Sparkling Hill Resort
The wine industry has added a quiet sophistication with the development of higher-end lodgings and boutique inns geared to wine-and-food lovers. This means that from July to September you need to reserve early, especially if you're planning on visiting on a weekend. The Kelowna region is more urban, but it has a greater range of accommodations and other services. The Naramata and Oliver/Osoyoos areas are both prettier and more rural.
The guest suites at this resort on the western shore of Okanagan Lake have all the comforts of home and then some: fully equipped kitchens complete with special fridges to chill your wine, 55-inch plasma TVs, washer-dryers, and fireplaces. Kids can amuse themselves at the pools, or watching a movie in the media center, while active adults gravitate to the small fitness room, the spa, or outdoor hot tub. The chic, Southwestern-style Bonfire Restaurant & Bar is a striking setting for a drink, and embraces the farm-to-table food ethos.
As the name might suggest, this resort, right on the beachfront of Osoyoos Lake, offers beautiful views and luxurious suites. Suites come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, gourmet kitchens, laundry, and more. The resort also has a fantastic indoor-and-outdoor restaurant, a large pool, two hot tubs, a spa, and fitness center. For an extra fee, you can rent stand-up paddleboards or take a yoga class.
On the shore of Okanagan Lake, this resort is a five-minute stroll from downtown Kelowna, though you may never want to leave the grounds because of all the amenities—there's even a casino. Most rooms and suites have sitting areas and balconies; about half have views of the lake and the surrounding hills. The two-bedroom waterfront condos are a good option for families with their full kitchens, washer-dryers, and gas fireplaces.
For jet-lagged travelers on their way to wine country and wishing to bypass Kelowna, a 25-minute drive away, this hotel, which opened in 2013, fits the bill as a resting stop. The contemporary decor is bright and airy with great views over rolling hills and vineyards. Guest rooms are spacious and have kitchenettes. The hotel offers a full gym with a pool, including a kid's tube slide, and a 24-hour complimentary airport shuttle. Gulfstream serves a good range of craft beers, and the wine rack–covered walls may very well set the tone of your visit.
Filled with intriguing nooks and crannies, this quirky Mediterranean-style villa has a gorgeous whitewashed exterior and sits on 48 rambling acres overlooking Skaha Lake. The spacious common rooms are crammed with an eclectic mix of antiques, plush cushions, and theatrical props; and you are free to use the large communal kitchen. The standard rooms are lovely, and of the four suites the Roofless Room is the most fun: the four-poster bed is sheltered under a canopy, but the rest of the room, including a fireplace, is open to the stars. Reservations are essential.
At this hotel dating back to 1908, many of the Mission-style furnishings, wood floors, and claw-foot tubs are original, but plenty of the amenities—heated bathroom floors, fluffy duvets, central air-conditioning—are au courant. It's charming and full of nostalgic elegance. The spa is equally inviting, with a good range of services. There's also an on-site restaurant, The Restaurant at Naramata Inn, and wine bar, Eliza, both of which have a large selection of Okanagan wines.
This hotel lives up to its name, with its incredible panoramic views of Okanagan Lake. The rooms are spacious and have plenty of extras like a fireplace, floor-to-ceiling windows, and spacious balconies. Their on-site restaurant, The Hooded Merganser, offers contemporary local fare like albacore tuna, salmon and orzo, and more.
Set on two stunning 18-hole golf courses, this full-service resort offers a wide range of accommodations, from studio, one-, and two-bedroom units in the modern Craftsman-style lodge to two- and three-bedroom cottages. All units have full kitchens (useful, since the resort is a 10-minute drive from town), though plentiful on-site dining options include the steak-focused Range Lounge & Grill, the Italian Pallino's, the casual Clubhouse Lounge, and a small café and market. Resort amenities include a gym with a 25-meter lap pool. Lodging and golf packages are available. Individual and small-group golf lessons are offered, as are a variety of golf camps. Note that the golf courses are closed from mid-October through early April, though the hotel stays open. The resort is in the hills 40 km (25 miles) north of Kelowna and 15 km (9 miles) south of Vernon, off Highway 97. About a 15-minute drive from the Scenic Sip wineries, which is six wineries just to the south.
This property, a more affordable hotel option in Vernon, is pet- and family-friendly and has a central location; but the huge selling factor here is the indoor tropical courtyard. The three-story organic courtyard has a pool, hot tub, two restaurants, and natural stream and is encompassed by lush trees and plants.
Owner Steve Marston and his wife Chrissy run this bed-and-breakfast in their contemporary home—he's a former restaurant chef who whips up elaborate breakfasts and offers periodic dinners and cooking demonstrations in his lavish kitchen.
