Tune Inn

$ | Capitol Hill

Part bar, part diner, part happy-hour haunt for Hill staffers, this Capitol Hill tradition is one of the neighborhood's last great dives. Opened in 1947, and still run by the same family, the space was upgraded after a fire in 2011 but retains its lodge-like decor, including a healthy display of taxidermied animals staring down from the walls. Pony up to the bar, which boasts the second-oldest liquor license in D.C., beside a loyal cast of regulars, to catch a Commanders game over a beer and a plate of greasy-spoon favorites like chicken fingers and jalapeño poppers. Or amble to the booths in the back for its most famous burger—beer-battered and deep-fried.

Tune-Up Cafe

$ | Railyard District

This funky spot has colorful walls and wood details, booths, a few individual tables, and a community table. The shaded patio out front is a great summertime spot to enjoy the toothsome Southwest-inspired cooking, from breakfast through dinner. Start the day with savory breakfast rellenos, fluffy buttermilk pancakes, or the smoked-trout hash. The extensive lunch and dinner menus include juicy burgers (both meat and veggie) and some of the best vegetarian enchiladas around. Don't miss the Salvadoran pupusas. Homemade baked goods include a variety of pies and cakes. The staff is friendly and efficient and the care taken by owner/chef Jesus Rivera is evident.

Turkey and the Wolf

$ | Garden District

A young, energetic team adds gourmet touches (all meat is cured in-house) to over-the-top comfort foods at Turkey and the Wolf: towering fried bologna sandwiches, deviled eggs with crispy chicken skins, and cheesy melts with peppered dressing. The vibe is pleasantly divey, a cross between grandma's kitchen and a hipster's haven. The small sandwich shop surprised gourmands by becoming Bon Appetit's 2017 Best New Restaurant of the Year. As a result, there are still lines out the door on most days, especially weekends, and the kitchen often sells out before closing at 5 pm.

Tutto Pasta Trattoria

$$

Occupying a corner along State Street in downtown Madison, this place specializes in fresh pasta, house-made breads, and indulgent desserts. The most romantic seats in the three-story eatery are on the lower level among stone walls and mood lighting. Pasta dishes are grouped under either red or white sauce on the menu, while heartier entrées such as pollo piccata (chicken breast sauteed in lemon-caper cream sauce) showcase true Italian cuisine. Paninis and pizzas represent lighter fare, with the build-your-own pizza a solution for fussy eaters. Don't leave without ordering a cappuccino, paired with cannoli or tiramisu.

Later, bigger headliners take the stage as patrons enjoy elevated cocktails and one of the best wine lists in the city. Twin Anchors Restaurant & Tavern

$$ | Lincoln Park

For a taste of classic Chicago, stop into Twin Anchors, which has been dishing out baby-back ribs since 1932—the nautically themed brick tavern was a favorite of Frank Sinatra, who still croons regularly over the speakers. You’re partly visiting for the scene, as local and touring celebs often visit, but lovers of barrooms with personality don't mind the typically long waits during prime time. Vegetarians will find the pickings slim (though the freshly fried kettle chips with buttermilk dip may lessen the sting somewhat).
