Marriott Columbus

$$ | 800 Front Ave., Columbus, GA, 31901, USA

On the site of a vast 1860s complex of warehouses, factories, mills, and a Confederate arsenal, this hotel is a key component of the Columbus Convention and Trade Center just across the street. The rooms and public areas are modern—the lobby has huge skylights that allow natural light to pour in onto the marble floors and the original brickwork of its cotton-mill origins. Rooms are simple but tasteful, and many overlook the Riverwalk Park. With a terrific location between Broadway's Victorian district and the Riverwalk, and a Houlihan's restaurant, the Marriott was a key-player of the city's downtown revival and still a great choice.

Pros

  • Excellent riverfront location
  • Modern amenities
  • Historic space

Cons

  • Large facility may be a turnoff to some
  • Often booked for events
  • Some guests complain about train noise

Marriott Hutchinson Island Beach Resort, Golf & Marina

$$ | 555 N.E. Ocean Blvd., Stuart, FL, 34996, USA

With a 77-slip marina, a full water-sports program, a golf course, two pools, tons of tennis courts, and children's activities, this self-contained resort is excellent for families, most of whom prefer to stay in the tower directly on the ocean. Nevertheless, the main building on the Intracoastal Waterway (or Indian River, as it is called here) has a lovely, spacious pool courtyard and shuttle transport to the beach. The rooms have quality fixtures like granite vanities, plush bedding, and soothing beach-accented decor. Wet bars are in all guest rooms, and the rooms in the beachside Sandpiper building have kitchenettes. The staff here are genuinely friendly and interested in making you feel at home—so much so that they'll organize children's activities even if yours are the only kids on the property. At the resort's golf-centric Ocean Club, you'll find 18 holes, a warm-up aqua range, and a putting green for members and hotel guests only. The only thing this hotel doesn't have is a wide range of eating options (there's an outdoor café at each pool, and there's just one indoor sit-down restaurant), but it gives you more of an excuse to try the great local cuisine.

Pros

  • Attentive, warm staff
  • Rooms are comfortable and casually chic
  • All rooms have balconies

Cons

  • Common areas are a bit dated
  • No spa
  • Daily resort fee

Recommended Fodor's Video

Marriott Jacksonville Hotel

$ | 245 Water St., Jacksonville, FL, 32202, USA

From the upper levels of this imposing 16-floor tower, which is across the street from the Jacksonville Center for the Performing Arts, the smart, neutral colors and modern lines of the furnishings set off the views of the St. Johns River and its iconic bridges. A marble-floored, wood-paneled lobby leads to the reception area, an upscale lounge (JBar), and Juliette's Bistro, where cozy banquettes and tables bask in the airiness of a lofty atrium. Bell service is exemplary; many porters have more than a decade on the job, so they can and will happily help you find just about anything, including a cab.

Pros

  • On-site restaurant
  • Heated, fourth-floor pool with views of the river
  • Pet-friendly

Cons

  • Fee for Wi-Fi and parking
  • Pricey restaurant
  • Can be chaotic when there's a show across the street

Marriott Kingsgate Conference Hotel

$$$$ | 151 Goodman Dr., Cincinnati, OH, 45219, USA

Good lodging can be limited around the University of Cincinnati. Many visitors end up staying in a bed and breakfast near this urban campus or in a Downtown hotel, but the Marriott Kingsgate is an excellent alternative. It's on the UC hospital campus, a few blocks from the Cincinnati Zoo, and five minutes from downtown Cincinnati. Rooms are clean, and the beds especially plush. The campus area can be congested and does not have ready Interstate access. If you plan on a lot of back-and-forth travel outside the Downtown/UC area, consider staying in another neighborhood.

Marriott Marquis Washington, D.C.

$$$ | 901 Massachusetts Ave. NW, Washington, DC, 20001, USA

This eco-friendly hotel, directly adjacent to the Washington Convention Center, spans an entire city block and is capped with an enormous atrium skylight accentuating the dramatic lobby sculpture. There are plenty of fun amenities on-site, including three restaurants, a sports bar, a bi-level health club, and two lounges. The exterior is a mix of glass and steel, yet the design cleverly incorporates the facade of the historic former headquarters of the American Federation of Labor, built in 1916.

Pros

  • Location near Metro
  • Nicely designed building
  • Within walking distance of great restaurants

Cons

With more than 1,000 rooms, more than 70,000 square feet of meeting space, and a 40,000-square-foot ballroom, this 38-story hotel has all the pluses—and minuses—of a very large hotel. You may have all the services you could want and you're in the heart of the action, but if you're looking for a secluded getaway, this isn't it.  There's a fitness center and indoor/outdoor pool. The Maven Hotel at Dairy Block

$$$ | 1850 Wazee St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA

Located atop the Milk Market on the Dairy Block within walking distance of Coors Field, the Maven's quiet, larger-than-average rooms help shield guests from the chaos going on in the lobby and surrounding area. The front desk is a bit hidden within the bustling entrance, but once upstairs that all fades away in the modern, chic rooms, which offer lofted ceilings, massive windows with Coors Field or city views, and art that's unique to each space (the art hanging around the rest of the hotel is worth checking out, too). The $25 (plus tax) daily amenity fee gets guests a cup of coffee each morning, a beverage during happy hour, use of a courtesy car within a 2-mile radius, and access to a small but decent fitness center as well as discounts on food and shopping. Some rooms sport a swing or sectional sofa while others have a walk-out balcony or soaking tub; there are bunk-bed rooms available, too, which are ideal for families (guests need to request specific room attributes). This comfortable hotel is next door to a top-rated New Mexico golf course (the Links at Sierra Blanca) and to the Ruidoso Convention Center. A dramatic rock fireplace looms majestically over the lobby; the indoor pool and hot tub are enclosed within a two-story atrium. A complimentary full breakfast (with eggs made to order) is served in a dining area that has views onto the 9th hole and surrounding mountains. Most rooms have views of meadows, pine trees, or the golf course; be sure to request a room with a view. Soft-yellow interiors with wood furnishings complete the feel of cozy luxury. King rooms have private balconies, fireplaces, in-room whirlpool tubs, and sitting rooms with kitchenettes. Guests get discounts on greens fees.
