Named for a bygone tobacco inspector, John J. Jeffries is the dining anchor of the hip Lancaster Arts Hotel, which occupies a former tobacco factory (retaining its exposed brick and wood beams) in downtown Lancaster. Seasonal, local, and organic are the buzz words on a farm-to-table menu that often features dishes likegrass-fed, dry-aged steak tartare (sourced from a farm in rural Pennsylvania) and freshly-plucked greens dotted with county-crafted cheese.

The owners of city favorite, Ma(i)son, debuted LUCA in a sun-washed barn of a space furnished with roll-up garage doors, taxidermy, and arbor-covered patio. The menu is built around a wood-burning oven that turns out impeccable Neapolitan pizzas and shareable proteins like chicken and swordfish. House-made burrata, wood-grilled vegetable antipasti, etheral pastas, and Italian cocktails round out an experience that already has a local cult following.

A bit o' the Emerald Isle in downtown Lancaster, this traditional Irish pub occupies a Victorian-era building that formerly housed the Sayers, Scheid & Sweeton men's clothing store. The native Irish owners have decorated the pub with artifacts from Ireland, and the words "Cead mile Failte" ("A Hundred Thousand Welcomes") are inscribed in the stone inlaid doorway. The menu includes fish-and-chips, Irish stew, and plenty of Guinness and Irish whiskeys. Like most Irish pub-restaurants, Annie's feels more bar than restaurant weekend nights.

The food is artistically presented in a stylish Art Deco setting; tables are draped with crisp white linens and topped with a single lily. Chef and owner Steve Brown welcomes guests with regional American fare that's known for its "flair," such as raspberry chicken with Chambord sauce, seafood deviled eggs, and grilled New Orleans-style meat loaf with Cajungravy. You can also dine on lighter fare, such as seasonal salads featuring locally-grown produce and regional cheeses. The gorgeous view overlooking town is another plus.

The name of this cool downtown spot references two of its proprietors: one is a transplanted Australian; the other's last name is Fox. The warm setting is contemporary but playful with a mix of wire chandeliers, exposed brick, dark woods, and antique mantles, along with ornate arrangements of gold-framed mirrors, Victorian prints, and sumptuous, tufted upholstery. The menu is similarly balanced with a mix of Australian dishes like Australian tomato pie, the Aussie burger, and Lamington whoopie pies (chocolate whoopie pie with red raspberry and coconut cream filling) and more locally inspired (and sourced) fare like grilled half chicken with cornbread waffles, a Beet-L-T wrap, and birch beer-glazed ribs. Wash down with carefully crafted cocktails and (strong) Australian coffees.
