Fodor's Expert Review Cabo Surf Hotel

Carretera Transpeninsular, Km 28, San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur 23400, México See on Map Fodor's Choice

Professional and amateur surfers alike claim the prime ocean-view rooms in this small hotel on the cliffs above Playa Acapulquito that has successfully blended surfing and pampering into one property. Tastefully decorated with surfing photographs and paintings, rooms have marble floors, huge terraces, minibars, king beds, and pull-out sofas; some have French doors that open to the sea breezes. Guests mingle by the swimming pool and in the Seven Seas restaurant (which has great fish tacos), and they schedule their day's activities around the daily surf report. A second \"quiet pool\" makes for a nice resting place after morning yoga. The hotel offers its own label of Cabo Surf Tequila, a surf school, and surfboard rentals. The small Sea Spa & Salon offers massages developed specifically for surfers' wave-taxed muscles, with many other treatments for non-surfers, too. Unlike most surf hotels, this property is not pet friendly and rooms are not for budget travelers. Book early at this popular spot.

Boutique chic accents distinguish the hotel’s 36 room and suites, from marble floors and Spanish linen curtains to handcrafted Mexican wood furniture and sea and surf inspired paintings. Most accommodations feature gorgeous ocean views, and either a terrace jacuzzi or hammock.

bathroom

Warm wooden cabinets, patterned tile walls, and marble countertops account for the bathrooms’ distinctive style. Boutique bath and body products from L’Occitane add yet another touch of class.

lobby

The lobby is comfortably and colorfully appointed, with elegant tropical style seating that spills out through stone framed glass doors onto the patio, and splashes of brilliant blue from the vivid seascapes that line the walls.

pool

Two night-lighted swimming pools and a hot tub offer freshwater alternatives to the nearby Sea of Cortés.

spa

Packages at Sea Spa Cabo include wellness therapies like Stress-Free by the Sea and Happy Couples. A full range of massages, body treatments, and beauty salon services are also available, as are boutique botanical body care products.

gym

The gym boasts treadmills and other basic equipment, but surfing remains the signature fitness activity. Rentals and lessons are offered through the on-site surf shop/surf school, opened by legendary former pro Mike Doyle.

dining

The on-site restaurant, 7 Seas Seafood Grille, is one of the best in the area, known for its fresh local seafood focused dishes and romantic seaside ambiance. It’s open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

7 Seas hosts special full moon dinners each month, featuring live jazz concerts.

drinking

Pairing options at 7 Seas include a branded tequila, and an impressive selection of international wines, sourced from notable producers in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, the U.S., France, Italy, Australia, and New Zealand. Premium Mexican coffees are another attractive beverage option.

LOCATION

Getting Around

Bus service between the cape cities is conveniently accessible and very cheap. Bus service to regional destinations like Todos Santos and La Paz is also available, but taxis, shuttle service, and rental cars are by far the most popular transportation options for guests at this intimate boutique hotel.

Restaurants

High-end shopping mecca Las Tiendas de Palmilla, AKA The Shoppes at Palmilla (2-minute drive along the Carretera Transpeninsular) is also home to several fine eateries, including sushi specialist Nick-San, Blue Fish Seafood, and Cream Café and Pizza Restaurant. The shopping center also hosts a California Ranch Market, the premier local source for organic groceries and other specialty food items.

Bars

Zipper’s Bar & Grill at neighboring playa Costa Azul is one of the best local beach bars, its ice-cold cervezas complemented by American comfort food favorites like burgers and bbq ribs, plus a large deck overlooking the most popular surf break on the Sea of Cortés side of Los Cabos (Zippers, site of the annual World Surf League sponsored Los Cabos Open of Surf tournament).

WHY WE LIKE IT

Although best known for its surf-friendly amenities and proximity to notable local surf breaks (Acapulquito, and Zippers and La Roca on Costa Azul), this scenically situated property is an excellent option for any visitors seeking intimate, upscale beachfront accommodations.
