By far the largest hotel in Delray Beach, this resort, formerly a Marriott, has two towers on a stellar plot of land at the east end of Atlantic Avenue—it's the only hotel that directly overlooks the water, yet it is still within walking distance of restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. Rooms and suites are spacious, and many have stunning ocean views. If you want a bit of pampering, there's also a spa. Orbit In Hotel

$$ | 562 W. Arenas Rd., Palm Springs, CA, 92262, USA

The exterior architecture—nearly flat roofs, wide overhangs, glass everywhere—of this hip, adults-only, Herbert Burns–designed inn on a quiet street dates from its 1955 opening, and the period feel continues inside, where rooms, some with kitchenettes, all have patios and are appointed with mid-mod furnishings by Charles and Ray Eames, Marcel Breuer, and other contemporaries. Vintage LPs and in-room record players add to the throwback ambiance. Retro cruiser bikes, books, games, and videos are available for guest use.

Orchard Hotel

$$ | 665 Bush St., San Francisco, CA, 94108, USA

Unlike many of the area's other boutique hotels, which occupy century-old buildings, the Orchard was built in 2000—though the marble lobby, with dramatic architectural embellishments like arched openings, vaulted ceilings, and stone floors, evokes another era. Pacific Inn Motel

$$ | 352 S. Forks Ave., Forks, 98331, USA

It may not look like much from the outside, but one of the only motels for 50 miles in either direction is a comfortable and clean budget choice and a handy base for exploring Olympic National Park, with spacious rooms with modern furnishings and framed landscape photos. A couple of accommodations do stand out, however: a kitschy Twilight-themed room with framed movie posters and a red-and-black color scheme, and one larger suite with a full kitchen and separate living room.

Pros

  • Affordable rates are a good value
  • Central location
  • Immaculately kept

Cons

  • No breakfast
  • Low on frills
  • Not in a scenic part of town
