27 Best Hotels in Vancouver, British Columbia

Background Illustration for Hotels

Vancouver is a pretty compact city, but each neighborhood has a distinct character and its own style of accommodations options. From hip boutique hotels to historic bed-and-breakfasts to sharp-angled glass-and-mirror towers, there are lodging choices for every style and budget. You can choose to be in the center of the shopping action on Robson Street, among the gracious tree-lined boulevards near Stanley Park, or in close proximity to the pulsing heart of the city's core.

Vancouver is an extremely outdoorsy community, so hotel amenities can sometimes include free bicycles and free ski storage, and many concierges can put you in contact with hiking and running groups that welcome visitors. Some properties even offer complimentary limo service, usually to the theater, or for picking you up after shopping, which comes in especially handy if you have lots of bags.

The city is extremely pet-friendly, especially when it comes to dogs. Not only can you bring your pooch with you to many Vancouver properties, some even let you borrow their dog for a walk (check out the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, for instance).

With its goal to become the greenest city in the world by 2020 (as in eco-wise, not with respect to the already abundant natural greenery), recycling and sustainability are essential parts of life in Vancouver. Many hoteliers have also made eco-friendly practices an integral part of the guest experience. For example, Fairmont Waterfront was among the first in the world to adopt a green roof concept—the garden and apiary supply the hotel with herbs and honey—and it has electric vehicle charging stations. The hotel also initiated groundbreaking water conservation and waste management systems. Supporting the community and protecting the surrounding landscapes have become good business practices, and the Westin Bayshore followed the trend by financially assisting in the creation of Cardero Park, on the east side of the property.

Be forewarned though: environmental awareness and community building are top of mind for most Vancouverites. That means hotels with a water view or exemplary environmental report cards are coveted and book up well in advance. Some of the historic bed-and-breakfasts you'll find in the more homey residential neighborhoods like the West End and near Stanley Park are also extremely popular.

Rosewood Hotel Georgia

$$$$ | 801 W. Georgia St., Vancouver, BC, V6C 1P7, Canada Fodor's Choice
Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Downtown
Hawksworth Restaurant

The classy Rosewood is one of the city's most historic properties: the 1927 Georgian Revival building once welcomed prestigious guests such as Elvis Presley and Katharine Hepburn. The rooms are elegant but can be noisy if facing busy Georgia Street, and Classic rooms can be on the small side. Pay the extra money, and go for the Deluxe. The entire hotel has a cool retro feel that infuses original features like ornamental wood and brass finishings with antiques upholstered in snappy fresh fabrics. Be sure to pick up the map of the impressive contemporary art collection gracing the lobby, the second floor, and the fourth-floor terrace. This is where to find Reflections, a year-round garden patio that's a lounging oasis of foliage, tapas, and cocktails. Sense, the on-site spa, is a luxurious retreat, while Hawksworth, the on-site restaurant and lounge, is a destination in its own right. For a quiet rendezvous, check out the bar that's tucked away in a corner of the lobby.

Pros

  • At the center of the city's action
  • Top-rated spa
  • Destination restaurant

Cons

  • Expensive parking (C$57/night)
  • Restaurant can get very busy
  • On Vancouver's busiest thoroughfare

Fairmont Pacific Rim

$$$$ | 1038 Canada Pl., Vancouver, BC, V6C 0B9, Canada Fodor's Choice

Overlooking the Downtown waterfront, and across from the impressive convention center, this ultraluxurious 47-story tower represents the Fairmont's first foray into the condominium-hotel format. The result? Multi-million-dollar hotel rooms that embody extravagance, with lavish views, swank design, tall windows, and plush amenities that include the signature on-site Willow Stream spa, poolside cabanas beneath palm trees, and use of the courtesy car service. Many trendsetters and big names (Lady Gaga for example) stay here. The Lobby Lounge & Raw Bar features live music daily and is one of the city's "must gather at" spots. Botanist Restaurant & Bar focuses on the flavors of the Pacific Northwest (we love its glass-walled garden), and the Giovane Cafe is a casual alternative.

OPUS Vancouver Hotel

$$$$ | 322 Davie St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 5Z6, Canada Fodor's Choice

Groundbreakingly trendy when it opened in 2002, the OPUS continues to reinvent itself and live up to the motto of being a "place to be, not just a place to stay." The design team created a set of online fictitious characters, then decorated the rooms to suit each "persona." Guests are matched with room styles using the Lifestyle Concierge. For example, Billy's room is fun and offbeat, with pop art and lime-green accents. Dede's room has leopard skin, velveteen, and faux-fur accents. All have an iPad to bring the city to your fingertips, ultrafast Wi-Fi, lots of natural light, and views of the city or the Japanese garden in the courtyard. Two rooms have private access to the garden. Other perks include an excellent on-site restaurant and free car service anywhere Downtown. The Canada Line from the airport is steps away.

Century Plaza Hotel & Spa

This one-time condo complex means many units come with full kitchens, large rooms, and an on-site laundry to make this 30-story Downtown high-rise a good family choice. (However, there aren't any kid-amenities, such as a pool.) The contemporary marble-tile lobby doesn't convey much warmth, but then you're only passing through, right? North-facing rooms above the seventh floor have mountain and ocean views; one-bedroom suites have spa-like bathrooms; and corner suites have balconies. The hotel's C-Prime Restaurant offers upscale Italian dishes.

Fairmont Waterfront Hotel

Stunning views of the harbor, mountains, and Stanley Park from the floor-to-ceiling windows of the guest rooms are one of the highlights of this luxuriously modern 23-story hotel across the street from Vancouver's cruise-ship terminal. Rooms are light and airy, with blonde-wood furnishings and original, contemporary Canadian artwork. Elevator waits can be frustrating, but remember that rooms on the lower floors won't have the same fabulous views. Next to the mountain-view pool (heated year round) is a rooftop herb garden with a number of beehives cared for by the hotel's Bee Concierge. It's an aromatic retreat open to guests; the honey is used in hand-churned ice cream and several cocktails at ARC Restaurant.

Granville Island Hotel

For locals and visitors, Granville Island is one of Vancouver's most popular destinations but unless you've moored up in a houseboat, the only overnight option is the Granville Island Hotel, a waterfront building that's part Mission style, part industrial, but the result is modern and sophisticated. Most guest rooms have water views through full-length windows. Rooms on the top floor have small balconies. A quality hotel with large rooms, the pet-friendly Pinnacle Hotel Harbourfront is a good base for exploring Downtown by foot, bicycle, or car. Op art decor makes for colorful rooms, which have either Juliet or full-size glassed-in balconies with city or (in the more expensive rooms) partial water and mountain views. (FYI, the higher the floor, the better the view.) With an indoor pool, a health club, and complimentary use of hotel bikes, guests will appreciate the amenities and the practical location (it's near the Vancouver Convention Centre, business district, and Stanley Park). Sylvia Hotel

$$$$ | 1154 Gilford St., Vancouver, BC, V6G 2P6, Canada

This Virginia-creeper-covered 1912 heritage building is continually popular because of its affordable rates and near-perfect location: a stone's throw from the beach on scenic English Bay, two blocks from Stanley Park, and a 20-minute walk from Robson Street. The rooms and apartment-style suites vary from tiny to spacious. Many of the basic (but comfortable) rooms are large enough to sleep four, and all have windows that open. Weekly and monthly stays are available. The place has such charm and character that to stay here in June through August you must book at least six months ahead. If you've walked the seawall, Sylvia's Lounge is a great pit stop for afternoon tea or a cocktail.

Pros

  • Beachfront location
  • Close to restaurants
  • A good place to mingle with the locals

Cons

  • Older building

Vancouver Marriott Pinnacle Downtown Hotel

$$$$ | 1128 W. Hastings St., Vancouver, BC, V6E 4R5, Canada

Close to the cruise ship terminal and midway between the central business district and Stanley Park, the Marriott Pinnacle is a sleek, large-scale hotel with stunning views—once you get past the rather jumbled welcome of the atrium lobby trying to be all things from lounge to bar (with live music Friday and Saturday) to restaurant to registration area. Guest rooms each have almost a full wall of windows overlooking Burrard Inlet and the North Shore Mountains or the city skyline. Standard rooms tend to be on the small side. The indoor pool and easy access to the restaurants of Coal Harbour add to the appeal.

Pros

  • Accessible to waterfront
  • Walking distance to Stanley Park
  • Great happy hour prices

Cons

  • Check-in time is 4 pm
  • Generic decor
  • Overnight parking is C$45

Westin Bayshore, Vancouver

$$$$ | 1601 Bayshore Dr., Vancouver, BC, V6G 2V4, Canada

Next to Stanley Park and with the marina on its doorstep, the Westin Bayshore, Vancouver has impressive harbor and mountain views. Most rooms take full advantage of the location with floor-to-ceiling windows that open to a railing or a step-out balcony. Interiors are cheery and comfortable, with plush armchairs and comfortable beds. The only Downtown conference and resort hotel, the Bayshore is also rich with recreational opportunities, including fishing charters, sightseeing cruises, complimentary bicycles, and poolside yoga. It's a pick up point for free shuttles to the North Shore and the hop-on/hop-off bus stops nearby. Vancouver's Seawall Walk connects the resort to Stanley Park and Canada Place.

Pros

  • Resort amenities
  • Fabulous water views
  • Great waterside walkways

Cons

  • Conference center draws many business travelers
