Early birds can take advantage of the "surf break" menu, and there's a very popular weekend brunch (book in advance). Regulars perch at the bar, and in the dining room, local families, couples, and tourists feast amid the dark, cork-lined walls while admiring the lovely marina.

Mala Ocean Tavern

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

The menu at this oceanfront standout features interesting local-style Hawaiian food fusions. There's a focus on ingredients that promote local sustainability, and the cocktail and wine lists are great, too. Daily brunch and happy hours keep guests happy all day, and a late-night menu on Friday and Saturday features raw fish and Wagyu plus discounted cocktails.

Mama's Fish House

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

Few restaurants in Maui have the reputation of this North Shore eatery, tucked into a small cove just off tthe Road to Hana. You’ll pay for the quality of your meal, but it’s worth the splurge—the fish comes from as close as Maui’s shores to as far away as the deep waters of Antarctica, and the daily menu often tells the story of that catch. This is the place that you must make reservations far in advance (as far out as 12 months), as it's the bucket-list restaurant for most visitors; lunch reservations are a bit more attainable.

Manta at the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

Perched on the edge of a bluff overlooking the sparkling waters of Kaunaoa Beach, the resort's flagship restaurant is a compelling spot for a romantic meal at sunset, especially at one of the outside tables. The culinary team's take on Hawaii Regional Cuisine highlights locally sourced, sustainable fish, chicken, and beef. The grilled chicken, for example, comes from the Kau district of the Big Island, while the Kona kampachi is raised on the coast. The Kona abalone is also specially farmed at the Keahole Point NELHA deep cold seawater facility.

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

This open-air restaurant at the Westin Hapuna Beach Resort has high ceilings and a lanai that overlooks the pool and the sandy-white shores of gorgeous Hapuna Beach. The focus is on the freshest seafood, and the small-plate appetizers and main course options also showcase a bounty of Big Island ingredients infused with Mediterranean influences. Try the seared scallops with garden ulu gnocchi. Other highlights are a charcuterie and crudo bar and an artisan bread nook. Arrive early for the best table—lines begin forming before the 5:30 pm seating time.

Mina's Fish House

$$$$ Fodor's Choice

Chef Michael Mina, a James Beard Award winner, designed an exceptional line-to-table menu that celebrates the local catch in a space with panoramic views from indoor and lanai oceanfront tables. This might be the only restaurant in Hawaii (or the world) to have an on-site “fish sommelier,” who guides you through the array of cooking techniques, flavorings, and portions—from fillet to whole fish—and helps you choose the best matches for your palate. The raw bar is excellent, too. Validate your ticket for free valet parking during your meal.
