The Lowell Hotel

$$$$ | 28 E. 63rd St., New York, NY, 10065, USA

Steps from Madison Avenue shopping and a block from Central Park, this old-money refuge on a leafy residential block started in 1927 and it still delivers genteel sophistication and pampering service in an unbeatable location. In fact, the 74-room hotel is one of a few remaining family-owned properties in the city, and is a member of Leading Hotels of the World. The lobby is small, but spacious guest rooms have all the civilized comforts of home, including stocked bookshelves and luxe bathrooms. Thirty-three of the rooms—all decorated in different themes—have working wood-burning fireplaces, while 14 accommodations have private terraces. Many suites feature Apple computers and iPads, and the New York Times and other major newspapers are delivered to the room. The elegant Pembroke Room is a guest-only breakfast and weekend brunch area and it's also available for pre-theater dinner. The Club Room lounge is for guests too. Other appealing on-site facilities are Majorelle, a well-regarded French-Mediterranean restaurant that has an afternoon tea service; and Jacques, a cocktail bar with a limited bar menu and lunch service. The Lucerne Hotel

$$$ | 201 W. 79th St., New York, NY, 10024, USA

While updated and refreshed guest rooms don't—and maybe just can't—live up to the sophisticated and gorgeous exterior of this 1904 landmark building, they are clean, comfortable, and calm, and best of all convenient to the American Museum of Natural History and Central Park just a few blocks away. Standard rooms are small and decorated with dark-wood traditional furniture and neutral color schemes. Downstairs, the bistro Nice Matin is a popular draw (ask about a guest discount). The upscale residential neighborhood has an impressive array of boutiques and gourmet-food shops, including the nearby Zabar's.

LUMA Hotel San Francisco

$$ | 100 Channel St., San Francisco, CA, 94158, USA

Located just over a block away from Oracle Park, the second-ever location of this emerging boutique hotel brand is the first hotel in rapidly growing Mission Bay. The hotel's flagship features are the stunning rooftop bar, Cavaña, and an in-room food delivery robot named Henry. However, the rooms and amenities themselves are well worth a stay on their own, nicely balancing sharp modern design with a refined touch. Frette bedding, robes, and slippers ensure a comfortable evening; guests will also enjoy a number of thoughtful amenities like handheld garment steamers, an expansive work desk, and motorized window shades that truly block out sunlight. Above all, travelers will be thankful that this is that increasing rarity in the hotel world these days—there is no destination or resort fee.

Pros

  • Fun, walkable area
  • Special package for Warriors fans that includes game tickets in a suite
  • Very good coffee and pastries in Twyne Coffee Bar

Cons

  • Some in-room tech elements can be confusing
  • Entrance can be a scene because of rooftop bar

Luxor Las Vegas Hotel & Casino

$ | 3900 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Las Vegas, NV, 89119, USA

Unlike other hotels on the Strip, this one has no \"elevators,\" at least in the main pyramid; instead, in order to reach rooms, guests must climb the slanted walls in one of four \"inclinators,\" which creep along and have seen better days. On each floor, open-air hallways overlook the world's largest atrium. Pyramid rooms are large but otherwise nondescript and occasionally in a poor state of repair. One wall slopes because of the building's design—an interesting effect, but it makes these rooms feel cramped. We prefer the twin 22-story towers next door: they're newer and have brighter rooms with large windows, many that offer killer views of the pyramid. Bathrooms are spacious and have separate showers and tubs. Suites in the pyramid have plenty of extra space and deep whirlpool tubs with brilliant views of the skyline. The Luxor has one of the largest pools on the South Strip. For a truly indulgent treat, rent a cabana and receive poolside VIP services such as hand-delivered treats and iced aromatherapy towels.

Pros

  • Decent value
  • Hip casino

The Lyle Hotel

$ | 100 7th St., Lyle, 98635, USA

Built in the early 20th century a block from still very active train tracks (rooms are equipped with ear plugs), this friendly and slightly quirky 10-room boutique hotel is a well-situated and affordable base for exploring the many exceptional wineries between Lyle and Maryhill. Try to stay here Thursday through Saturday, when the great on-site restaurant, with lovely outdoor garden seating, is open—it serves hearty portions of eclectic comfort fare and features an impressive list of local craft beers and wines.

M Resort Spa Casino

$ | 12300 Las Vegas Blvd. S, Henderson, NV, 89044, USA

Built by the Marnells, the same family that created the Rio, this resort is 6 miles south of Harry Reid Airport and is a destination unto itself. Sitting at an elevation 400 feet higher than the majority of Strip hotels, the M literally looks down on the rest of Las Vegas. Standard rooms are spacious and modern, with chocolate-brown carpet and dark-wood furniture. Floor-to-ceiling windows offer picture-perfect views of the desert. All rooms come with electronic sensors that dim the lights when guests are absent, to conserve energy. Downstairs, at Spa Mio, the focus is on personal luxury—therapists offer everything from facials to massages and haircuts. Relaxation continues by the pool, which is small but feels ultra-exclusive. The casino, which has windows to let in natural light, hums with excitement—a spacious race and sports book with mobile gaming technology is among the most popular attractions. Out back, the resort hosts live concerts under the desert night sky. Since the NFL came to Vegas in 2020, the property has also become the \"Official Team HQ Hotel\" for the Las Vegas Raiders, complete with its own Raiders-themed restaurant.

Pros

  • Huge rooms
  • Convenient yet removed from hubbub
  • Views of Strip

Cons

MacCallum House

$$ | 45020 Albion St., Mendocino, CA, 95460, USA

A historic boutique property set on 2 flower-filled acres in the middle of town, MacCallum House strikes the perfect balance between Victorian charm and modern luxury. Guest rooms in the main house and renovated barn (six in each) feel genteel and romantic (the ones in the barn are larger and look more contemporary), while the seven cottages nearby are bright and honeymoon-y. One of them, the water tower, is unforgettable, with a living room on the first floor, a sauna on the second, and an ocean view from the bed on the third. Other accommodations have a private outdoor hot tub or a sauna-equipped bathroom. The MacCallum lineup also includes 10 modern luxury suites a few blocks away. The longtime chef at the outstanding restaurant, one of Mendocino's best, hand selects the best local ingredients, and everything from pasta to ice cream is prepared daily from scratch.

The Mad Carpenter Inn

$ | 353 N. 8th St., Laramie, WY, 82072, USA

When you stay here, you'll likely meet the "Mad Carpenter" himself, Lawrence Thomas, who lovingly restored this historic home with the help of his wife, Danny Rue, whose fabulous homemade granola is available every morning with breakfast. For a bit more money, you can rent "The Dollhouse," a separate cottage behind the main home that has its own deck, kitchenette, and jetted tub. Two other guesthouses suitable for larger groups are nearby but don't include breakfast.

Mad River Barn

$ | 2849 Mill Brook Rd., Waitsfield, VT, 05673, USA

This former bunkhouse for the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s is now one of the Mad River Valley's chicest accommodations, thanks to extensive renovations in 2013 that transformed it into a rustic farmhouse with an edge of industrial. The on-site pub, restaurant—serving eclectic international dishes—and game room keeps the fun going through the evening.

Mahina Surf

$$$ | 4057 Lower Honoapiilani Hwy., HI, 96761, USA

Of the many condo complexes lining the ocean-side stretch of Honoapiilani Highway, this one offers friendly service, a saline oceanfront pool, and affordable units—some with million-dollar views. You won't be charged for parking or local phone calls, and most of the individually owned one- and two-bedroom units have been renovated to include flat-screen TVs and granite countertops in the kitchens. The interiors tend to be charming "old Hawaii" (lots of rattan furniture, silk flowers, and decorative items). This quiet older complex is a short stroll away from Honokowai's grocery store, beaches, and restaurants.

Pros

  • Oceanfront barbecues
  • Resident turtles hang out on the rocks below
  • No hidden fees

Cons

  • Rocky shoreline rather than a beach
  • No housekeeping (and cleaning fee for stays fewer than seven nights)
  • Minimum three-night stay
