Bella Vista Motel

$ | 180 6th St., Copper Harbor, MI, 49918, USA

Next to the ferry dock for Isle Royale National Park, this motel also has its own dock on the harbor and, not surprisingly, some rooms have harbor and Lake Superior views—Bella Vista is Spanish for "beautiful sight." Accommodations are split between the two-story Isle Royale House, a ranch-style motel (which has the best lake views), and eight cottages with full kitchens. These are set in nicely landscaped grounds with trees and neat lawns. Complimentary coffee is served in the lobby each morning starting at 6:30. All rooms offer cable television and free Wi-Fi.

Pros

  • Free use of canoes
  • Friendly staff have good local knowledge
  • Great bakery nearby

Cons

  • Not enough lawn chairs for every motel guest
  • Not enough picnic tables for every cottage

Dapple-Gray Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 13640 State Hwy. 26, Copper Harbor, MI, 49950, USA

On 27 acres of wooded grounds overlooking Lake Superior, with 600 feet of rocky lakeshore, this place is part antiques shop, part rustic lodge. Inside and out, it is a true log-cabin design, with an extensive balcony for drinking in those fabulous views while sipping a glass of wine. Co-owner Ruth van Goor is also an antiques appraiser and her eye for stunning historical furnishings and art is evident in all four guest suites. Each carries a different theme, such as Americana or the seashore. The ground floor is occupied by the antiques shop, which specializes in the Victorian era, particularly ceramics and glass. Breakfast is served at 9 each morning.

Pros

  • Beautiful grounds and gardens
  • Owners are very friendly

Cons

  • Short drive west of Copper Harbor
  • May be too overstuffed with antiques for some tastes
