Lodgecliffe on the Choptank

$$ | 103 Choptank Terr., Cambridge, MD, 21613-1115, USA

Located on a rise overlooking the river, this elegant turn-of-the-20th-century country home was the first bed-and-breakfast in the county (1986) and remains one of the most charming. Accommodations include the delightfully contemporary second-floor room called Sarah's Loft, named for the original innkeeper. Don't sleep through breakfast or you might miss cranberry French Toast made with sourdough bread, Chesapeake puff pancakes, or phyllo dough egg blossoms, freshly made and hot from the oven and often served out on the screened-in porch. Guests feel like personal guests of the innkeepers and their two young sons.

Pros

Loews Miami Beach Hotel

$$$$ | 1601 Collins Ave., FL, 33139, USA

This two-tower megahotel has 790 rooms with a soothing, sea-inspired motif, top-tier amenities, a massive spa, a great pool, and direct beachfront access, making it a great choice for families, businesspeople, groups, and pet lovers. When it was built in 1998, Loews managed not only to snag 99 feet of beach but also to take over the vacant St. Moritz next door and restore it to its original 1939 art deco beauty. The entire complex combines boutique charm with updated opulence. How big is it? The Loews has 85,000 square feet of meeting space and an enormous ocean-view grand ballroom. A three-story spa has 15 treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art fitness center. In the grand lobby you'll find a dozen black-suited staffers behind the counter and a half dozen other bellboys and valets. Loews New Orleans Hotel

$$$ | 300 Poydras St., New Orleans, LA, 70130, USA

One of the friendliest large hotels in the city, this property stands out with stellar service and bright, oversized rooms. The West Indies–style lobby, with a striking front-desk collage of black-and-white New Orleans scenes, is very welcoming. Soothing colors and Italian bed linens enrich the pleasant rooms, which are among the largest and most well appointed in the city. (There's even an umbrella in every room in case guests forget to pack one.) Since guest accommodations are located on floors 11–21, all have great views of downtown or the river. Grand King rooms include large bathtubs and separate glass-enclosed showers. This may look like a typical chain hotel on the outside, but its quality and consistency set it far apart. There is an on-site spa and pool.

Pros

  • Excellent restaurant and lounge
  • Large rooms with great amenities
  • Great views from all rooms

Cons

Logan Inn

$$ | 10 W. Ferry St., New Hope, PA, 18938, USA

Established in 1727, the Logan once accommodated passengers riding the ferry to Lambertville, and today the thoroughly modern inn has updated older rooms and a wing of rooms added in 2021, as well as expanded dining and drinking areas that appeal to today's upscale visitors. George Washington is said to have stayed here at least five times—it's hard to imagine what he would think of the people eating on the expansive patio and the shoppers who stroll past this inn smack-dab in the busiest part of town. The 22 newer rooms in the annex use pops of color and a mix of retro and modern accent pieces; the 16 rooms in the historic building are less expensive, generally a bit smaller, and more traditionally decorated. Some rooms have river views. Besides the Landmark Tavern, a large modern American restaurant with windows overlooking Main Street, the inn has a bar (Good + Plenty) and the plush, speakeasy-like Whiskey Lounge. Also part of the Logan Inn campus is the next-door Mansion Inn, in a renovated Victorian building, with eight rooms open only on weekends (at this writing) and Anzu Social (an Asian restaurant); a spa is scheduled to open in mid-2026.

Pros

  • In the heart of New Hope
  • New rooms are modern and stylish (and more expensive)
  • Alfresco patio dining is good for people-watching

Cons

  • No telephone in rooms
  • Interior modernization comes with some loss of historic charm
  • Restaurant can get quite noisy

The Logan Philadelphia, Curio Collection by Hilton

$$$ | 1 Logan Sq., Philadelphia, PA, 19103, USA

Part of Hilton's independent Curio Collection, the Logan provides a relaxing retreat with gracious, contemporary public areas and guest rooms that blend modern style with natural materials and local touches, such as impressive installations of Philly-inspired art in common areas. Standard guest rooms, decorated in shades of beige and brown, have plenty of amenities but may seem a little monochromatic. Before or after sightseeing on the Parkway or elsewhere, guests can unwind by the fire in the spacious Commons Lounge or in the rooftop Assembly lounge with its spectacular city views. The Underground Spa & Wellness offers sophisticated treatments, and the gym has a heated indoor pool. If you don't feel like the good but steak-heavy menu at the mostly locally sourced, modern-farmhouse-look Urban Farmer restaurant, other options are close at hand.

$$$$ | 1477 Queens Bay, Lake Havasu City, AZ, 86403, USA

If you want to be close to the bridge, this hotel is a dependable choice with plenty to see and do on site. Rooms aren't fancy, but they have new furniture, carpets, flat-screen TVs, and kitchen appliances. It's a considerable improvement over the previous and rather odd Tudor-meets-Southwest look.
