, lounge, and a bar, seating 140 people. The centerpiece of the food menu are the Mexican heirloom corn tortillas, which are made in-house on a daily basis, and come as a base for the tacos or as a side for the more substantial entrées. Located within the Motto Hotel by Hilton, Condesa is one of three Mexican restaurants within the space—also there is El Cafe, a ground-floor coffee and pastry shop, and El Techo, a rooftop tequila and mezcal bar with a focus on Mexican street food.

Corima

$$$ | Chinatown Fodor's Choice

Chef Fidel Caballero mines his upbringing on the U.S.--Mexican border, as well as his time cooking in award-winning restaurants in Spain's Basque Country and in Shanghai by producing dishes that marry all these cultures into one unique and delicious meal. The 54-seat eatery is split in two: more casual à la carte options up front and a tasting menu (with a counter overlooking the kitchen) in the back. Expect wow-inducing dishes with multilayered flavor strata, inventive cocktails, and a nicely curated wine list with bottles from Spain and Mexico.

You'll also find well-prepared versions of Mexican and Tex-Mex classics, from nachos to tortilla soup to fajitas. Cocktails here are equally impressive and the bar offers an extensive selection of mezcals, tequilas, and sotols.

Tac/Quila

$$ Fodor's Choice

Tac/Quila is what happens when two lawyers dare to dream out loud and switch gears mid-career—judging from the crowds at this always humming joint, they made the right decision. The setting features flower-laden "living" walls and a blend of mid-century modern and classic-Mexican design elements, but the menu is all Mexican, with Jalisco-style appetizers, tacos, ceviches, and meat dishes, as well as a surprising number vegetarian and vegan copycats. And, like any Mexican restaurant worth its margarita salt, this one has a bar that's well stocked with a variety of tequilas and mezcals. For similar bites and booze in a quieter, less-crowded space, head over to sister eatery Clandestino.

Tacos Oscar

$ | Temescal Fodor's Choice

Arguably the most talked-about tacos in the entire Bay Area are at this colorful, cheery spot operating from a shipping container in an alley in between Uptown, Temescal, and Piedmont Avenue. Fillings are always packed with flavor, complemented by dialed-in salsas like a peanut–arbol chile one with carefully charred broccoli. There are always multiple tempting vegan tacos offered, which is extremely rare to find. As popular as the tacos are, the creative tostadas (perhaps topped with Dungeness crab or cactus) have an equally devoted following.

Taqueria Chingon

$ Fodor's Choice

This perennially packed counter-service taqueria seamlessly merges an easy-going atmosphere with cheffy bonafides: co-owner Oliver Poilevey also helms French favorites Le Bouchon and Obelix. The chef puts his pedigree to work with super-flavorful tacos—like duck carnitas with date puree or blood sausage with whipped creme fresh—that go far beyond the usual.

Tumerico

$$ | University Fodor's Choice

This "no frills" vegan and vegetarian restaurant serves bountiful portions of exceptional, bold-flavored Mexican food in a funky old territorial house on the corner of 4th Avenue and 4th Street. Nonvegans will be amazed that the jackfruit-filled tacos and tamales are not meat; even the accompanying rice, beans, and salad are a cut above. For the best experience, sit and people-watch on the ample front porch---where your meal is prepared in a food-truck-like outdoor grill---rather than inside. Tumerico's original location, with an indoor kitchen and liquor license, is at 2526 E. 6th St. (Central).

Rosa Mexicano
