Painted Lady Bed & Brew

$$ | 1100 Bellamah Ave. NW, Albuquerque, NM, 87104, USA

On a quiet side street on the fringe of Albuquerque’s Sawmill-Wells Park districts, a particular personality is revealed in this low-slung historic adobe: while it decidedly favors fans of the ever-growing craft brew scene, it also offers comfortably appointed suites that have been thoughtfully modernized from their original early 1900s construction. A balanced mix of restoration (the haint blue paint and wooden bead-board ceilings are true to their era) and upgrade (kitchens and bathrooms—aside from the recreation of period penny-tile flooring—are pure 21st century) is complemented by vintage prints and photographs and modern furnishings, with some pieces more successful than others. Inspired by its one-time life as a saloon and dance hall with a “wine room in connection” (or, in period code, brothel), Painted Lady owes its name to the building’s checkered history. Today, the closest connection to the past is the brew aspect of the operation: a daily 55-minute “hoppy hour” brings guests a local beer of choice, to be enjoyed in the pleasant garden’s nooklike seating areas or in the refurbished mid-20th-century trolley that sits near the entrance.

Pros

  • Garden seating enhanced with murals and locally hand-forged metalwork
  • Cool history
  • Two afternoon beers free

Cons

  • Creative furnishings vary in appeal
  • Two-night stay may be required
  • Beer beats breakfast (no meal offered)

Funky artwork fills the guest rooms and public spaces of this inn above a popular eatery. A slightly disheveled East Village flavor prevails here. Simple furnishings reminiscent of the 1970s are a backdrop for the eclectic paintings, multimedia works, and bright murals. Down-home cooking with creative twists keeps the locals coming to the restaurant downstairs.

Pros

  • Affordable rates
  • Great restaurant on-site

Palace Hotel

$ | 106 W. Broadway, Silver City, NM, 88061, USA

This grand two-story building was built in 1882 as a bank, but it was reinvented as a hotel in 1900. News accounts at the time touted the Palace as a first-class lodging with the intimacy of a small European hotel. The New Mexico Historical Preservation Office helped to restore and reopen the hotel in 1990, keeping much of the historical detail intact. Some rooms have Western-style furnishings, others have neo-Victorian decor such as ruffled pillow coverings and bed skirts. The upstairs room is a peaceful spot for playing board games or reading.

Pros

  • Located downtown
  • Steeped in history
  • Free Wi-Fi

Cons

  • No a/c, which is okay most of the time at this elevation, but it can get downright hot

Palace Station Hotel & Casino

$ | 2411 W. Sahara Ave., Las Vegas, NV, 89102, USA

This is where the whole \"locals casinos\" trend began, when a one-time Bingo Palace evolved into Palace Station, now with fully remodeled rooms that, while modern, are still pretty basic and not large. But good luck finding any vestiges of the 1970s and '80s original beyond the basic footprint and The Oyster Bar, a sentimental favorite. Most of the interior has been remodeled to keep Palace Station in line with the newer, more upscale sister properties that the Station Casinos brand has grown into. The original motel rooms were razed to become a casino expansion, which included a new pool area with cabanas. A corner of the property was expanded for two spacious new restaurants and, above them, a nine-screen movie theater with a \"wine and dine while you watch\" concept. Palace now has a balance of casino-operated restaurants (The Brass Fork coffee shop and Charcoal Room steakhouse) and leased-out spaces, including new branches of two local favorites: Lindo Michoacan for Mexican food, and China Mama, which took over the bright, airy space originally given to The Boathouse Asian Eatery. It's next door to Tailgate Social, where the sports bar–themed atmosphere and menu come with sunlight and windows uncommon to a casino. One thing that hasn't changed is the easy access of the sports book just inside the west entry, making it easy to participate in the company's famous football contest.

Pros

  • Makeover in 2018
  • Plenty of free parking
  • Amazing choice of good restaurants

Cons

  • Car ride from Strip
  • Smoky, Old-Vegas casino floor
  • Lines or waits for popular eateries

Palihotel San Diego

$$ | 830 6th Ave., San Diego, CA, USA

Originally built in 1912, the former St. James Hotel was fully redesigned in 2023 and now features a nautically inspired elegance that nods to the building's history. The vibrant rooftop lounge features gorgeous views of the Gaslamp District, San Diego Bay, and the Coronado Bridge, and offers full bar service and light bites when open between March and November. The all-day eatery, Saint James French Diner, combines the feel of a classic American diner with the subtlety of a French bistro and offers room service for dinner only. Due to the age of the building, some of the rooms feel a bit small with some odd layouts (like a vanity in the sitting area), but each one is beautifully designed with Bellino linens on comfortable beds. Wi-Fi is free, as is the Nespresso machine in each room, and dogs and service animals are welcome for $100 for the entire stay. Nevertheless, the fee can be waived with proof of documentation for service animals. Leave the kids at home—this hotel is meant more for business travelers and design-savvy visitors.

Pros

  • Elegant rooftop space with wonderful views
  • All-day dining at the Saint James French Diner
  • Brand-new design and furnishings

Cons

  • Rooftop can only be reached by narrow stairs (no elevator access)

$ | 417 Stockton St., San Francisco, CA, 94108, USA

Situated at the foot of the Stockton Tunnel, this beautiful property is now under the careful, hip eye of the Palisociety boutique hotel group, but its strong suits continue to be food and drink, a prime location, and a modern-meets-vintage aesthetic. Patrons enter the small lobby before ascending in a caged elevator to guest rooms and suites or going up a set of stairs to the second floor, where Fisher Loft serves complimentary coffee and pastries mornings. Rooms have exposed white-brick walls that contrast with the chic furnishings (small, café-style round tables in most rooms) and high-end touches like rainfall showerheads and Nespresso machines.

Pandora's Manor

$$$$ | 407 W. High Ave., High Point, NC, 27260, USA

It's a wonder there wasn't a place like this in a furniture town already: a boutique inn with rooms impeccably designed by different interior designers, from Bravo TV's Thom Filicia to the NC-based Madcap Cottage. Not a detail has been overlooked here, from hand-painted wallpaper to custom dog beds. Two suites have room to work or entertain, while Celerie Kemble's room has a standalone tub and veranda. Events are often held on the tented lawn or in the showpiece kitchen, which also serves guests elaborate breakfasts and snacks. The clientele is mostly industry and visiting university parents, who enjoy every luxury with rates to match.

Pros

  • Literally the apex of interior design
  • King beds in all rooms
  • Sumptuous breakfast

Cons

  • Expensive rate, no matter the season
  • Weddings and events often book out the house
  • Geared towards couples and industry pros

Paniolo Ranch

$$ | 1510 Farm to Market Rd. 473, Boerne, TX, 78006, USA

You'll have to drive down a winding back road to reach this Hawaiian-named retreat, but once you see the beautiful rolling valley below its hilltop perch overlooking a sparkling lake, you'll be glad you made the trip. The property features five accommodations—four private cottages, each with a suite or two rooms as well as luxurious living spaces; and one suite in the main house. The O'Hana House is the most private and has some of the best views of the ranch; it also has its own hot tub, ideal for stargazing before bed.

Pros

  • Luxurious decor
  • On-site spa, pool, hot tubs
  • Beautiful remote property

Cons

  • Slightly difficult to find
  • No restaurant, but delicious meals are available for pre-order

Pantai Inn

$$$ | 1003 Coast Blvd., San Diego, CA, 92037, USA

Located along La Jolla coastline with ocean views from almost every corner, this sophisticated, Bali-inspired inn offers a mix of studios, one- and two-bedroom suites, and cottages. Diverging from the pastel, beachy-chic vibe that dominates neighboring properties, Pantai’s decor features dark mahogany canopy beds, South Asian artwork, fireplaces, and copper sinks that give the property a retreat-like experience that extends to the inn’s stellar service and refusal to nickel-and-dime guests; complimentary amenities include Wi-Fi, breakfast, beach amenities, and beverages in the lobby. Beyond the courtyard fountains are tropical-chic rooms with Tommy Bahama-esque furnishings, river-rock rain showers, and amenities like 60'' flat-screen TVs, fireplaces, and full kitchens. Although the spacious suites appeal to groups, Pantai’s serene atmosphere is not the ideal property for small children.

Pros

  • Spacious rooms
  • Ocean views
  • Use of surfboards and beach supplies

Cons

  • No pool, fitness center, or elevator
  • Not pet-friendly
  • Daily parking $25
