Perla's

$$$ | South Congress District

Seafood, service, and panache are pretty as a pearl at this homage to New England yacht clubs. One of Austin’s original high-end patio destinations still delivers the city’s best fish, punched up with Texas style and zing. Case in point, the Crab Louie served as luscious lumps of crabmeat piled upon crunchy fried green tomatoes and served with lemony aioli. Market fish selections are ordered to preference and served with spicy garlic-herb salsa verde, house tartar, or red chimichurri sauce. Sit at the cold bar and watch the expert oyster shuckers at work. At night and weekend brunch hours, the patio is ideal for South Congress people-watching with a tropical cocktail in hand.

Perry Street Brasserie

$$$

Chef-owner Steve Dowe explains that the name of his restaurant is a play on words and relates to the monumental brasses that hang majestically on the walls of this romantic spot about a block from the Galena River. Making brass rubbings—and teaching others the craft—has been a longtime hobby of the native English man and his wife Renee. Another side love? Making his own organic spice mixes. Dowe has used the blends in his recipes for nearly 45 years and is now bottling six varieties under the name AcroAma Inc. But you'll be happy you left the cooking to chef Dowe when you taste his spot-on petite beef tenderloin, paired with quail; or grilled lamb with homemade lamb sausage; or his sautéed Gulf shrimp with olives in a Provencale sauce. Top it all off with the signature chocolate cup dessert: a bowl of solid Swiss chocolate filled with creamy dark and milk chocolate ganaches.

Peter Luger Steak House

$$$$ | Center Strip

The venerable New York steakhouse, which dates to 1887, launched its first American location outside of New York with this spot with lots of windows and a dramatic arched ceiling. The legendarily gruff waiters are back in the Big Apple, but the on-site dry-aged prime steaks are here—for two, three, or four people. Double-thick lamb chops are another option, and whole sole is boned tableside. For lunch, indulge in a half-pound-plus Luger Burger, or take a lighter approach with sliced tomatoes and onions with Luger’s Own Sauce, both also available as part of the three-course prix-fixe Luger Power Lunch, available Wednesday through Friday and Sunday.

Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop

Old-fashioned doughnuts, bagels, and egg sandwiches are made fresh daily. You'll find all the classics, from glazed and cake doughnuts to coconut cream and red velvet. You can order your doughnuts to go, or grab a seat for counter service. Everything is inexpensive and delicious.

Peter Pause

$

Shirt-and-tie wearers mix with jeans-and-sneakers types at this tiny Italian diner across the street from Union College. The best seats are at the counter, where you can watch the soup simmer and smell the tomato sauce. Melt-in-your-mouth eggplant parmigiana sandwiches are the specialty. Daily pasta dishes might include spaghetti, ravioli, or linguine with red or white clam sauce. On a cold day, warm up with a bowl of stracciatelli (a soup made with eggs, semolina, and cheese).

Phat Bites

$ | Donelson

Maybe it’s the graffitied walls, maybe it’s the local bee-pollen honey, but this crunchy sandwich shop inside a converted garage is undeniably cool. Come any time, morning or night, and you’ll find a goat cheese–smothered waffle, a hummus-stuffed veggie wrap, or a late-night cocktail that will suit your needs.

Phayul

$ | Jackson Heights

Step through a doorway beneath a Himalayan eyebrow-threading sign, head up a twisting stairway, and pass through a beaded curtain to reach this cash-only restaurant serving cuisine that is a delicious culinary anomaly: namely, Tibetan Sichuan. The traditional Tibetan momos are worth trying, as is the beef-studded yak-cheese soup (if you're adventurous), but it's the fusion of the two cultures that produces exciting dishes like spicy blood sausage or tofu in a fiery chili sauce. If the original upstairs restaurant is full, head directly across the street to the newer, expanded digs.

Philomena's Pizza

$$ | Sunnyside

One of an increasing number of artisanal pizza shops, Philomena's serves both squares and slices, Neapolitan and New York style. The squares are chewy and bouncy while the crust on those slices is crisp and nearly caramelized thanks to the 72-hour fermentation process behind the dough. You can't go wrong with a classic slice, but Philomena's does funky well; go for a broccoli rabe and chickpea puree slice, a fiori di zucca, or a "spicy Mikey," made with hot honey, soppressata, and mozzarella.
