TradeWinds Island Grand Resort

$$$ | 5500 Gulf Blvd., FL, 33706, USA

The only resort on the beach with its own fireworks display, the island-chic TradeWinds is also very pet-friendly—in addition to a play area and a room-service menu for dogs and cats, there's an entire building with rooms reserved for those traveling with pets. Those with children in tow will appreciate such younger-set activities as swimming lessons or digging for sharks' teeth with the notorious pirate, Captain Redbeard. Standard rooms have a wet bar with a microwave and mini-refrigerator; many rooms have beach views, though you may have to crane your neck (to avoid having to do so, opt for a Gulf-front suite with a balcony).

Pros

  • Great beachfront location
  • Lots of amenities for both children and pets
  • Access to facilities at RumFish sister property

Cons

  • Large, sprawling complex
  • Lots of weddings and conventions
  • Pesky resort fee

The Tremont House Hotel, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel

$$$$ | 2300 Ship's Mechanic Row, Galveston, TX, 77550, USA

Now part of Marriott's Tribute Portfolio, this upscale historic hotel is right downtown, the closest full-service lodging to the port. The hotel's four-story atrium lobby, with ironwork balconies and full-size palm trees, showcases an 1872 hand-carved rosewood bar in what was once a busy dry-goods warehouse. This actually is a historic place: Republic of Texas president Sam Houston presented his last speech at this hotel, both Confederate and Union soldiers bunked here, and Great Storm victims took refuge under this roof. Rooms have high ceilings and 11-foot windows. Rooms have been modernized but still have wood floors, and some have exposed brick. It's the closest full-service lodging to the port, great for meetings and events, and just a short walk from shopping on the Strand.

Pros

  • Pretty, modernized rooms with high ceilings and wood floors
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Fun rooftop bar

Cons

  • Valet but no on-site parking (which is expensive)
  • Very late check-in (4 pm)
  • Expensive on-site dining, though downtown restaurants are nearby

TWA Hotel

$$ | 1 Idlewild Dr., Queens, NY, 11430, USA

Built more for convenience than to elicit any sense of joy, airport hotels can be bland, cookie-cutter places, but not JFK's TWA Hotel: built in the airline's original, mid-century modern terminal, it's a celebration of the Jet Age—complete with primary colors and Jetson curves. Even between-flight nonguests will find plenty of draws, from the Sunken Lounge cocktail bar to the ice and roller skating rinks and the TWA Shop with its retro souvenirs. Mid-mod furniture and vintage posters decorate the soundproofed (of course) rooms, some of which have runway views, as does the rooftop infinity pool, heated to 95 degrees in winter. If you're just passing through and need a few hours' rest, inquire about Daytripper rates from 6 am to 8 pm.

Pros

  • A landmark, Eero Saarinen–designed building
  • Tons of amenities
  • On-site at JFK airport

$$ | 1015 Laurel Lick Rd., Pigeon Forge, TN, 37862, USA

A 10-minute drive down winding roads, this idyllic glamping spot is perfect for people who say things like, "I don't camp." Vdara Hotel & Spa at ARIA Las Vegas

$$ | 2600 W. Harmon Ave., Las Vegas, NV, 89158, USA

This low-key property is actually a hotel-condo, with beautiful suites that have efficiency kitchens, pull-out sofas, and lots of extra space. Because the suites are so big, they're perfect for large groups looking to shack up together during the visit to Vegas, and canine family members can be included. Each one has 50-inch digital flat-screen TVs, Bluetooth speaker connectivity, and a media hub with ports for digital cameras, DVD players, and gaming consoles. Bathrooms aren't as spacious as they could be, but the built-in seat in the walk-in shower is a refreshing addition, and Stay Well rooms and suites are available. Because Vdara has a more laid-back vibe than ARIA, the Vdara Pool & Cabanas feels like a private swimming hole. You can order everything from sunscreen to tapas and made-to-order cocktails. This personal attention continues in the two-floor Spa at Vdara, where therapeutic European temperature changes are a specialty. The Vice Versa Patio & Lounge is hip and swanky; some locals actually go out of their way to visit here.

Pros

  • Quiet retreat right in the middle of the action
  • Efficiency kitchens
  • Nice spa

Cons

  • Lacks the excitement of splashy resort properties

Viceroy Santa Monica

$$$ | 1819 Ocean Ave., Los Angeles, CA, 90401, USA

Tropical casual meets urbane at this stylized, airy seaside escape, where the cozy rooms, which all have French balconies, draw quite the upscale clientele. The mostly marble bathrooms have seated vanities and supremely refreshing aromatherapy products. The restaurant, Sugar Palm Ocean Avenue, makes the best of its indoor--outdoor ambience with a matching ocean-inspired menu and a huge wraparound bar. At the wood-paneled lounge during awards season, you'll likely catch a slew of celebs air kissing. Glamorous socializing also takes place in the pool and cabana area amid all-white armchairs and divans. Though the Viceroy arrived in town with the new century, the rooms are newly refreshed, with a neutral palette and mid-century-inspired furnishings that are set off by works from local artists. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas

$$ | 4455 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV, 89169, USA

\"Virgin\" may be a curious name for Las Vegas, but Sir Richard Branson's brand offers a tranquil yet sophisticated desert vibe replacing the guitars and rock memorabilia that were part of the former Hard Rock Hotel. Perhaps understandably, the deliberate shift in energy level has made the property seem a little less essential—and seldom crowded outside of concert nights. Several carryovers from the Hard Rock days remain, having been renamed or renovated, including The Theater concert venue (previously The Joint), the famous Nobu restaurant, the 24/7 coffee shop now called The Kitchen at Commons Club, and the Mexican cantina now called Lucia Mexican Grill. Newer restaurants include One Steakhouse by David and Michael Morton. The rooms and suites in the three hotel towers are now operated as part of Hilton's Curio Collection; the all-suites Ruby Tower has its own check-in area. The renovated 5-acre pool area hosts the Elia Beach Club, bordered by an event lawn for concerts and events, and patio seating for some of the restaurants. The Bar at Commons Club and adjacent Shag Room are attractive, plush lounges with a sophisticated vibe. A smaller venue, 24 Oxford, has lately been hosting the burlesque show Lady Like.

Pros

  • Tranquil resort atmosphere
  • Great, if pricey, restaurants
  • No "resort" fee or parking charges for self-parking

Cons

  • Not directly on the Strip and without a Strip shuttle
  • Hotel guests must be 21 and over

The second-floor bar and restaurant invites pre and après liveliness with plush, blue velvet couches, a DJ booth, and a large outdoor deck with fire pits. Hallways nod to Aspen's mining history with wood-patterned wallpaper, while light fixtures are informed by the look of a miner’s headlamp. Floors feature curving patterns that echo the soil found at the bottom of a smuggler’s cove. Rooms are comfortable and fun with psychedelic carpets and plush seating. Tiered beds or stacked bunks in some rooms are perfect for families and younger adult clientele. W New York - Times Square

$$ | 1567 Broadway, New York, NY, 10036, USA

The W Times Square stands out in the craziness of Midtown, thanks to its infamous 57-story exterior—if you want to be in the thick of the action, this is the place to stay. Rooms are small but sophisticated in the W's trademark glossy style, with pink and purple accents, hideaway cabinets, platform featherbeds, and sleek bathrooms. The more expensive rooms on the higher floors have impressive views to the west over the Hudson River. The modern Mexican restaurant Dos Caminos and the Living Room bar remain popular, if pricey, offshoots of the eighth-floor lobby, which is always bustling.

Pros

  • Vibrant nightlife and happy-hour scene
  • Sleek rooms
  • 24-hour room service

Cons

  • If you want quiet, head elsewhere
  • No bathtubs in the smaller rooms
  • Extra fees for pets

W San Francisco

$$$ | 181 3rd St., San Francisco, CA, 94103, USA

Chic, urbane, and nicely laid out, the W's colorful guest rooms (and unique Spectacular Studio indoor-outdoor suites with a heated patio) come with an abstract Gold Rush theme (both the 1800s one and the current tech wave) and include such comforts as upholstered window seats, pillow-top mattresses, Nespresso machines, and sleek baths with MOMO amenities by Davines. Upper floors have excellent views of SFMOMA, Yerba Buena Gardens, and the Bay Bridge. Business guests dominate during the week, but on weekends the hotel attracts families with children and pets are always very welcome. This is the first LEED-EB (for large brand hotels in existing buildings) Platinum-certified building in North America. As far as W Hotels go, this one feels a little more grown-up.

Pros

  • Nicely designed fitness center
  • Guest rooms feel refreshingly not like a chain
  • Exciting cocktails at the Living Room bar

Cons

  • The intense tech theme might seem excessive for leisure travelers
  • Feels like a convention center at peak times
  • Not great in-room noise insulation
