There's almost no combination on Earth as satisfying as pizza and beer—which just happen to be Blind Lady's specialties. The old world-style pizzas are topped with organic ingredients, like homemade chorizo and avocado, which offer an excellent complement to their extensive beer selection, which is updated on their chalkboard daily. Just be patient waiting for a seat at the popular neighborhood spot, which is decorated with upcycled materials such as reclaimed wood floors and glass cases of vintage beer cans.

A golden-domed pizza oven, named Sofia after the owner’s daughter, delivers authentic Neapolitan-style pizza to fans who often line up for patio tables at this kid-friendly Italian restaurant in South Park. Pizzas make a meal or can be shared, but don’t miss the equally delicious appetizers, heaping salads, or fresh pastas, and be sure to save room for some dolci.

This café lives up to its name, which explains why there's often a line, despite the ample seating. Paris-trained Karen Krasne turns out award-winning cakes, tortes, and pastries of exceptional beauty, while the open-air patio invites you to linger over yet another coffee drink. There's another location in Little Italy. 

Sister company to next door neighbor Pop Pie, Stella Jeans scoops seasonal and signature flavors inspired by flavors from around the world, like mango sticky rice, ube and pandesal toffee, and Madagascar vanilla. It's a little pricier than the average ice cream shop, but even "standard" flavors like double chocolate and brown butter pecan are made with premium ingredients for exceptional flavor.

Seafood lovers have long flocked to Puerto Nuevo, the “lobster village” just south of San Diego in Baja California, Mexico. When a family that operates several Puerto Nuevo restaurants opened Ortega's in Hillcrest, it quickly became a top draw for authentic Baja coastal cuisine, minus the long lines to cross the border.

Bahn Thai has been a local's favorite since 2011, thanks to their reasonably priced and consistently tasty Thai favorites like different noodles, stir frys, curries, and soups. Due to very limited seating, takeout is best.

San Diego’s love affair with artisanal bread began when Charles Kaufman, a former New Yorker and a filmmaker, opened this artsy urban bakery and café over 30 years ago. Ovens imported from France produce irresistible aromas as you choose among classic baguettes and focaccia, delicious assorted pastries and Vienoisserie, and a wide selection of breakfast and lunch specialties.

This long-standing North Park coffee roaster and café expands its evening offerings to include local beer, wine, and Italian-style cocktails.

The exterior of Communal Coffee reads "Coffee + Flowers," and though that's not the name of the café, it's also not inaccurate—you actually can pick up a bouquet while you're there. But while there's plenty to keep patrons occupied—including a curated selection of housewares, books, and chocolates—the main attraction is still the fresh-brewed coffee and flaky, buttery pastries.

There are six spots across San Diego, including this one on the corner of Juniper and Fern in the heart of South Park. Open daily, this is the place to come for coffee, hot or iced, and a special treat—a scoop of one of the innovative flavors from Mutual Friend Ice Cream like haole pie with Oreo and macadamia nuts, or gluten-free coffee made with Dark Horse cold brew.

For street food with style, pop into Falafel Heights for a made-from-scratch falafel wrap or chicken shawarma bowl, made Palestinian-style for easy snacking. Be sure to get a few dips on the side for an extra kick.

A youthful crowd gathers here for authentic Italian ice cream, espresso, and a second-floor view of the Downtown skyline. The line moves quickly, and the best seats are outside to watch planes fly overhead into the nearby San Diego International Airport.

Too early to grab a pint of Harland beer? Just head to their café counter that's open daily from 7 am to 3 pm for a fresh pastry and espresso instead. The pet- and kid-friendly patio is a great place to sit with a laptop or with friends, and if you stick around, it'll be beer-o'clock in no time.

For a low-key vibes and high-quality coffee service with a punk rock edge, head to Heartwork Coffee. The sidewalk service window slings a full espresso menu, plus teas, cocoa, and plenty of pastries that are often vegan and/or gluten-friendly.

The thick burgers taste as good as the beer brewed on-site at this New Zealand-inspired brewpub. Plenty of IPAs are available year-round, along with rotating options like pilsners, stouts, sours, and other easy-drinking beers that pair beautifully with the large menu of creative comfort foods like mushroom bulgogi fries, smoked chicken wings (colloquially called "chook" wings across Oceania), and fish-and-chips. Head upstairs to enjoy the sunny rooftop patio with plenty of seating, or catch a game on the large TVs behind the bar on the ground floor. 

Don't miss this local gem serving up delicious ceviches, seafood cocktails, and famous fish tacos, available grilled or fried Baja-style. Place your order at the small walk-up window along India Street, then grab one of the (limited) seats along the adjacent outdoor terrace.

Ornate pink wallpaper and marble-topped tables stand among skull prints, Gothic art, a heavy metal soundtrack and a giant ram's head in this busy restaurant-bar—emphasis on the bar. The vegan menu is not what you might expect, and the bold flavors and satisfying portions will please both herbivores and carnivores alike.

 Expect a great selection of baked goods and an unpretentious atmosphere at Lestat's three locations: Normal Heights (open 6:30 am to 11 pm), Hillcrest (open 8 am to midnight), and University Heights (open 24/7). The Normal Heights location is adjacent to Lestat's West, a music venue offering live music, comedy shows, and open mic nights.

Named for a form of Mexican wrestling, this taco shop with its hot-pink walls and shiny booths was famous mostly for its lack of parking until it appeared on the Travel Channel’s “Man v Food" in 2010. The lines of burrito-crazed fans have calmed down somewhat since then, but the spicy salsa muerta is as hot as ever.

Don’t park in the gas station next door; they watch and will tow.

A bright and bustling morning-hours counterpart to its sibling restaurant Madison, Madi is a haven for the Sunday brunch crowd. With colorful decor and no fewer than six different variations of mimosa on the menu, it's youthful and indulgent, but not exclusive to weekends—Madi serves its gooey morning treats like peanut butter and banana pancakes and chilaquiles every day starting at 8.

For quick healthy bite, Mendocino Farms offers a convenient selection of chef-created sandwiches, salads, soups, and sides with comfortable and abundant seating. Kids will enjoy the corner chalkboard area with free rein to doodle.

This local chain of women- and Filipino-owned coffee shops opened in Hillcrest in 2024, bringing with them their selection of award-winning beans ethically sourced from farms around the Philippines. Try one of their milk-based espresso drinks crafted by talented baristas on-site, or sign up for a coffee subscription to get a variety of blends and roasts mailed anywhere for free in the U.S.

The doughnuts at Nomad are big, fluffy, colorful, and would make Homer Simpson drool. Its rotating menu of internationally inspired doughnut flavors is made with natural ingredients, like real fruit, and almost all of them have a vegan counterpart as well. Just make sure to show up early—doughnuts this good don't stick around for long.

Despite Old Town's (somewhat accurate) reputation as a tourist trap, Old Town Mexican Cafe has been a favorite for locals and tourists since opening in 1977. Expect crowds from open until close, with a line of guests hungry for popular breakfast dishes like chilaquiles, omelettes, and huevos rancheros, as well as lunch and dinner specialties like fish tacos, carne asada, enchiladas, and much more. Wash it all down with one of their famous margaritas or michelada made with lime, clamato, and your choice of beer (any Mexican Lager strongly recommended).

Behind the dripping ferns and inside the eye-catching Millennial pink building wrapping around the corner of Goldfinch and Washington is Paradis, an all-day café and Spanish pintxo bar serving coffee, pastries, brunch, and tapas. Classic California dishes like avocado toast and acai bowls are available, as well as more European-inspired goodies like crispy patatas and Calabrian dates. Ritual Coffee provides the beans and the baristas can whip up anything from flat whites to cappuccinos, macchiatos, and more. Seating is available inside or in the enclosed courtyard, which also leads to the rooftop restaurant-with-a-view, Communion. 

Dual concepts sit side-by-side with a shared patio always buzzing with activity. Start your day with a matcha latte and freshly baked pastry from Secret Sister; in the evening, it's time for oysters and natty wine at The Rose Wine Bar.
