Crater Lake Lodge

$$$ | 1 Lodge Loop Rd., OR, 97604, USA Fodor's Choice

The period feel of this 1915 lodge on the caldera's rim is reflected in its lodgepole-pine columns, gleaming wood floors, and stone fireplaces in the common areas, and the simple guest rooms. With magnificent lake views—and the all-too-brief tourist season at Crater Lake—rooms at this popular spot are often booked a year in advance, although cancellations sometimes create last-minute vacancies. Plan ahead, as this is the only "in-park" place to stay by the lake, but also check online reservations page if visiting on short notice, as you may just get lucky.

  • Exudes rustic charm
  • Lovely common areas

The Crawford Hotel

$$$$ | 1701 Wynkoop St., Denver, CO, 80202, USA Fodor's Choice

The lobby here—which guests can view from each floor—is the impressively renovated Union Station, a retro delight of desks with chain-pull lamps, long wooden benches, and constant bustle; the nostalgic sense of being on a train journey is carried elegantly into the 112 rooms, each of which offers a unique layout and design. The Pullman rooms on the train-track side are fully soundproofed and decorated with mahogany and train-themed art; other rooms might feature exposed beams, oversized windows for views of LoDo, or lofted ceilings. In-room iPads for easy navigation around the hotel and town, soft leather upholstery, and beige and white linens and accents are hallmarks of all rooms. With 12 bars and restaurants, there's something for everyone: Snooze and Pigtrain Coffee Company for breakfast; ACME Delicatessen or Wafels & Dinges for a fast lunch or quick dinner; modern American at Mercantile Dining and Provisions and ND streetBAR; fresh seafood at Stoic & Genuine; small plates at Ultreia; and Milkbox Ice Creamery for dessert. There are also a couple of lounges, including the casual ground-floor Terminal Bar and the retro Cooper Lounge on the top floor, with its views straight up 17th Street and vintage suitcases as decor touches.

Pros

  • Centralized location
  • Never have to leave Union Station
  • Large choice of excellent restaurants

Cons

  • On the pricey side

Crown Motel

$ | 8200 N. Lake Blvd., Kings Beach, CA, 96143, USA Fodor's Choice

For years a lakeside favorite of travelers willing to trade style and amenities for below-average rates—and impressive water views from some rooms—the Crown is emerging from a property makeover with a sportier look but still budget-friendly pricing. Standard rooms, their decor remaining more serviceable than flashy, all have coffeemakers, small refrigerators, microwaves, and flat-screen TVs; some only sleep two people, others up to four. Deluxe, premium, and lakefront rooms have progressively better amenities that might include kitchenettes, air-conditioning, fireplaces, or all of these. Many rooms are just steps from the private beach. The hot tub and pool, the latter so close to the lake you'll practically feel in it, are both heated. A fire pit warms things up when the lake chills down, and there's an area for cornhole and other games. Water-sports rentals are available on-site.

Pros

  • Family-friendly
  • An especially good value off-season
  • Lakefront pool and beach

Cons

  • Lake-view rooms the costliest
  • Pool only open seasonally (hot tub year-round)
  • Thin walls

Dawn Ranch

$$ | 16467 Hwy. 116, Guerneville, CA, 95446, USA Fodor's Choice

A woodsy 22-acre property positioned as a deluxe, reconnect-with-nature variation on mid-century roadside resorts, Dawn Ranch provides accommodations ranging from one-room, cedar-shingled cabins and larger "chalets" with sitting areas to cottages and a bungalow. High-quality beds, linens, and bath products signal the upscale intent, but the minimal decor and the rooms’ lack of TVs place the emphasis on unplugging and unwinding. The resort helps guests achieve this goal with grounds containing meadows, a fruit orchard, a culinary garden, and a path through redwoods, oaks, and sycamores leading down to a Russian River dock. The sandy Johnson’s Beach is a short walk away. On-site activities include yoga and meditation sessions and occasional live music on the patio below The Lodge at Dawn Ranch restaurant, whose cuisine draws inspiration from California, South America, and Europe. Several “glamping” tents are set up in the orchard from late spring to early fall.

Pros

  • High-quality beds, linens, and bath products
  • The Lodge for cuisine inspired by California, South America, and Europe
  • Emphasis on unplugging and unwinding

Cons

  • Minimum-stay requirement some weekends
  • Some rooms are across the highway from the office, restaurant, and meadows

Deep Canyon Guest Ranch

$$$$ | 2055 Teton Canyon Rd., Choteau, MT, 59422, USA Fodor's Choice

A snug haven in a rugged landscape, this 1,200-acre ranch is surrounded by pines and aspens deep in Teton Canyon, an eastern gateway to the Bob Marshall Wilderness. The duplex cabins feel like a second home, with comfortable furniture, wood-paneled ceilings, rough-hewn wainscoting, and picture windows. Enveloping sofas and chairs, a large stone fireplace, and more golden wood fill the main lodge. The 3,600-square-foot log home has three suites, each with room for four or more people, making it ideal for larger groups. Three meals daily (included in the room rate) are served family-style, and the food is memorable: a sausage-egg-and-cheese bake with homemade muffins for breakfast, grilled lemon-glazed salmon for dinner, and pies just out of the oven. They'll fortify you for a day of hiking, wildlife viewing, or guided horseback riding (also included in the room rate). In summer multi-day pack trips into the Bob Marshall give riders a glimpse of the Rockies as Lewis and Clark saw them.

Pros

  • True Montana experience
  • Clean, rustic wood cabins
  • Longtime Montana natives as hosts

Cons

  • Nearest airport is 1½ hours away
  • No cell-phone service

Desolation Hotel Lake Tahoe

$$$ | 933 Poplar St., South Lake Tahoe, CA, 96150, USA Fodor's Choice

Hoteliers who revere nature and luxury in equal proportions conceived this gaspworthy, glass-walled, world-unto-itself "micro-resort" that debuted in 2022 a few-minutes' walk to a private-access beach and an even shorter one to Stateline's casinos. Devil's Thumb Ranch

$$$$ | 3530 County Rd. 83, Winter Park, CO, 80478, USA Fodor's Choice

Many visitors come to this 6,500-acre ranch outside Winter Park for unrivaled cross-country skiing, with 75 miles of groomed trails, but they wind up staying for the resort's comfort and privacy. Choose from a room or suite in the lodge built in 2008, the former lodge that's now a reasonably priced bunkhouse, or a cabin in the woods. The pet-friendly cabins range in size from 675 to 2,200 square feet, but all have wood-burning fireplaces and furnishings that reflect the resort's ranching history. In the loft cabins the beds are upstairs and bathrooms downstairs. In the lodge, upscale, Western-style rooms have some paneled walls (from lumber harvested at the ranch), pine furniture, and beds covered with colorful quilts. Some rooms have stone fireplaces. From tapping the power of geothermal springs to using trees cleared on the property to build part of the new lodge to the on-site Ranch House restaurant ($$$) that uses sustainable and organic ingredients, this resort lives green. Take in a yoga class at the full-service spa or work with cattle on a horseback ride, fly-fish, mountain-bike, and hike in the surrounding area. Hallowed Grounds coffee shop offers pastries and other quick breakfast items, and the rustic Heck's Tavern features three meals a day as well.

Maritana Grille is the hotel's deservedly popular restaurant, which specializes in Florida seafood and is lined with huge fish tanks. Ghost hunters may be interested in knowing that Thomas Rowe, who built this Roaring '20s–era hotel, is said to have come back after death to meet his beloved; some guests and staff swear they see the couple occasionally having a rendezvous in the garden (more romantic than spooky); others say Rowe appears in corridors and rooms.

Pros

  • Romantic destination
  • Great beach with cabanas and paddleboards available
  • Tasty dining options, namely popular Maritana

Cons

  • Small rooms
  • Can be quite pricey
  • $38 daily resort fee adds to already-hefty tab
