The condos here—many with cathedral ceilings and all with large furnished lanai and big windows overlooking the lawns—give the 85-acre development the feeling of a quiet retreat inside and out. Walking paths connect eight distinct resort zones to both Brennecke's and Shipwreck Beaches, but to swim or snorkel safely, walk the extra 100 yards past Brennecke's to reach calmer Poipu Beach. The eight-court tennis club is well established, offers pro lessons, and hosts tournaments.  As one of the largest condo developments in the area, Poipu Kai has a wide variety of unit styles and sizes, and multiple rental agencies. The one- and two-bedroom units offered by Aqua Aston are a good value.

Right on the shore beneath the beautiful South Beach Park, this small, unpretentious resort was recently bought and renovated with a clean, modern decor. A few good restaurants are within walking distance, and it's a short drive to the plethora along Ocean Drive. The area by the beach is quite lovely, with a small pool, two shuffleboards, tiki huts for shade, and plenty of beach chairs.

Importing much of its sensibility from Japan, the Kitano has international touches that include a bilingual concierge and a high-concept Japanese restaurant called Hakubai—it also makes for a notably service-oriented stay. What is not classically Japanese, though, are the good-size guest rooms, decked out in neutral hues or with pops of red. Head downstairs through the quiet lobby to rub Fernando Botero's rotund sculpture of a dog for good luck—it's the hotel's mascot. Named for Prince Carl Solms, the German prince from Braunfels Castle who founded New Braunfels, this historic inn—the longest-running hotel in the area—has been lovingly restored to reflect its original Victorian charm.
