Pancho and Lefty's Cantina & Restaurante

$

Across the street from the Kona Inn Shopping Village, in Kailua Village, this upstairs cantina is a nice perch for enjoying nachos and margaritas (try the hibiscus margarita) on a lazy afternoon, or for watching the passersby on Alii Drive. Try the molcajete—a type of bowl—loaded with marinated chicken, steak, and shrimp and a sauce crafted of chiles and topped with jack cheese. Or just order the chips, salsa, and ceviche, which might hit the spot at the end of a long day of sightseeing. At 5 pm, the banyan tree nearby fills with hundreds of chirping mynah birds, a veritable happy hour in bird land.

Paneantico

This seemingly always busy corner bakery and café has been serving Bay Ridgers since 2000, with menu offerings that include hearty salads, sandwiches, fresh breads, and prepared foods to go. Its long glass cases are filled with tempting traditional Italian and American desserts; the cannoli are delicious. The hero with hot soppressata, Bel Paese cheese, and green olive tapenade is a lunch favorite, as is the one with broccoli rabe, mozzarella, and fried eggplant. Grab an espresso or cappuccino from the coffee bar in the back and linger outside at a table.

Popular choices here include buckwheat pancakes, huevos consuelo (a corn tortilla topped with two eggs, spicy chile, and cheese, with the Pantry's famous home fries), green-chile stew, tortilla burgers, and chicken-fried steak. If you decide to hit the Pantry on a weekend, prepare to wait as the line is frequently out the door. The Pantry is so popular that it now has two additional locations: the Pantry Dos, located farther south of town near Santa Fe Community College, and the Pantry Rio, which sits near the Santa Fe River on Galisteo Street in downtown.

Paolucci Restaurant, Deli & Lounge

$

With a rich history that dates back to a deli in a small town north of Naples, Italy, Paoluccis has stayed in the family since it opened 30 years ago. Recipes crafted by the Paolucci–Begley families are served here, starting with garlic- and basil-infused dipping oil with flatbread and moving on up to the locally famous get-a-second-plate-free specialty pasta. Hearty breakfasts include a stack of chocolate-chip pancakes or biscuits and gravy. The upstairs lounge is open late and puts an Italian twist on bar food with toasted ravioli, while still honoring classics like spicy hot wings and roast beef sandwiches.

Paper Moon Diner

$ | Charles Village

The ceilings and walls of this funky, colorful diner are plastered with toys and other interesting objects. People come at all hours (it's open 7 am–midnight every day except Tuesday, and until 2 am on the weekend) for the overstuffed omelets, big stacks of pancakes, burgers, nachos, sandwiches and... bacon milkshakes (a must-try). Stop by at midnight on a Friday or Saturday night to nosh on sweet potato fries with hipsters and students from nearby Johns Hopkins University. The servers have a diner attitude—they don't always seem too interested in serving, and the food might take a while—but the place is always lively and entertaining.

Let the gargantuan antique front doors brought in from San Juan be your first clue to what Papi is all about: an ongoing celebration of Puerto Rican food and culture. The vibe is upbeat and friendly, the music fun and joyful, and the food and cocktail program complex and supremely excellent. One menu staple, the pernil (traditional marinated and slow-roasted pork shoulder) is especially deep-flavored and worth diving into.

Pappas Bros. Steakhouse

Loyal Pappas fans love the contemporary atmosphere here and the cut and flavor of the dry-aged beef. The dining room is less masculine and better lit than typical steak houses but still feels a bit formal and special. The filet mignon, offered in three weights, is the most popular cut of beef, and au gratin potatoes and creamed spinach are popular side dishes. The wine selection is legendary, as are the cigars offered—60 sizes and brands.

Pappas Bros. Steakhouse

$$$$ | Uptown

The operative word at this popular steakhouse is "prime": prime beef, a prime setting, and a clientele primed for coddling, conversation, and cholesterol. The Steakhouse, poshest of the Pappas restaurant dynasty, gains a clubby look from dark wood, cushy booths, and phones at the tables. Thumbs-up to a beefsteak-tomato-and-Roquefort salad (big enough to share) and to the fork-tender New York strip steak with peppercorn sauce. Creamy mashed potatoes and giant fried onion rings provide delicious accompaniments to fillets. Expect a wait, even with reservations.
