Nobu Hotel Palo Alto

$$$ | 180 Hamilton Ave., Palo Alto, CA, 94301, USA

When Silicon Valley tech money meets the country’s biggest celebrity sushi chef, you get this ultra-contemporary luxury hotel with, of course, a Nobu restaurant included. Japanese design elements are sprinkled throughout the public spaces and guest rooms, including yukata robes for guests and specific ryokan suites that include deep-soaking teak tubs. The sharp, serene room aesthetic emphasizes clean lines and beautiful furniture, rather than crowding walls and tables with art. And it’s hard not to escape one of the biggest assets of all—that you can order Nobu's restaurant food for room service.

Pros

  • Top-quality in-house restaurant
  • Beautifully designed rooms
  • Some rooms have balconies facing the Santa Cruz Mountains

Cons

  • Relatively small deluxe and premium rooms
  • Feels more like Vegas than Palo Alto
  • Comparatively limited amenities

Noftsger Hill Inn

$ | 425 North St., Globe, AZ, 85501, USA

Built in 1907, this B&B was originally the North Globe Schoolhouse; now classrooms serve as guest rooms, filled with mining-era antiques and affording fantastic views of the Pinal Mountains and historic Old Dominion Mine. All rooms have private baths; one has air-conditioning, and the rest have evaporative coolers, which work well at this higher elevation. You can walk off "miner-size" breakfasts on the enjoyable hike through the scenic Copper Hills just outside.

  • Unlike any hotel you've visited

The Nolitan Hotel

$$ | 30 Kenmare St., New York, NY, 10012, USA

It's undeniably cool, combining a hip, slightly gritty feel with some luxe touches, but don't expect a lot of space to spread out—guest rooms have exposed distressed-cement ceilings and walls, with minimalist modern decor; north-facing rooms have unobstructed views of the Empire State Building (ask for a room with a terrace during warm months). A curtain separates the shower from the sleeping area.

Pros

  • Cool vibe
  • Fun location convenient to Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn
  • Fabulous views from some rooms

Cons

  • Standard rooms are small

Nome Nugget Inn

$$$ | 315 Front St., Nome, AK, 99762, USA

Typhoon Merbok significantly damaged this iconic inn in late 2022, but the new owners have steadily returned the Nugget to its former glory, with the same kitschy Victorian Gold Rush–era decor and engaging vibes. Outside, a signpost marks the mileage to various points, serious and silly, around the globe. Inside, frontier memorabilia abounds in the lobby and lounge. Rooms are small and clean, although not nearly as atmospheric as the public spaces. Many Arctic tour groups stay here.

Pros

  • Cool atmosphere in public areas
  • Central location
  • Bering Sea views

Cons

  • Dated room decor
  • Bar noise
  • Old-hotel idiosyncrasies

Normandy Inn

$ | 21 Tuttle Ave., Spring Lake, NJ, 07762, USA

This multicolor painted lady, circa 1889, has red rooftops and a central, square tower. The interior is filled with period antiques, including stain-glass lamps throughout, ladies' handiwork from the 1800s in the dining room, and intricate carved-wood furniture. Floral wallpapers and area rugs complement the Victorian pieces. The largest rooms are the most comfortable; on the other end of the spectrum, the tiny tower room (Room 200) feels a bit like the crows nest of an old schooner, looking out at the ocean a half block away.

Pros

North Beach Resort & Villas

$$$ | 719 N. Beach Blvd., North Myrtle Beach, SC, 29582, USA

North Bend Plantation Bed & Breakfast

$ | 12200 Weyanoke Rd., Charles City, VA, 23030, USA

As a working farm, this spot stands out from similar B&Bs in the area; inside, antebellum-era antiques original to the house, as well as Civil War maps and artifacts, decorate every room. The 1819 Greek Revival home was built for Sarah Harrison, sister of President William Henry Harrison, by her husband John Minge. Rooms are generously sized, particularly for a home of this era. There's a nice pool on peaceful grounds, which will appeal to families. The Southern breakfast here might include buttermilk biscuits, Smithfield ham, apple butter, bacon and sausage, and strong coffee, served on antique china. Reviewers rave about hospitality of the hosts.

North Branch Inn

$$ | 869 N. Branch Rd., NY, 12766, USA
One of the newest properties in the Catskills, the North Branch Inn—a labor of love for the husband-and-wife team of Sims Foster and Kirsten Harlow Foster—is tucked away in a tiny town of the same name, and has lots of fun finds, like a screening room with a row of seats from Radio City Music Hall and an elegantly curved bar from the 1939 World's Fair. The best just might be the two-lane bowling alley, uncovered when this 1868 clapboard structure was renovated in 2015. In addition to a wood-paneled restaurant serving foods sourced from around New York State, there are five cozy guest rooms in the main building, where you'll find original woodwork and wide-plank floors. Across the street is a second building with four spacious suites where you can read in your own sitting area or soak in a claw-foot tub.
