Fodor's Expert Review Secrets Puerto Los Cabos

The first of the all-inclusive chains to reach La Playita, this adults-only resort has swim-up rooms, ocean views, seven restaurants, and a 13,000 square-foot Spa by Pevonia. With 500 rooms overlooking the ocean and golf course, the property dwarfs the sleepy fishing village that is being rudely awakened by neighboring luxury resorts under construction. For now, Secrets has claimed this isolated strand to offer tranquillity far removed from the chaos of Cabo San Lucas. There’s practically no reason to leave this slice of heaven, with activities like tennis, archery, cooking classes, beach volleyball, tequila tastings, bike tours, and golf. There is even a batting cage and shooting range. The contemporary Mexican decor throughout the rooms, with rich dark woods and colors in burnt red and gold, are reminiscent of a hacienda. Palapas dot the beach for shade, and the main pool has mini-islands with palm trees. Ground-floor rooms have swim-up patios but lack ocean views. The property is enormous, so if excessive walking is an issue, request a room closer to building #1 where the lobby is located.
Not many resort openings are attended by the president of the country, as Secrets Puerto Los Cabos was when Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto flew in for the ribbon-cutting ceremony in 2014. The resort has lived up to its exalted billing, with 500 exquisitely decorated rooms showcasing king-sized beds (or two doubles) and picturesque private balconies or swim-up patios.
Spacious, luxuriously appointed baths boast both whirlpool tubs – complete with inset niches for aromatic candles – and walk-in showers.
A dramatically arched entryway leads into the interior lobby, where elegant sofas and Champagne colored armchairs are arrayed on carpets beneath a vaulted, wood-beamed ceiling, looking out at the Sea of Cortés through dramatically arched picture windows.
In addition to its swim-out suites, Secrets promises cool comfort in two enormous infinity-edged pools: one party pool with fully-stocked swim-up bar sculpted around inset palm trees; the other serene and quiet with spectacular vistas.
The property is set on the shores of La Playita, one of the most beautiful beaches in Los Cabos.
The 13,000 square foot Secrets Spa by Pevonia specializes in romantic couples massages, and pampering beauty salon services.
The fitness center offers a full range of equipment, from treadmills and ellipticals to resistance-oriented machines and free weights.
As part of the AMResorts family, Secrets offers the Unlimited Luxury all-inclusive plan, with food and drinks available at eight on-site restaurants and six bars. Dining highlights include fresh local seafood at Oceana, Italian fare at Portofino, pan-Asian cuisine at Himitsu, and traditional Mexican specialties at El Patio.
Rental cars are recommended for guests looking to explore life beyond the bounds of Puerto Los Cabos.
The region’s most acclaimed farm-to-table restaurants – Acre, Flora’s Field Kitchen, and Huerta Los Tamarindos – are a short drive from the resort (less than two miles away in Col. Ánimas Bajas).
The Puerto Los Cabos development is home to several excellent resorts, each with attractive drinking spots. Niparaya JW Bar at JW Marriott offers a stylish contemporary atmosphere in which to enjoy creative cocktails and top-shelf tequila; and El Ganzo’s Beach Club is a Corona commercial come to life. The upcoming opening of a Ritz-Carlton Reserve should add more sipping options.
WHY WE LIKE IT
Secrets shines with romantic, adults-only accommodations and amenities in one of Los Cabos’ most attractive luxury developments. Puerto Los Cabos not only has its own marina, and the world’s only composite golf course design from major champions Jack Nicklaus and Greg Norman, but it also features a world-class collection of art, including many sculptures from famed Surrealist Leonora Carrington.
