The Algonquin Resort

$$$ | 184 Adolphus St., St. Andrews, NB, E5B 1T7, Canada Fodor's Choice

This iconic resort has been meticulously restored to perfectly recapture the historic elegance that made it legendary, with every architectural detail inside and out preserved and black-and-white photographs throughout recalling the hotel's earlier heyday—yet every modern comfort has been provided. Bedrooms are in traditional style, with high ceilings, muted color schemes, grand padded headboards on the beds, and cozy chairs, but with ultramodern bathrooms, flat-screen televisions, and free Wi-Fi among the amenities. There’s a range of suites, too, some with separate living areas and kitchens, and some rooms have a balcony. The good range of resort amenities include a superb golf course, a spa and hair salon, and indoor and outdoor pools. The spacious lawns have a couple of firepits to sit around on balmy evenings, and there's a public piano out there, too (or you can borrow one of the hotel's guitars). There's sophisticated dining in Braxton's restaurant and, in addition to room service, you can have your meal served anywhere in the public areas that takes your fancy. The Smokehouse BBQ & Bar on the golf course has a patio with a stunning view.

Pros

  • Luxurious surroundings
  • Indoor pool has a three-story waterslide
  • Spacious studio rooms with kitchenettes

Cons

  • A bit of a walk from the waterfront hub
  • Fire-pits are near rooms so can get noisy
  • Not all rooms have a view of the bay
