47 Best Hotels in Vancouver, British Columbia

Background Illustration for Hotels

Vancouver is a pretty compact city, but each neighborhood has a distinct character and its own style of accommodations options. From hip boutique hotels to historic bed-and-breakfasts to sharp-angled glass-and-mirror towers, there are lodging choices for every style and budget. You can choose to be in the center of the shopping action on Robson Street, among the gracious tree-lined boulevards near Stanley Park, or in close proximity to the pulsing heart of the city's core.

Vancouver is an extremely outdoorsy community, so hotel amenities can sometimes include free bicycles and free ski storage, and many concierges can put you in contact with hiking and running groups that welcome visitors. Some properties even offer complimentary limo service, usually to the theater, or for picking you up after shopping, which comes in especially handy if you have lots of bags.

The city is extremely pet-friendly, especially when it comes to dogs. Not only can you bring your pooch with you to many Vancouver properties, some even let you borrow their dog for a walk (check out the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, for instance).

With its goal to become the greenest city in the world by 2020 (as in eco-wise, not with respect to the already abundant natural greenery), recycling and sustainability are essential parts of life in Vancouver. Many hoteliers have also made eco-friendly practices an integral part of the guest experience. For example, Fairmont Waterfront was among the first in the world to adopt a green roof concept—the garden and apiary supply the hotel with herbs and honey—and it has electric vehicle charging stations. The hotel also initiated groundbreaking water conservation and waste management systems. Supporting the community and protecting the surrounding landscapes have become good business practices, and the Westin Bayshore followed the trend by financially assisting in the creation of Cardero Park, on the east side of the property.

Be forewarned though: environmental awareness and community building are top of mind for most Vancouverites. That means hotels with a water view or exemplary environmental report cards are coveted and book up well in advance. Some of the historic bed-and-breakfasts you'll find in the more homey residential neighborhoods like the West End and near Stanley Park are also extremely popular.

Rosewood Hotel Georgia

$$$$ | 801 W. Georgia St., Vancouver, BC, V6C 1P7, Canada Fodor's Choice
Rosewood Hotel Georgia, Downtown
Hawksworth Restaurant

The classy Rosewood is one of the city's most historic properties: the 1927 Georgian Revival building once welcomed prestigious guests such as Elvis Presley and Katharine Hepburn. The rooms are elegant but can be noisy if facing busy Georgia Street, and Classic rooms can be on the small side. Pay the extra money, and go for the Deluxe. The entire hotel has a cool retro feel that infuses original features like ornamental wood and brass finishings with antiques upholstered in snappy fresh fabrics. Be sure to pick up the map of the impressive contemporary art collection gracing the lobby, the second floor, and the fourth-floor terrace. This is where to find Reflections, a year-round garden patio that's a lounging oasis of foliage, tapas, and cocktails. Sense, the on-site spa, is a luxurious retreat, while Hawksworth, the on-site restaurant and lounge, is a destination in its own right. For a quiet rendezvous, check out the bar that's tucked away in a corner of the lobby.

Pros

  • At the center of the city's action
  • Top-rated spa
  • Destination restaurant

Cons

  • Expensive parking (C$57/night)
  • Restaurant can get very busy
  • On Vancouver's busiest thoroughfare

Barclay House

$$$ | 1351 Barclay St., Vancouver, BC, V6E 1H6, Canada Fodor's Choice

If you want to get a feel for living in one of the West End's upscale homes, just a few blocks from Stanley Park, book a room at this comfortable B&B. Stained glass, fine antiques, and art nouveau fixtures decorate the 1904 house (an early Francis Rattenbury design), and the fireplace, leather couch, and extensive DVD library make it a cozy evening or rainy-day hangout. Most rooms have private sitting areas, and several have claw-foot tubs and queen-size brass, mahogany, or canopy beds. The Mountain Room has a private balcony. Peace is assured, as there are no adjoining walls between guest rooms. The staff is exceptionally helpful. The generous breakfasts always include one hot dish. If the weather's warm, ask to enjoy it in the garden gazebo.

This restored 1912 Craftsman-style house near the beach in Kitsilano combines the comforts of a B&B with a quirky tribute to the humble corkscrew: guests are encouraged to explore the small wine paraphernalia museum. Fairmont Pacific Rim

$$$$ | 1038 Canada Pl., Vancouver, BC, V6C 0B9, Canada Fodor's Choice

Overlooking the Downtown waterfront, and across from the impressive convention center, this ultraluxurious 47-story tower represents the Fairmont's first foray into the condominium-hotel format. The result? Multi-million-dollar hotel rooms that embody extravagance, with lavish views, swank design, tall windows, and plush amenities that include the signature on-site Willow Stream spa, poolside cabanas beneath palm trees, and use of the courtesy car service. Many trendsetters and big names (Lady Gaga for example) stay here. The Lobby Lounge & Raw Bar features live music daily and is one of the city's "must gather at" spots. Botanist Restaurant & Bar focuses on the flavors of the Pacific Northwest (we love its glass-walled garden), and the Giovane Cafe is a casual alternative.

OPUS Vancouver Hotel

$$$$ | 322 Davie St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 5Z6, Canada Fodor's Choice

Groundbreakingly trendy when it opened in 2002, the OPUS continues to reinvent itself and live up to the motto of being a "place to be, not just a place to stay." The design team created a set of online fictitious characters, then decorated the rooms to suit each "persona." Guests are matched with room styles using the Lifestyle Concierge. For example, Billy's room is fun and offbeat, with pop art and lime-green accents. Dede's room has leopard skin, velveteen, and faux-fur accents. All have an iPad to bring the city to your fingertips, ultrafast Wi-Fi, lots of natural light, and views of the city or the Japanese garden in the courtyard. Barclay Hotel

$$ | 1348 Robson St., Vancouver, BC, V6E 1C5, Canada

The location, just steps from great shopping and with affordable rates, make this three-story building one of the city's best-value pensione-style hotels. The guest rooms are bright and clean, if a bit basic. But the 1930s building, with its wide corridors, skylights, and mahogany staircase, has old-world charm. Most of the front rooms overlooking Robson Street have mountain views, but the back rooms are quieter. Because the hotel caters to bus tours, make sure to book in advance.

For locals and visitors, Granville Island is one of Vancouver's most popular destinations but unless you've moored up in a houseboat, the only overnight option is the Granville Island Hotel, a waterfront building that's part Mission style, part industrial, but the result is modern and sophisticated. All units have deep soaking tubs. The hotel has a small fitness studio and pool, and is close to the main sports and entertainment district and plenty of fashionable restaurants.

Kingston Hotel

$$ | 757 Richards St., Vancouver, BC, V6B 3A6, Canada
Convenient to shopping and nightlife, the budget-friendly, family-run Kingston occupies a four-story elevator building dating back to 1910—this is the type of lodging you'd expect to find in Europe. Rooms are small but immaculate, and rather old-fashioned, decor-wise. Some rooms have private bathrooms; others have a sink in the room and share a bath down the hall. North-facing rooms overlook the Kingston Taphouse and Grille next door—it's not an issue in winter, but in summer, the bar talk below might disturb early-to-bed types. A sauna and coin-operated laundry are useful to know about.

Pros

  • Great location
  • Breakfast included
  • Single rooms available

Cons

  • Some shared bathrooms
  • Limited amenities
  • No in-room safe

Loden Hotel

$$$$ | 1177 Melville St., Vancouver, BC, V6E 0A3, Canada

This modish, designer boutique hotel offers a variety of perks to enhance your stay, including rooms equipped with Wi-Fi, TVs with oversized LCD screens, a Nespresso machine, and a yoga mat. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the spacious guest rooms with natural light—and if you slide open the bathroom's half wall you can enjoy the views from the soaker tub. Ask for an upgrade upon arrival, and you might get a corner room with two walls of windows for fabulous views, or a one-bedroom suite. Although centrally located, the hotel is on a side street, so it's much quieter than its Downtown counterparts. There's a state-of-the-art gym and free bicycles to explore the city, as well as a London-style taxi. (The cabbie provides drop off/pick up services Downtown.) The hotel's Tableau Bar Bistro, serving French-influenced west coast cuisine, is a great spot, too.

Pros

  • Quiet, central location
  • Free bicycles and Downtown car service
  • 1,400-square-foot fitness studio

Cons

  • Locals tend to snag best lounge and restaurant seats
  • No pool
