FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

East Austin’s landmark, ARRIVE, is a masonry structure shaped as a giant piece of abstract art. The 2019 build has an industrial bohemian aesthetic and features 83 guest rooms, a Spanish restaurant, and a patio bar. The boutique hipster hotel fits in nicely on this trendy nightlife stretch of East Sixth Street. Guests can access some of the most sought-after bars and restaurants in town by foot, bike, or car. (Safe street parking can be scarce, however). The on-site Lefty's Brick Bar is a casual neighborhood bar and courtyard restaurant, and there's also a spacious rooftop patio. The staff is friendly and eager to help a younger-skewing clientele who don't mind the sparse amenities.

MGM Resorts International

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The Bellagio has become a symbol of Las Vegas both locally and around the world. The “dancing” Fountains of Bellagio in front of the hotel are synonymous with Vegas grandeur, and they now serve as the backdrop for the awards ceremonies of major sporting events including Formula One. The circa-1998 hotel replicates a mansion on Lake Como, and attractions such as the (free) Conservatory & Botanical Gardens are exquisite. A total of 3,933 rooms are spread across two towers. These accommodations remain among the swankiest on the entire Las Vegas Strip.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This ornate and lavish hotspot opened in 1966, making it one of the oldest remaining resorts on the Las Vegas Strip. Since then, the property has undergone several modernizations, and a star turn in movies such as “The Hangover.” Today, each guest’s Caesars Palace experience depends on which of the six towers in which they’re staying; newer accommodations such as the Agustus Tower and the Nobu Hotel are the fanciest, while the circa-1966 Julius Tower has kitsch appeal. Despite its size (3,980 rooms in all), Caesars still has an air of sophistication and service. Consider these high roller vibes.

Chicago Athletic Association

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

This hotel is part of the Hyatt family (in its Unbound Collection) yet it’s very boutique-y, which is the essence of the hotel chain’s upscale brand-within-a-brand. As the former Chicago Athletic Association (operated from 1893-2007 and designed to emulate Doge’s Palace in Venice, Italy), the hotel still gets calls asking about “gym hours” but most locals know this is a cool spot to hang even if you aren’t an overnight guest. You just might be lifting cocktails at Cindy’s Rooftop—not weights in the fitness center.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

The lobby and other social spaces (including the hotel's gorgeous The George restaurant) of this sophisticated 1920s icon meld Old World glamour with modern luxury to stylishly complement contemporary guest rooms that feature mid-century-inspired furnishings and all-marble bathrooms with rain showers and designer toiletries. The rooms are airy and inviting, with a gray-and-tourmaline palette, chic furniture, and luxurious bedding. Kids get perks like child-size bathrobes. The well-heeled leisure or business traveler will find everything they need here: afternoon tea at the ornate Georgian with its stunning Palladian windows; fabulous seafood and impeccable service at Shuckers, one of Seattle's oldest oyster bars; a fitness center with an indoor pool; a full-service business center; a day spa; and a shopping arcade. The café, 4th Ave, is the hotel's answer to Starbucks, opening early with espressos and savory bites.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Miami Beach has landed on the Las Vegas Strip with this new resort hotel, which at 67 stories is the tallest inhabited building in the state. Along with its neighbor, Resorts World (which opened in 2021), the blue behemoth has brought action and excitement to a part of town that had suffered from a couple of moribund decades. Rooms and suites are subtly decorated (here the blues are soft) and clock in at 488 to 660 square feet, with floor-to-ceiling windows and such amenities as spa-style robe and slippers and personal cooling drawers (although refrigerators are available). Suites, which run from 896 to 937 square feet, have comfortable seating areas, soaking tubs or walk-in showers, and a doorbell and service-request system; the most lavish suites, Fleur de Lys Suites, have a VIP lounge check-in, butler service, and custom Italian linens and are as large as 3,497 square feet. The six-acre Oasis Pool Deck, with six pools, is seasonal.

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

From its jaw-dropping bay views to the fabulous location just steps from Pike Place Market, this is a unique place you'll want to visit again and again; excellent service and dining options make it even more worth the splurge. The inn is well-known for the friendly, helpful staff and excellent room service from Bacco (breakfast) and French charmer Café Campagne (dinner). The contemporary rooms feature a soothing white-and-beige palette, stylish furniture, and incredibly comfortable Hypnos beds. Foodies, romantics, and everyone in between will love the prime location. Rooms are differentiated by the type of view, but if you opt for a City Side room (a good deal even in high season), you can still enjoy uninterrupted water views from the spacious fifth-floor deck perched above Puget Sound. Across the courtyard, you'll find the superb Sushi Kashiba, helmed by renowned chef Shiro Kashiba, who trained under chef Jiro Ono (the subject of the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi); it's a splurge but arguably the best sushi in Seattle.

Within Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s last building design, this black, boxy skyscraper spans 52 stories and sits along the Chicago River in River North. As one of only three Langham hotels in the U.S. (others are in Boston, New York City, and Pasadena, California), the lone Midwestern outpost from the Hong Kong luxury brand checks off all the boxes, including lavish spa treatments and dining with a view. Tranquility and luxury with a low carbon footprint are among the goals of this ultragreen wood, steel, and glass resortlike property in downtown Yountville, but there's nothing spartan about the lodgings, arranged around four landscaped courtyards. Spacious rooms with private patios or balconies have high-thread-count organic bedding, gas fireplaces, and bathrooms large enough to accommodate the in-room spa treatments Bardessono is known for. About half the rooms come equipped with combination showers/steam rooms, outdoor showers, or both. High-tech touches include virtual-surround speaker systems. At the hotel's restaurant, Lucy, the chef uses mostly local ingredients, some grown in the hotel's garden, to craft the menu.

Pros

  • Rooftop lap pool with mountain views
  • In-room spa treatments
  • Three luxury villas for extra privacy

Cons

  • Expensive year-round
  • Limited view from some rooms
  • A bit of street traffic on hotel's west side

The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel, Upper East Side
The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

On the well-heeled corner of Madison Avenue and 76th Street, the Carlyle fuses elegance with Manhattan swank, and calls for the aplomb of entering a Chanel boutique: walk in chin high, ready to impress (and be impressed). Everything about this Upper East Side landmark suggests cultivated refinement: some rooms remain decorated with fine antique furniture, while many of the accommodations underwent an update in 2021. Its famed black and white marble lobby remains, and dining and entertainment options captivate guests, especially when cabaret luminaries hold court at the Café Carlyle. Bemelmans Bar is one of the great old-school local cocktail spots; and Dowling's at Carlyle, opened in fall 2021, can give the brunch crowd something to chew on with a decadent menu. For pampering, the Valmont Spa and/or Yves Durif Salon can buff, polish, and glow you up for a fancy night out. If you want the fragrance of timeless uptown elegance to go; look for Brooklyn-based perfumer, D.S. & Durga's The Carlyle, a scent created for the hotel's guests.

Pros

  • Option of classic or contemporary decor in room
  • Convenient to chic boutiques
  • Several great dining and bar options

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Once a home for widows, this 1700s-era mansion has been remodeled into a 50-room boutique hotel, one of the city's only boutique options with a pool. Rooms are designed with a Mediterranean feel, and amenities include a small gym and sauna, an attentive staff, and breakfast served next to the pool. There's also a cocktail bar and restaurant on-site, both of which are good.

Pros

Bann at Oak Knoll Napa

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Every room has a vineyard view at this self-described resort-style bed-and-breakfast whose glittering fusion of Thai luxury and Wine Country chic distinguishes it from its Napa Valley peers. Best known for Osha Thai on San Francisco's Embarcadero and that restaurant's local outpost, chef Lalita Souksamlane expands guests' horizons with sumptuously decorated rooms and suites (466–738 square feet), each based on a different region of her native land. Expect plush bedding, spacious showers, stand-alone tubs, and all the western technical mod cons. The hot tub and outdoor saltwater pool share the same vineyard views as the rooms, and there's a sauna. Phenomenal three-course breakfasts begin with seasonal local fruit, followed by croissants and various breads and a pan-Pacific main event that might include Thai eggs, shrimp congee, chicken pho, waffles, and pancakes.

Pros

  • Considerate staff
  • Phenomenal three-course breakfasts
  • Individually decorated rooms on Thai themes

Cons

  • Social butterflies may find pace too relaxed
  • Late checkout costly
  • Extra fee for children

A Philadelphia institution for almost a century, The Bellevue reopened in late 2024 after a full renovation offering elegant lodging and spacious rooms at the very heart of the city. The rooms, done in dark neutrals with a modern twist, have large walk-in closets and high ceilings and moldings typical of older buildings; suites juggle the building's beaux-arts heritage with contemporary touches. Hotel guests also have access to The Sporting Club at the Bellevue, a gigantic gym with an indoor track, tons of workout classes, plus a huge lifting room with tons of equipment.
