Disney's Port Orleans Resort–French Quarter

$$$ | 2201 Orleans Dr., Walt Disney World, FL, 32830, USA

Cobblestone streets, gas lamps, wrought-iron balconies, and fragrant magnolia blossoms create a Disneyfied (i.e., clean) version of the French Quarter at this property. Kids can spend hours in the elaborate pool area with its sea serpent waterslide; other activities include nightly campfires as well as pirate cruises and horse-drawn carriage rides (each for an added fee). Although a Mardi Gras–theme food court and a Southern-style jazz and cocktail bar can keep you occupied in the evening, do make use of the free shuttles and water taxis that travel to other Disney resorts and Disney Springs, located a few miles away. Genteel rooms have dark wood furnishings, free Wi-Fi, TVs, and coffeemakers.

Disney's Vero Beach Resort

$$$ | 9250 Island Grove Terr., Vero Beach, FL, 32963, USA

An oceanfront, family-oriented retreat tucked away in a residential stretch of Orchid Island, this Disney property has a retro Old Florida design with understated Mickey Mouse flair; plus, it's an easy drive to Walt Disney World in Orlando (just about 90 minutes). It's part of Disney's time-share program but also rents available rooms just like any other hotel.

The artfully conceived four-story main building, separate villas, and six beach cottages are reminiscent of 19th-century Florida, and you will find hidden treasurers related to sea turtles and Florida's rich history. All rooms come equipped with wet bars, mini-refrigerators, toasters, and microwaves; upgraded rooms offer full kitchens and laundry facilities. Although there are not too many dining options in the immediate area, the resort has some great eateries of its own: Shutters serves American food and has character breakfasts on Saturday morning, and Sonya's has wood-fired steaks and creative seafood. The highest rates here are in the summer, so spring, fall, and winter (except for two weeks in March) are perfect times to find deals.

  • Campfire circle
  • Several dining options on property

The Donatello

$$ | 501 Post St., San Francisco, CA, 94102, USA

A Tuscan-theme Wyndham owners' club and boutique hotel may hardly be a traditional San Francisco arrangement, but it's the setup for one of the prime Union Square places to stay for luxury without grande-dame prices or pomp and circumstance. Nonresident hotel guests enjoy all the perks of residents, including access to the lounge with its stunning views and to the excellent fitness center with plenty of workout equipment and saunas.

Pros

  • Giant-size rooms by SF standards
  • On-site Zingari Ristorante
  • Feels more like a home than a hotel

Cons

  • Located away from the main areas of Nob Hill and Union Square
  • Shared spaces with residents
  • Not particularly stylish
