Adobe Guadalupe

$$$ | Off Highway 3 through Guadalupe village, Valle de Guadalupe, 22750, Mexico

Brick archways, fountains, and a pasture with white horses set a tone of endless tranquility at Tru Miller's magnificent country inn surrounded by vineyards. She has won several awards for her unique blended wines, helping to bring outside attention to the valley. Established in 1997, Adobe Guadalupe was one of the first vineyards to be planted in the region, and today it remains among the best with lovely wines (and rooms) named after angels. A fountain courtyard separates rooms from the main house where breakfast is served at a long wooden table. Most come here to relax and enjoy the wines, meaning rooms are simple and lack TVs. The inn's talented chefs do an admirable five-course dinner in the romantic dining room, generously paired with Adobe Guadalupe wines, for $70 per person; the three-course lunch with wine is available for $50. The latest addition to turn heads is Cuervo Restaurante, the hotel's alfresco restaurant specializing in flame-grilled fish and meats. Tru's stable of beautiful horses—she'll take you around the valley and to nearby wineries—is yet another draw.

Pros

  • On-site food truck serves great tapas
  • Electric car charging stations
  • Rates include wine tasting and breakfast

Cons

  • Weekends usually booked six months in advance
  • Chilly pool
  • No children under 12

Possibly the best bargain on the malecón, although a bit away from the city center itself, this vacation-ownership resort has very reasonable suite rentals on a nightly and weekly basis. Within El Moro you'll find a palm-filled garden and a densely landscaped pool area, though the pool itself is a bit shallow for much serious swimming. This casual, unfussy resort is touted as a romantic getaway, but with an average of five weddings a week, it's more a destination for families and wedding parties with guests of all ages in attendance. Guests simply check in at the restaurant or bar of their choice, rather than having to wear the brightly colored wristbands synonymous with all-inclusives. The U-shaped building wraps around two huge pools, with one set aside just for families. The spa, tennis courts, and nightly entertainment keep guests happy for days. Encuentro Guadalupe

$$$$ | Carretera Tecate–Ensenada, Km 75, San Antonio de las Minas, Mexico

With freestanding steel box-cabins perched on a boulder-strewn hill, this property has architect Jorge Gracia to thank for its innovative design. Dirt trails lead to 21 rooms (called “lofts”), each reminiscent of a shipping container from a distance, but inside you’ll find plush white bedding, concrete floors, rain-showerheads, and lamps made from steel pipes. In an effort to connect with nature, guests are given access to hiking trails and private decks with chimeneas that can be lit upon request. This also translates to no TVs, no phones (walkie-talkies provided), no room service, and very few room amenities. Despite these cutbacks, this still happens to be the most expensive property in wine country. Breakfast is served by the infinity pool bar, and the main restaurant (which changes hands frequently) is located at the foot of the mountain. Beyond this point, only guests of the hotel can enter and rooms must be reached by shuttle or on foot. Although inconsistent service has bruised this hotel's reputation, its new luxury villas and a spa are determined to get it back on track.

Pros

  • Pet-friendly
  • Unique design
  • Rate includes continental breakfast and wine tasting

Cons

  • No kids under 13
  • Must sign liability waivers at check-in
  • Room rates don’t match quality of service

https://www.facebook.com/HaciendaEncantada/

Despite the enormous size of this timeshare-resort hybrid, there are only 222 rooms, meaning guests are treated to 1,400-square-foot hacienda-style suites. The property itself replicates an old Mexican village, with rooms housed in two buildings tiered on a hillside so nearly every suite has an ocean view. Separating the buildings are two pools, one designated for activities and the other for peace and quiet. The five restaurants range from Mexican cuisine to grilled specialties; or guests can use all-inclusive privileges to dine at one of five restaurants on the marina in Cabo San Lucas. A hotel shuttle makes 10 trips a day to sister property Marina Fiesta. The on-site grocery store, pharmacy, and babysitting service make this resort popular with timeshare owners. Casa de los Santos
Kamal Schramm

The three casitas (guesthouses) and four newer suites here are beautifully furnished with canopied beds and antique art; each has access to lush grounds and the oldest swimming pool in Todos Santos. The pool was built in the 1950s, when the Rodríguez family bought the property as a hunting lodge for guests at their exclusive Rancho Las Cruces resort, 30 miles southeast of La Paz. The design style is a bit different for the four suites in Casa de Los Santos, but all have Saltillo-tiled floors, hand-carved furniture, and plenty of windows with which to appreciate the picturesque surroundings of palm groves, bamboo, and flower-filled gardens. One, Casa Santa Luz, has a wood-burning fireplace.

The legendary low-rise of the oldest hotel in Baja California Sur faces the malecón, and although it sometimes shows its age (it has seen plenty of action since 1940), the location is unbeatable. Rooms are a little kitschy, with light-wood furnishings and wall-painted scenes of local marine life; some have king-size beds. Las Ventanas al Paraíso

$$$$ | Hwy. 1, Km 19.5, The Corridor, 23400, Mexico Fodor's Choice
https://www.facebook.com/LasVentanas/

From the moment your private butler greets you with a foamy margarita and escorts you to the spa for a welcome massage, you know you're in for some serious pampering and a special experience. Despite the high room rates at this ultraprivate, ultraluxe spot, it can be hard to get a reservation. Guests here can unwind in suites that have hot tubs, fireplaces, and telescopes for viewing whales or stars. Newer hotels have attempted to copy Las Ventanas' touches, such as handcrafted lamps and doors, inlaid stone floors, and tequila welcome amenities, but this impeccable original remains the best. Service is sublime, with remarkable attention to detail. Don't be surprised if your butler leaves a monogrammed cleaning cloth on your sunglasses, or creates a customized sewing kit based on the colors of your wardrobe. The four restaurants (including a casual tequila and sushi bar) are outstanding; its signature "El Restaurante" showcases an all-Mexican menu that executes the classics with aplomb. The spa reflects the latest trends and stresses indigenous ingredients and holistic therapies. The 12 oceanfront villas each have a private swimming pool, full kitchen, media room, and glass pocket doors that open onto patios with garden showers, fire pits, and Jacuzzis.

Pros

  • Exceptional service
  • Stellar dining and wine/tequila selection
  • Experiences include whale safaris, magic show dinners, and more

Cons

  • There can be a four- to eight-night minimum depending on the season and holiday
  • 35% tax and gratuity added to every bill
  • Dangerous riptides

A mosaic sign (crafted by co-owner Ricardo Rode) near the entrance hints at the beauty inside this small stylish inn offering a relaxed atmosphere and boutique feel without the boutique cost. Brilliant purple bougainvillea and orange lipstick vines line the patio, which showcases more of Rode's works by the fountain and small pool. Bóveda-style (arched brick) roofs top the rooms, which have terra-cotta tile floors and handmade Mexican furniture. Five of the rooms have kitchenettes, four have double beds, and a sundeck on the second floor is great for catching rays. Brides on a budget might consider this hotel for a destination wedding, especially since a huge garden area is available for weddings and events.

  • One room is wheelchair accessible
  • Free Wi-Fi and TVs in every room
