Amenities abound at this clandestine retreat, including four hot tubs and swimming pools, hammocks, a gymnasium, and gardens, all showered with touches of luxury and class. Units range from standard suites to individual three-story homes, often attracting the power players of the LGBTQ+ community.

This Swiss-style ski-in ski-out lodge is a winner for skiers, combining upscale accommodations with an unpretentious attitude. The aura of laid-back luxury comes from little extras such as afternoon tea or hot chocolate by the fireplace in the lobby; there's even an on-site ski shop. Rooms are clean and light. Dinner is rather formal, with jacket and tie upgraded to black tie Wednesday and Saturday evenings. The deposit alone is $500, without which you don't get directions. But that's the point of exclusivity, isn't it?

Adjacent to the S’Klallam Tribe's Point Casino, this contemporary hotel has spacious rooms brightly decorated in patterns, colors, and materials consistent with the tribe's aesthetic, and the four-story building's cedar-plank exterior recalls an ancient longhouse. This former Ramada has everything you could want in a budget hotel: reasonable rates and a location convenient to all the museums, plantation houses, and business centers of Newport News, plus Fort Lee, NASA Langley, Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Busch Gardens. The rooms, decorated in dated paisley prints and mahogany furnishings, have refrigerators and microwaves. Don't overlook the free shuttle for Newport News Williamsburg Airport and the Amtrak station. Ask for a room in the "tower," the most recently renovated part of the hotel.

All cottage units have wood floors, full kitchens, laundry access, and are decorated in tropical shades. The cheerful 1930s plantation home set in a century-old plumeria grove has four bedrooms with private baths and can be operated as four bed-and-breakfast suites.

Plenty of legendary characters, including Buffalo Bill and Calamity Jane, have stayed at this 1893 landmark in the heart of Red Lodge's historic district—Ernest Hemingway even mentioned the place in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Large common spaces have who'd've-thunk-it combinations like bright faux-marble walls, a painted checkerboard floor, and a leopard-print runner; most guest rooms are hand-painted with fun florals, bird motifs, and even gold pom-poms—no two rooms are alike. The inn feels like a laid-back gallery, with almost every available surface covered by art; somehow it all comes together, creating a whimsical, outrageous, and wonderful effect. The delicious breakfast, featuring a wide range of buffet-style options—including, of course, pomegranates—can't be beat.

At this 1930s hotel restored to its former glory, chicness abounds throughout in shades of green, floral, and plush. Don't be discouraged by the building clutter around the office. Inside, the rooms have bright paint jobs, new floors, and modern kitchens. Room 9 is closest to the beach.

With a lodge, café, and general store on the eastern side of Chiricahua National Monument, this humble structure near the New Mexico border is notable less for its rooms (clean and pleasant but nondescript) than for its winged visitors: the elegant trogon, 14 types of hummingbird, and 10 species of owl are among the 330 varieties of birds that flock to nearby Cave Creek canyon. The rooms, all with two full-size beds, microwave, refrigerator, and coffeemaker, share a large deck. The café serves breakfast, lunch, dinner, and cocktails every day until 6:30 pm.
