Casa del Gavilan

$ | Cimarron, NM, 87740, USA Fodor's Choice

On the Santa Fe Trail and directly below the Tooth of Time, this 1912 white adobe compound (the name means "House of the Hawk") on 225 acres is a romantic hideaway of the first order. The original owner, industrialist J.J. Nairn, used to entertain artists and other creative types here, and writer Zane Grey wrote Knights of the Range while he was holed up here. The rooms in the main house are furnished with Southwestern antiques and artworks by the likes of Frederick Remington and Charles Stewart, and the 12-foot ceilings with huge pine vigas (support beams) lend an airy feel to the massive adobe walls. A two-bedroom suite in the adjacent guest cottage is ideal for families or friends traveling together. Tasty breakfasts should be taken on the patio when the weather permits. During the winter months, dinner can be arranged for guests with advanced notice.

Pros

  • Magnificent architecture
  • Large rooms
  • Breathtaking natural surroundings

About a 100-minute drive away from the center of Manhattan is this cottage-chic property sprawled across 500 acres of trees, water, and sunshine, where you can expect peaceful cabin-style accommodations equipped with ultra-comfy mattresses, chef-cooked meals, and discreet members of the concierge that make everything smooth-sailing. Breakfasts and dinners are served at the pavilion, which is romantically furnished with rattan chairs and lit with long, flickering candles. Nature is abundant and accessible: An easy 1.8-mile trail loops adjacent to the estate, which provides an opportunity for a brisk foray into the surrounding woods. The tranquil lake opens up during the warmer months for boat rides, fishing, and even cold plunges. Cimarron Rose Bed & Breakfast

$$ | 689 Oso Ridge Rte. (NM 53), 87020, USA Fodor's Choice

Rustic Southwestern comfort is the specialty of the house at this B&B on 20 ponderosa-pine-laden acres. Proprietor Sheri McWethy has created a "green" inn, with natural-fiber sheets, no perfumes or dyes in the cleaning products, absolutely no smoking allowed in rooms or anywhere on-site, and a conscientious approach to water use. But Cimarron is lush with amenities and atmosphere, from the discreet private patios and paths winding around the inspired gardens to the detail that makes each suite distinctive and cozy—this is a place you could hole up in and spend your days just wandering the grounds or hiking the nearby trails, or simply dipping into the B&B's library. Full breakfasts are delivered to your door each morning—banana-blue-corn pancakes (with real maple syrup) and Mexican hot chocolate are favorites—and special dietary requests are accommodated with notice. Day packs and picnic baskets are supplied for those wanting to explore the area. Reservations are required.

Pros

  • Each accommodation is a suite (including a complete kitchen) with private entry, and a private patio
  • Daily rates decrease for stays over two nights

Cons

  • Guests heat up their precooked breakfasts in their rooms
  • Not all pets allowed and an extra fee is charged if accepted

Circa Resort & Casino

$ | 8 Fremont St., Las Vegas, NV, 89101, USA Fodor's Choice

Downtown's newest big hoo-hah comes from Downtown's newest big pooh-bahs—the brothers Stevens, owners Derek and Greg—and provided a major boost to the Vegas aesthetic when it opened in 2020; it's also the first Downtown hotel built from the ground up since the 1980s. Since Vegas is all about superlatives, Circa is the latest raise in the Vegas hotel poker game, offering 777 rooms in its hotel tower; a two-story casino; a three-story sports book; six bar/lounges; five restaurants; a \"stadium-style\" six-tier pool, including swim-up bars and a 135-foot-high screen for televised sports events; and a \"Garage Mahal\" parking structure. The only thing not allowed here (besides kids) is the modest old expression, \"Less is More.\"

Pros

  • World's biggest sports book
  • A pool "amphitheater" that defies the imagination
  • The cachet of being Las Vegas's latest hot spot

Cons

  • You haven't experienced noise until you've heard it in here
  • Long lines to show driver's license for proof of age for admittance (including some guests who could have flashed an AARP card instead)
  • No bedside plugs to charge phones in rooms

citizenM New York Bowery Hotel

$$ | 189 Bowery, New York, NY, 10002, USA Fodor's Choice

Rising 21 floors into the sky, the citizenM makes an outsized statement that starts at ground level, with the fabulous lobby “living room,” and reaches all the way to its rooftop bar and terrace. The living room has desk space for working, counter and bar space for dining, and couch space for lounging. Upstairs, the chicly minimal guest rooms are all identical: small but with XL king-size beds and huge windows—in fact, they were all prefabricated in Poland and shipped to the United States by boat to keep construction prices down.

Pros

  • Affordable stylish spot
  • Especially appealing for solo travelers
  • Enthusiastic service

Cons

  • Quite small rooms
  • No upgrades, all rooms are the same
  • IPad-controlled room features can be frustrating

citizenM New York Times Square Hotel

$$ | 218 W. 50th St., New York, NY, 10019, USA Fodor's Choice

Part of a modern European chain, citizenM prizes a more eclectic, youthful style that puts technology and art at the forefront. Expect self-serve check-in, cashless dining and snackbar, free Wi-Fi, and an in-room iPad to control everything from lights and blinds, to climate and TV channels (with mixed results). Rooms are tight and have one king bed only, but the prime location just north of Times Square may be worth it, especially for solo travelers or shorter stays. The lobby is designed like a living room with comfy seating, which extends to the hotel highlight: the 22nd-floor cloudM rooftop bar, featuring a wraparound open-air terrace. Bonus: the 21st-floor gym also has awesome skyline views.

Pros

  • Cool indoor-outdoor rooftop bar
  • Rooms are surprisingly quiet for Midtown
  • 21st-floor gym has great views

Cons

  • All rooms are for two people max only
  • High-traffic area
  • IPad room controls can be hard to navigate
