Red Cliffs Lodge

$$$$ | Hwy. 128, mile marker 14, Moab, UT, 84532, USA

Director John Ford discovered this working cattle ranch in the late 1940s and used it as the setting for several of his westerns, and you can feel transported into one as you gaze onto the Colorado River and high canyon walls from your simple but elegant room. The River Queen cabins are especially nice, with private decks overlooking the rapids below. All rooms have western-style decor, including log furniture and Saltillo-tiled bathrooms. Attractions include an on-site winery, a movie memorabilia museum, and plenty of space to walk and enjoy the location. The helpful staff are happy to arrange guided rafting, hiking, biking, and off-road tours throughout your stay. Although it's not a traditional guest ranch, horseback riding, guided by real-life cowboys and cowgirls, is also offered. With all the adventure here, you'll probably work up an appetite, and The Cowboy Grill at Red Cliffs serves excellent meals. It's a good thing, too, because town is about 14 miles away.

Pros

  • Beautiful spot, with peaceful canyon and river views
  • Many luxury amenities and great restaurant
  • Private cabins are woodsy but modern

Cons

  • Drive to town can be long during busy season
  • Spotty cell service
  • Not all rooms have river or creek views

The Red Fox Inn and Tavern

$$ | 2 E. Washington St., Middleburg, VA, 20117, USA

Built in 1728 of local fieldstone, Mr. Chinn's Ordinary (tavern) was sited on the vast estate of Thomas, sixth Lord Fairfax. George Washington visited the popular tavern in 1748. During the Civil War the inn served as a headquarters and hospital for Confederates. Today it is on the National Register of Historic Places. Guest rooms are spread across four buildings, the Red Fox (where the tavern and restaurant are also located), the Stray Fox, the 12 East Building, and the Middleburg House. Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa

$ | 11011 W. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV, 89135, USA

Way out on the western edge of the Las Vegas suburbs, this swanky golden-age Vegas property looks out on the ocher-red Spring Mountains, just a stone's throw from Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. Inside, dozens of crystal chandeliers contrast with earthy sandstone walls and teak-marble floors. Rooms upstairs are among the nicest in all of Vegas, mixing modern touches such as mini-sculptures and USB ports with traditional elements such as couches. Suites take accommodations to another level, with pool tables and private patios (some even with private pools). Red Rock has a large public pool area, a 16-screen movie theater, a bowling alley, a vast selection of excellent restaurants (some with outdoor patios), and rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows. Even the gaming area is exquisite; the sports book has its own VIP area and three video walls that can combine into one huge screen. There's also a poker room. Factor in the live music in the hopping Rocks Lounge, occasional ticketed concerts in the backyard pool area and walking distance to baseball and other attractions in the Downtown Summerlin shopping district, and you can see why a lot of repeat visitors decide to skip the Strip.

Pros

  • Bowling alley and movie theater on-site
  • Nice, expansive pool area
  • Proximity to Red Rock Canyon

Cons

  • Waitress service in gaming areas can be slow
  • Long distance from Strip
  • Summertime concerts by pool bring crowds

Reed's Lodge

$$ | 514 E. Main St., Springerville, AZ, 85938, USA

This older motor lodge might have new ownership, but it's still decidedly, and charmingly, stuck in the past: what used to be a complete homage to the American Western is now home to a kitschy, quirky vibe throughout the motel-style rooms, which are being renovated one-by-one.
