The Independent

$$$ | 1234 Locust St., Philadelphia, PA, 19107, USA

The Independent is among a handful of newer boutique alternatives to Philadelphia's big convention hotels. This property features 24 well-appointed, hip rooms that are all uniquely furnished, but share a warm butterscotch and ocher palette with funky accents, such as leopard-print rugs, exposed brick walls, and copper-tiled ceilings. The hotel's corridors ring a skylighted four-story atrium adorned with local art. Complimentary wine and cheese are served daily in the cozy lobby, and continental breakfast is offered daily, too. Little Nonna's, and Bud and Marilyn's, two eateries from prolific Philly restaurateurs Marcie Turney and Valerie Safran, occupy the ground floor of the hotel. Indian Springs Calistoga

$$$ | 1712 Lincoln Ave., Calistoga, CA, 94515, USA

Palm-studded Indian Springs—operating as a spa since 1862—ably splits the difference between laid-back and chic in accommodations that include lodge rooms, suites, cottages, stand-alone bungalows, and two houses. All are thoughtfully decorated in a simple style, with rich pastels and high-thread-count bedding. Some of the sweetest accommodations are in the View Room category; the largest sleep four easily. The cottages, most of them slightly larger, are extremely popular with regulars (book well in advance); rooms in the lodge, though small, are equally peaceful and represent good value. Playing bocce ball and hanging out on the broad lawn provide diversion when you're not indulging in volcanic-ash mud baths, soaking in the toasty Olympic-size mineral-water pool, or dining at Sam's Social Club.

Pros

  • Sprawling grounds with outdoor seating areas
  • On-site Sam's Social Club restaurant
  • Enormous mineral pool

Cons

  • Lodge rooms are small
  • Rooms have showers but no tubs
  • Minimum-stay requirement on some weekends

Inn at Whitewing Farm

$$$ | 370 Valley Rd., West Chester, PA, 19382, USA

Just 2 miles from Longwood Gardens, this family-run, countryside bed-and-breakfast on 13 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds and gardens offers more amenities than most and has plush, traditionally furnished rooms and suites in four buildings separate from the main house. Whitewing Farm was originally the home of Russell and Bertha Pippen (he was a vice president of the DuPont Company), and today this romantic mini-resort is run by several generations of a family who enjoy helping guests explore the area. Rooms generally reflect comfortable country style with pretty prints and dark wood furnishings, but some have upgraded to more modern, neutral decor. It's good to check the website's property map for each room's location. An outdoor pool, a tennis court, and a pond for fishing provide reasons to linger on-site, and breakfasts in the 1796 Hay Barn are a major event with three courses such as a French toast soufflé and lemon blueberry ricotta pancakes. A few calm blocks from the downtown action on a nearly 1-acre lot with landscaped gardens, the Inn on Randolph—with a Gothic revival–style main house and its five guest rooms plus five historic cottages out back—is a sophisticated haven known for its gourmet gluten-free breakfasts and snacks. A large room at this spiffed-up downtown St. Helena inn is named for author Ambrose Bierce (The Devil's Dictionary), who lived in the main Victorian structure in the early 1900s, but sensitive hospitality and modern amenities are what make a stay worth writing home about.
