Little America Hotel & Resort

$$ | 2800 W. Lincolnway, Cheyenne, WY, 82009, USA Fodor's Choice
The guest rooms at this sprawling, 80-acre property are large and full of old-school elegance, with giant windows, carpet in rich colors, and plenty of space to sit; it doesn't feel hip and modern, but that's the fun of it and part of what keeps this a local icon. Most guest rooms are spread among several buildings clustered around the outdoor swimming pool, and some are attached to the common public areas via a glassed-in breezeway. Though close to Cheyenne, Little America offers so many amenities that you don't have to go into town if you don't want to, and both its restaurants serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Luxuriously decorated Hathaway's ($$$) has an upscale feel and a menu full of steaks, burgers, and pasta. For a more casual choice, grab a coffee and a bite at Carol's Cafe ($). There's also a nine-hole golf course, gift shop, and 30,000-square-foot conference center on-site.

Pros

  • Full of historic elegance
  • Many amenities, including restaurants and gift shop
  • Largest convention center in Wyoming

Cons

  • Golf course only has nine holes
  • Many rooms not connected to main complex
  • Outdoor pool only open seasonally

The Lodge at Spruce Peak

$$ | 7412 Mountain Rd., Stowe, VT, 05672, USA Fodor's Choice

At the base of Mount Mansfield and Spruce Peak, this lodge would be king of the hill for its location alone, but a stay here also affords many perks including dining outposts like Tipsy Trout and Alpine Hall and rustic-meets-contemporary accommodations that run the gamut from studios and four-bedroom penthouse units to modern slopeside condos. Be sure to check out the WhistlePig Pavilion for a one-of-a-kind Vermont Experience, with whiskey flights and slow-smoked meats. A spa and salon, a massive fitness room, two 18-hole golf courses, a game room, and a huge heated outdoor pool also number among the amenities; "wellness lodges" include oversize hot tubs and saunas.

Pros

  • Mountain views and proximity to slopes
  • Lots of children's activities

The Lodge at the Presidio

$$ | 105 Montgomery St., San Francisco, CA, 94129, USA Fodor's Choice

The three-story Lodge occupies former Army barracks, built in the 1890s, and is at the Main Post green's northwestern edge, allowing some rooms to have Golden Gate Bridge views; all rooms are far more upscale and chic than military accommodations, with large flat-screen TVs, well-appointed bathrooms, workstations, and dreamy, custom-made pillow-top mattresses. The best vantage point for the Golden Gate Bridge is from the fire pit just outside the lobby, where guests can warm up with coffee and a complimentary breakfast or enjoy an aperitif from the late-afternoon wine and snacks reception. Rooms, hallways, and the lobby feature a transitional combination of century-old paintings and photographs of the early Presidio military days along with contemporary military- and San Francisco–themed artwork.

The Madrones Guest Quarters

$$ | 9000 Hwy. 128, CA, 95466, USA Fodor's Choice

The centerpiece of a 2-acre spread that includes tasting rooms, a gift shop, an apothecary-style cannabis dispensary, and a restaurant, this property has nine eclectically decorated accommodations that range from apartment-like studios to duplex cottages, some with patios or balconies facing landscaped gardens. The peaceful setting and on-site diversions encourage lingering, but should you desire to venture forth, a half dozen wineries (among them Goldeneye next door) are within a mile, and Hendy Woods State Park and its redwoods are a little farther along. Luxurious furnishings, ample bathrooms, and layouts that include sitting areas make for a smooth transition to country living, as do perks like flat-screen TVs, Nespresso coffeemakers, microwaves, and refrigerators stocked with breakfast items. Though thoughtful, the hospitality here is laissez-faire, so if you need pampering or the full bed-and-breakfast experience, this place might not work for you.

  • Location near wineries and Hendy Woods State Park
  • On-site Wickson Restaurant
  • Nearby sister property The Brambles set among redwoods for a more casual experience

Cons

  • Weekend minimum-stay requirement
  • Pricey on summer weekends

Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel and Cabins

$$ | 2 Mammoth Hotel Ave., Yellowstone National Park, WY, 82190, USA Fodor's Choice

The rooms at this 1936 lodge are smaller and simpler than those at the park's other historic hotels, but this one is less expensive; the surrounding cabins look like tiny, genteel summer homes. The rooms can get hot in summer months, but you can open the windows to catch a breeze. Some of the rooms do not have private bathrooms; shared facilities are down the hall. Set amid lush lawns, the cabins are among the nicest inside the park, and some have hot tubs, although others are without private baths. With a spacious art deco lobby, this is one of the few lodging facilities open in winter.

Pros

  • Good rates for a historic property
  • Wake up to an elk bugling outside your window
  • Cabins are among the park's nicest

Cons

  • Least expensive rooms lack bathrooms

Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas

$$ | 3950 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89119, USA Fodor's Choice

Mandalay Bay remains as exotic as ever, decked out like a South Seas beach resort, complete with cavernous rooms and one of the best pool areas on the Strip. Bathrooms have stone floors and counters, as well as deep soaking tubs with separate showers. This resort is actually three hotels in one—the namesake Mandalay Bay, W Las Vegas, and the Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas. Each brand is distinct, and each has a separate entrance. All guests receive full access to the Beach, which boasts a wave pool, lazy river, three swimming pools, and 2,700 tons of real sand; and the Moorea Beach Club, which offers topless sunbathing during the summer (and is family-friendly in the winter). Two on-site spas—Mandalay Bay Spa and Salon (at Mandalay Bay) and Bathhouse Spa (at W)—offer a variety of relaxation chambers and dozens of signature treatments and are similarly open to all guests. Perhaps the only downside to staying at Mandalay Bay is the spacious layout of the property itself; without a map, it could take you five or six tries to get your bearings when you come and go.

Pros

  • Large rooms
  • Ample options for everything
  • The Beach

Cons

  • Concerts can be loud
  • So large it's easy to get lost
  • Nothing comes cheap here, including the resort fee

McMenamins Kennedy School

$$ | 5736 N.E. 33rd Ave., OR, 97211, USA Fodor's Choice

In a renovated elementary school near Northeast Portland's trendy Alberta District, Oregon's famously creative McMenamin brothers hoteliers created a quirky and fantastical multiuse facility with guest rooms that feature original schoolhouse touches like chalkboards and cloakrooms and literature-inspired themes, a movie theater, a restaurant, a warm outdoor soaking pool, a brewery, and several small bars. This may be one of the most unusual (and fun) hotels you'll ever encounter—the casual Courtyard restaurant, "a school cafeteria like no other," has mahogany booths, an outdoor space for warmer days, decent pub food, and ales brewed in-house, and you can enjoy cocktails and classical music in Honors Bar, or play billiards and shuffleboard in the Boiler Room Bar—depending on your mood. Guest rooms occupy former classrooms, and each has tall windows and a hand-painted mural depicting a nursery rhyme or teacher.

Pros

  • Funky and authentic Portland experience

  • Free parking

Cons

The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa

$$ | 3649 Mission Inn Ave., Riverside, CA, 92501, USA Fodor's Choice

A National Historic Landmark, this property grew from a modest adobe lodge in 1876 to the current grand Spanish Revival–style inn—one where each guest room has plush amenities, unique design touches, and priceless antiques. From the late 1800s to 1935, owner Frank Miller enlarged and embellished the property with decorative items such as Tiffany glass, an antique Asian bell collection, and fine paintings. In 1992, after a long period of decline, the inn was purchased and renovated by Duane Roberts, who preserved its grand archways, flying buttresses, secluded gardens, and inspirational chapels. Elite guests over the years have included 10 U.S. presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, John F. Kennedy, and Ronald Reagan among them. The walls of the bar feature photos of Barbra Streisand, Betty White, and members of multiple generations of the Bush family. The popular Mission Inn Restaurant and Duane's are where locals go for special occasions. Hand-painted frescoes, Venetian chandeliers, and barrel-vaulted ceilings are regal features of the Tuscan-style Kelly's Spa, which has 12 treatment rooms and two private villas with outdoor teak rain showers, marble-encased aromatherapy baths, and flat-screen TVs. The former Morrison home, on the National Register of Historic Places, became noted in 1923 when the Women's Army and Navy League bought and converted it into inexpensive lodgings for visiting enlisted men. First Lady Grace Coolidge attended the opening, and other First Ladies and dignitaries have visited over the years. American cuisine with regional accents is served in the relaxed restaurant, with its outstanding wine list and patio.

Pros

  • Charming alternative to cookie-cutter hotels
  • Historic feel throughout
  • Near convention center

Cons

  • Some street noise
  • Room size and style vary considerably
  • Some bathrooms are pretty small

Naomi's Inn

$$ | 20 Springfield St., Springfield, MA, 01107, USA Fodor's Choice

This elegantly restored house in a residential neighborhood is long on charm, due in no small part to the comfortable and character-filled suites, which are individually decorated—the Louis XIV suite has 19th-century armoires and a down-filled sofa, while the Global Fusion suite has a four-poster bed and a loveseat. The bright and airy kitchen is a pleasant place to gather, and a group of area restaurants will deliver food, which the friendly innkeeper is happy to serve on china plates, if she's not making your breakfast herself.

Pros

  • Bluetooth, bidets, and big-screen TVs with Netflix in rooms
  • Luxe linens and other fabrics
  • Warm and knowledgeable hosts

Cons

  • Near a hospital, so you may hear sirens
  • Smallish kitchen
  • No pool
