The Lindy Renaissance Charleston Hotel

$$$$ | 68 Wentworth St., Charleston, SC, 29401, USA

Marriott aimed for the feel of a boutique hotel with their renovation of this upscale stalwart in the heart of town. The welcoming lobby, furnished with a modern take on traditional decor, has an atmospheric fireplace to keep you toasty on cooler days. Vivian Howard has two restaurants here—the upscale Lenoir and Hot & Handy, a grab-and-go spot for coffee and delectable biscuits. Guests rave about the inviting rooftop pool and comfortable beds, but the downside is that many rooms offer views only of neighboring buildings.

The Line

$$ | 3515 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles, CA, 90010, USA

This boutique hotel pays homage to its Koreatown address with dynamic dining concepts and a hidden karaoke speakeasy. Designer Sean Knibb deconstructed the 12-story building to highlight the concrete, beams, and popcorn ceiling, only then to dress up the rooms in one-of-a-kind art—painted detergent bottles atop the desks, photographs of K-Town, and mismatched eclectic chairs. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame the cityscape from your bed (splurge to stay on a higher floor facing the Hollywood Hills). Upstairs restaurant OPENAIRE features California cuisine under a breathtaking greenhouse, while in the lobby Alfred Coffee caffeinates guests with steaming hot lattes. The Lobby Bar is the perfect post-work hangout with creative cocktails and snacks, while in the back of the hotel, locals are lured in by the Houston Brothers' ’80s-themed bar with arcade games and karaoke rooms. There's also Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, a deco-disco with a speakeasy ATM machine entrance. The outdoor pool is another great hotel escape.

Pros

  • Room service by Michelin chef Josiah Citrin
  • Unique decor
  • Fun bars on-site (ask about the speakeasy)

Cons

  • Valet parking $54/night
  • Lobby bar crowds public spaces
  • Hotel is a bit isolated from common tourist attractions

Lodge at Vail

$$$$ | 174 E. Gore Creek Dr., Vail, CO, 81657, USA

One of the first hotels to open in Vail, in 1962, the sprawling lodge is popular with skiers and families because of its fabulous location only 150 feet from the village's main lift, the Gondola One. Ski valets ready your skis every morning and collect your gear for drying in the evening. The quality and size of the rooms varies tremendously: smaller, individually decorated rooms feature a homey feel, while larger suites have modern touches like heated marble floors in the bathrooms and fireplaces. Two hot tubs, fire pits, and a pool with an outdoor bar and kitchen are perfect for relaxing after a day on the mountain.

Pros

  • Located near main ski lift
  • Popular steak house, Elway's, on-site
  • Great spa

Cons

  • Air-conditioning can be iffy
  • Quality of rooms varies
  • Some rooms are small and outdated
