The Beach Club at Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina

$$$$ | 20 Patriots Point Rd., Charleston, SC, 29464, USA Fodor's Choice

Mount Pleasant's finest hotel sits on Charleston Harbor, so you can gaze at the city's skyline with your feet on this resort's sandy beach or from the waterfront pool. The Beach Club's spacious rooms all sport oversized balconies overlooking the pool and harbor. Grounds include a bocce court, life-size chessboard, and a private movie theater. The resort's original hotel, the adjacent Harborside, shares the grounds and includes an additional 125 rooms and the Estuary Spa. A lot goes on here, from splashy boat shows at the marina and wedding celebrations to summertime concerts on Friday evenings. Children can jump into the mini-mariners' program, and parents can learn to navigate a sailboat. A number of annual sailing events are held here, and the bar scene at the three on-site restaurants is fun. Get here via a 10-minute ride on the Charleston Water Taxi (bikes are welcome) or on a trolley that runs to the Market area.

Pros

  • Easy access to downtown but offers an away-from-it-all vibe
  • Large pool and extensive grounds are perfect for enjoying a sunset glass of wine
  • On-site gym

Dotted with coral lounge chairs, umbrellas, and white-sand beaches, this contemporary resort looks as if it were carefully replicated from a retro-chic postcard. An annex of the larger Mediterranean-style The Boca Raton (but set on the downy sands rather than the Intracoastal Waterway), the casually elegant property has 210 rooms, ranging from 420-square-foot standards to 800-square-foot one-bedroom suites overlooking the Atlantic. The rooms and suites showcase a spectacular design featuring honed marble and cerused woods complemented by vibrant coral velvet accents. Each room features a wet bar complete with a water filtration system so you can refill your water bottle for on-the-go hydration, flat-panel TVs, plush bedding, Acqua di Parma bath products, complimentary beach bags and flip-flops, and—most important—easy access to the sand and sea. Guests can lounge by a trio of revamped swimming pools with cabanas and a bar, or linger with a cocktail and leisurely lunch in the on-site Marisol, or you can consult your personal concierge for suggestions. For a change of scenery, head back to the main complex of The Boca Raton (just a short ride away via free shuttle or water taxi) for other dining options, including the trendy Sadelle's.

Black Bear Lodge

$$$ | 1202 Ski Run Blvd., South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150, USA Fodor's Choice

Built in the 1990s with meticulous attention to detail, the original section of this 2-acre complex feels like an Adirondack resort, with lodge rooms and highly recommended kitchenette-equipped cabins with fine art, fireplaces, and 19th-century American antiques. The great room has rough-hewn beams, plank floors, cathedral ceilings, Persian rugs, and even an elk's head over the giant river-rock fireplace. In 2022, the owners purchased the neighboring former motel and renamed it the Rubicon Building. Though upgraded with a nod to the lodge accommodations and cabins, the building's rooms and suites aren't quite as appealing.

Pros

  • Near Heavenly skiing
  • Within walking distance of good restaurants
  • Wine and beer bar

Cons

  • Not staffed 24/7
  • Lacks big-hotel amenities
  • Though upgraded with a nod to rusticity, Rubicon Building quarters aren't quite as appealing

Black Dolphin Inn

$$ | 916 S. Riverside Dr., New Smyrna Beach, FL, 32168, USA Fodor's Choice

On a quaint residential street, this Spanish-style, three-story inn combines the charm and hospitality of a B&B with modern sensibilities and a chic, coastal-casual vibe. It has a legion of devotees—including the dolphins that entertain guests, almost like clockwork, in the Intracoastal Waterway across the street. Where the wow factor is concerned, though, credit the inn, not the marine life. Each of the 14 rooms (four are suites) is unique and meticulously adorned with vintage furniture, stylish accents, and modern touches such as wine chillers, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, and jetted spa tubs framed with iridescent mosaic tile. The downstairs gathering area has an open kitchen, where the chef prepares her acclaimed churro French toast and various other sweet, savory, or (if you must) healthy delights.

Pros

  • Hospitable staff
  • River views
  • Comfy beds

Cons

  • No pool
  • Must drive to the beach
  • Occasional noise in lower-floor rooms

Blackstone Hotsprings Lodging & Baths

$ | 410 Austin St., Truth or Consequences, NM, 87901, USA Fodor's Choice

Unassuming from the outside, Blackstone has such a creative personality that visitors need simply turn the corner into the colorful midcentury-style courtyard—which echoes Blackstone's origins at a 1930s motor court—to be won over. With just the right dose of quirkiness, the very well-appointed accommodations reveal the owners' good humor: a tasteful assortment of Jetsons, Lucille Ball, and Twilight Zone memorabilia adorn the themed rooms. Each has its own private soaking tub for unlimited indulgence in the healing waters, and a kitchenette (no stove). The lush wet room ($25 per hour)—with plants, waterfalls, a shower, and hot pool—transports you somewhere far away from this desert locale. Two huge private tubs are available for $5 per half hour. The in-house coffee is a custom blend and it's fantastic. The staff is helpful and can offer savvy tips on local dining and sightseeing.

Pros

  • Irresistible blend of handcrafted design and pure luxury
  • A truly relaxing getaway

Blair Hill Inn & Restaurant

$$$$ | 351 Lily Bay Rd., Greenville, ME, 04441, USA Fodor's Choice

Beautiful gardens, a landmark fieldstone wall, and a hilltop location with marvelous views over Moosehead Lake distinguish this 1891 country estate, one of New England's top inns, with spacious rooms and baths (many have oversize tubs and showers) and Slate, a fine dining restaurant (dinner only). Guest rooms and suites have sitting areas, fine furnishings, antiques, and plush bedding; all but one of the ten accommodations have lake views and a king bed, five have fireplaces, and two have a private porch or patio. The menu at the prix fixe restaurant incorporates produce and herbs from the gardens and foods from local farms. Awaiting guests on the inn's 79 acres are hiking trails, a trout pond, picnic and sitting areas, and a hot tub tucked in the woods.

  • Two two-room suites are nice for families or those traveling with a companion
  • Amenities range from snacks and hiking guides to a fitness center and concierge service
