Mansion on Sutter

$$$ | 1409 Sutter St., San Francisco, CA, 94109, USA

San Francisco doesn't get much more old-school elegant than this Lower Pac Heights Victorian mansion transformed into a luxurious, intimate lodging with spacious, individually decorated rooms. The building is known as the Payne House, having been built originally for the Payne family, which made its fortune from the mid-19th-century gold rush. Luckily, the amenities are far more sophisticated than those at a Gold Rush–era campsite, with deluxe Belisari Italian linens. Art lovers will appreciate the collection of paintings, a Murano Venetian glass chandelier, and haute design and furnishings in the public areas.

Pros

  • Luxury everywhere
  • The rare pet-friendly Victorian hotel
  • Exceptionally comfortable beds

Cons

  • Small gym
  • Inconvenient location
  • Subpar breakfast and fitness center

Many Glacier Hotel

$$ | Many Glacier Hotel, Glacier National Park, MT, USA

On Swiftcurrent Lake in the park's northeastern section, this is the most isolated of the grand hotels, and—especially if you are able to book a lake-view balcony room—among the most scenic. The rooms, partially renovated in recent years, are small and sparsely decorated, but the location and views are unbeatable. On chilly mornings, guests gather around the lobby's large fireplace. There are several wonderful hikes in this area, including ranger-guided ones to Grinnell Glacier and Iceberg Lake. You can combine the hikes with a scenic boat tour to substantially decrease the hiking distance.

Pros

  • Stunning views from lodge
  • Secluded
  • Good hiking trails nearby

Cons

  • Rustic rooms
  • No TV, limited Internet
  • The road leading to the lodge is very rough

Patrons of the opera, ballet, and theater will enjoy being just blocks from Seattle Center and Belltown. On-site spa and salon services offer a relaxing break for worn-out guests, while the speakeasy-themed Tin Lizzie Lounge downstairs is a great spot to meet fellow travelers. Note that while the historic building gives the place character, it also means it's not sealed off from street noise and that some of the rooms show their age.

Pros

  • In-room kitchens and living room areas
  • Free Wi-Fi
  • Central locations

Cons

  • Street-side rooms can be loud
  • Housekeeping not always consistent
  • No elevator

Marriott Baltimore Waterfront

$$ | 700 Aliceanna St., Baltimore, MD, 21202, USA

The city's tallest hotel and one of a handful directly on the Inner Harbor, this 32-story Marriott has a neoclassical interior that uses multihued marble, rich jewel-toned walls, and photographs of Baltimore architectural landmarks. Although it's at the eastern end of the Inner Harbor, all downtown attractions are within walking distance. Most rooms offer unobstructed views of the city and harbor; ask for one that faces west toward downtown for a splendid panorama of the waterfront and skyscrapers.

Pros

  • Newly renovated rooms
  • Great location and view
  • Water taxi stop right out front

Cons

  • Pricey compared to nearby hotels in the same category
  • Expensive valet parking
  • Staff can be rude
