The best rooms are in the back on the second floor and have decks with vineyard views. All the rooms are done in subtle grays; many have fireplaces, and some have balconies. Ghost Light Inn

$$$$ | 50 S. Main St., New Hope, PA, 18938, USA

By the river in the heart of town, this luxe rustic-chic boutique hotel notches up New Hope's lodging scene with modern rooms and a restaurant and bar (Stella) overlooking the water. Earthen-tone neutrals and textured finishes—a wood-lined wall, patterned carpet, metal and leather furnishings—and large bathrooms with double sinks and pebble tile in the showers make the inn an escape from New Hope's bustle but still relate to the river location. A refrigerator, coffeemaker, robes and slippers, and Italian linens are some amenities; a few rooms have Juliet balconies. Each room has a ghost light, referring to the theatrical tradition of leaving a pole with a single lightbulb on when a theater is not occupied, for safety and also so that any ghosts can perform. A sister property a block away, the Carriage House, has two rooms and a suite; you check in at the Ghost Light if you stay there.

Pros

  • Spectacular Delaware River views from restaurant and many rooms
  • Steps from the Bucks County Playhouse via riverfront promenade
  • Gorgeous rooms with plenty of amenities

Cons

  • Events in the ballroom may disturb a quiet mood
  • River views are costly
  • Breakfast is Continental and is not included on weekends

Crammed between the large buildings along Front Street, the Gilmore—which is part of Wyndham's Trademark Collection—is a rustic historic property best suited for travelers who value character over modern amenities. Just east of the park, across from the Amtrak station, this beautiful full-service hotel built in 1913 is supported by 500- to 800-year-old Douglas firs and 3-foot-thick cedar logs; little wonder that its nickname is "Big Tree Lodge." Entertainers delight guests with storytelling and singing in the spectacular great hall, where a crackling fire blazes in a massive stone fireplace. Rooms are sparsely decorated, but historic framed posters hang on the hallway walls. The hotel has an excellent restaurant, a bar, a convenience store, and a gift shop. Glidden House

$$ | 1901 Ford Dr., Cleveland, OH, 44106, USA

For those who are skeptical of the rustic facilities and folksy banter common at many B&Bs—but who still want distinctive lodging and a personal feel—Glidden house offers a compromise. On the Case Western campus, the French Gothic mansion, built in 1910, has a traditional hotel staff and dining in its carriage house restaurant, Sergio's, which focuses on seafood and Brazilian fare. Rooms feature plasma-screen TVs and private baths. The modern room decor in particular is a welcome change from the often fussy look of some historic B&Bs. Suites are decorated more traditionally, and some have wet bars.

Glorietta Bay Inn

$ | 1630 Glorietta Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92118, USA

The main building on this property is an Edwardian-style mansion built in 1908 for sugar baron John D. Spreckels, who once owned much of Downtown San Diego. Rooms in the mansion and in the newer motel-style buildings are quaintly furnished; some have patios or balconies. The inn is adjacent to the Coronado harbor and near many restaurants and shops, but it's much smaller and quieter than the Hotel Del, across the street. $$ | 351 E. Ocean Dr., FL, 33051, USA

The Glunz family got it right when they purchased this former time-share property and put a whole lot of love into ensuring it achieved its full oceanfront potential—from the bottom-floor rooms, you can walk out your back door and your feet are in the sand, or you can also chill at the oceanfront tiki bar or one of two heated pools. The Gotham Hotel NY

$$ | 16 E. 46th St., New York, NY, 10017, USA

A sleek, modern boutique hotel, the Gotham has a lot going for it, from good-size rooms to nice amenities, but a clincher is that every room has outdoor space. There are no more than four rooms per floor, allowing families and larger parties to take over entire floors if desired. Upper floors have only two rooms per floor, both with terrific east- and westward views. Rooms are large—around 300 square feet—and include king-size beds, and gorgeous tiled bathrooms with rain showerheads and Molton Brown bath amenities. Goulding's Lodge

$$ | Off U.S. 163, Monument Valley, UT, 84536, USA

With spectacular views of Monument Valley from each room's private balcony, this historic lodge often serves as a base for film crews in the area—and has for years, as cinema greats John Wayne and John Ford used to stay here. It has handsome stucco buildings and simple rooms decorated with Native American art. The best lodging deals here are the houses and suites, which offer full kitchens and much more space than the hotel rooms for not much more money. For a true sense of Goulding's beginnings and history, spend some time at the on-site museum. Also on the grounds, the Stagecoach restaurant serves the area favorite, a Navajo taco, along with many traditional American entrées. Goulding's offers custom-guided tours of Monument Valley and provides Navajo guides into the backcountry, where you're not allowed to venture on your own. The lodge is 2 miles off U.S. 163, at the Monument Valley Tribal Park turnoff, about 25 miles southwest of Mexican Hat.

Pros

  • Stunning views
  • One of the only lodgings in the park
  • Dark skies and quiet nights

Cons

  • It's miles from anything in any direction
  • Prices fluctuate wildly
  • You pay a high price for the unique setting
