13 Best Hotels in Eastern Arizona, Arizona

Background Illustration for Hotels

Most places supply clean rooms without many frills. These aren’t the world-class resorts and spas of Phoenix, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. "Resort" in this area means you’ll probably have a room with a kitchenette and occasional (but not daily) maid service in a picturesque, woodsy setting. Plan on bringing your own toiletries and the like (there’s a reason some of these prices are so affordable).

Heritage Inn Bed & Breakfast

$ | 161 N. Main St., Snowflake, AZ, 85937, USA Fodor's Choice

While the Heritage Inn's structure dates back to 1878, nothing about a visit to this B&B will feel like roughing it. Newly renovated and under new ownership, the charming redbrick Inn might be the most modern spot in a 50-mile radius: it has its own Tesla charging station, powerful Wi-Fi, and large, flat-screen TVs in guest rooms. Note that some rooms have just a Jacuzzi tub and no shower; ask before you book.

Pros

  • Powerful in-room Wi-Fi
  • Newly remodeled rooms
  • Exceptional service

Cons

  • Some rooms only have a Jacuzzi tub with no shower
  • Not much going on in town
  • Continental breakfast

Hannagan Meadow Lodge

$ | 23150 U.S. 191, Hannagan Meadow, AZ, 85920, USA

Located about 50 miles south of Springerville along the picturesque Coronado Trail, Hannagan Meadow is considered remote—even by Eastern Arizona standards. One of the last places to stop along the trail, Hannagan Meadow Lodge is a great place to spend a night. Choose to stay in the historic lodge or more rustic log cabins, some of which have full kitchens and fireplaces, while others are equipped with microwaves, stove tops, and wood-burning stoves. Three meals a day are served at the on-site restaurant—a good thing considering there's not much for a half hour in either direction.

Pros

  • Gorgeous surroundings
  • Fantastic service
  • Absolute solitude

Cons

  • Don't rely on daily room cleaning
  • More lodge than hotel
  • 30--60 minute drive to next restaurant, gas, and hotel

Hon-Dah Resort Casino and Conference Center

$$ | 777 AZ 260, Pinetop, AZ, 85935, USA

Stuffed high-country animals atop a mountain of boulders welcome you to Hon-Dah, operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe (the name means "Welcome to my home" in Apache). The main draw is the casino, with hundreds of slot machines, live poker and blackjack, and live entertainment on weekends. Large guest rooms all have coffeemakers and wet bars, and offer comfortable but not luxurious accommodations. A high-roofed atrium holds the pool and hot tub. The Indian Pine Restaurant serves three buffet meals daily, and a small gift shop sells local Apache crafts.

  • Big draw for the casino crowd
  • Employees are locals who take pride in their community

Reed's Lodge

$$ | 514 E. Main St., Springerville, AZ, 85938, USA

This older motor lodge might have new ownership, but it's still decidedly, and charmingly, stuck in the past: what used to be a complete homage to the American Western is now home to a kitschy, quirky vibe throughout the motel-style rooms, which are being renovated one-by-one. Vinyl records adorn the walls of one room, while another has a vintage rotary phone. The John Wayne memorabilia is gone, replaced by stronger Wi-Fi and updated fixtures.

Pros

  • Well priced
  • Kitschy, retro vibe
  • Great location

Cons

  • Modest accommodations
  • Few frills
  • Renovations ongoing

Whispering Pines Resort

$ | 237 E. White Mountain Blvd. (AZ 260), Pinetop-Lakeside, AZ, 85935, USA

On 13 acres bordering the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest, these well-maintained cabins are in walking distance of Woodland Lake and Walnut Creek. The cabins have fireplaces (wood or natural gas), grills, and double sofa beds. One-, two-, and three-bedroom units—some with second bathrooms—have either handsome knotty-pine or more modern wood-panel interiors. The four log cabins, three of them studio units, have a "hideaway cabin" vibe. Couples may want to request one of the alpine suites with a whirlpool tub.

The more nights you stay, the more you save.

  • Free pass to local gym
  • Some cabins have luxury touches such as whirlpool baths

Cons

  • Not all cabins are equal

On the National Register of Historic Places, the iconic Wigwam consists of 15 bright-white concrete teepees. As you might expect, wigwams are phoneless; however, they do have cable TV. A small lobby museum exhibits Mexican, Native American, and military relics collected by the owner's family. All the classic cars parked by the teepees also belong to the owners.

Pros

  • Impeccably kitschy
  • One of the signature spots along Route 66
  • A travel bucket-list item
