The bourgeois families who built their homes around the fountain and trees here in the late 1870s would probably be dismayed to see the kind of people who congregate in their little park today. It's difficult to walk through the place without dodging a skateboarder or a panhandler. But they're generally a friendly bunch, and the square is still worth a visit just to see the elegant and colorful Second Empire–style homes that surround it.
