Crystal Pier Hotel & Cottages

$$$ | 4500 Ocean Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92109, USA

Rustic little oases with a charm all their own, the beachy cottages may lack some of the amenities of comparably priced hotels, but you're paying for character and proximity to the ocean—these lodgings are literally on the pier. Crystal Pier, a Pacific Beach landmark, had its grand opening in 1927; 10 years later, the first of the blue-and-white cottages were built. The well-maintained units sleep two to six people; most have kitchens and private decks. Call 11 months in advance for summer reservations. There's a minimum-stay requirement of three nights from mid-June through September, two nights the rest of the year.

The D Las Vegas

$ | 301 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV, 89101, USA

The \"D\" may be for eccentric owner Derek Stevens—or perhaps \"Downtown\"—but the 34-story resort has established itself in recent years as the liveliest of the Downtown hotels. The casino floor even has an obtuse Detroit theme (another possible \"D\"), with Zingerman's coffee available at the coffee shop on the casino floor. Rooms here are small but modern and functional with bold colors. The modest pool pales in comparison to those at Strip resorts, but the on-site steak house, Andiamo, is a favorite of locals who have traveled downtown for years. Every summer, the hotel sponsors live music concerts on Fremont Street out front.

Pros

  • Live music out front
  • Casino has the only Sigma Derby machine left in town
  • Bitcoin ATMs

The Dagny

$$ | 89 Broad St., Boston, MA, 02110, USA

Fresh off a renovation in 2023, The Dagny caters to all types of travelers who will feel right at home grabbing a coffee to-go at Tradesman (the on-site cafe), working from the library, or de-stressing in the excellent, expansive fitness center on Technogym and Peloton machines. Guest rooms are immaculate and modern in calming gray and blue tones, featuring one or two beds, leather couches, and windows that actually open. Although this independent hotel brand is new to the Boston market, its location in the historic 1928 Batterymarch Building sure isn't; once the city's first skyscraper, the 14-story building no longer holds that title.

Pros

  • Concierges offer curated itineraries
  • Convenient location to the Waterfront, Financial District, and historic downtown
  • 2,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art fitness center

Cons

Dam Site Resort

$ | 77B Engle Star Rte., Elephant Butte, NM, 87935, USA

The lodgings at this resort are a fun step back in time. The lodge was built in 1911 for the dam's administration and engineering offices. The "cabins" are quaint, neo-pueblo, stucco structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1940s. The resort has been established as an official historic district, and the restoration of the buildings is top-notch. The lodge operates as a B&B and is furnished with many period antiques. The spacious covered porch overlooks the marina. The cabins are an experience in retro-chic, and all have views of the lake, and kitchenettes (you must furnish utensils, plates, etc.) The bar-restaurant ($), open weekends only, serves steaks, seafood, and sandwiches—and some excellent margaritas. On Saturday nights between about Easter and Labor Day, dance bands play blues or rock on the outdoor patio, which also has a bar. Booking is done through the Dam Site Marina office.
