Villas Carrizalillo

$$$ | Av. Carrizalillo 125, Puerto Escondido, 71980, Mexico Fodor's Choice

Perfect for those in search of a little solitude, these private, tile-roofed villas cling to a cliff above the gorgeous beach for which they were named; you descend to the idyllic shoreline via a very steep staircase. The villas range in size from a small studio to a three-bedroom apartment with a private terrace. All have a/c, and most have kitchenettes. A favorite, called the Puebla, has bay-view balconies. The road to the secluded property is dark, so you'll need to taxi out. Or, you can just stay in and enjoy the stunning views from the terrace bar.

W Mexico City

$$$ | Campos Eliseos 252, 11560, Mexico Fodor's Choice

The first W hotel in Latin America grooves with its bright colors, clever lighting, and a lobby that brings to mind a cool 1960s airport lounge. It manages to be informal and chic at the same time, with the staff clad in casual black rather than the usual stiff uniforms. Guestroom design is inspired by Mexican culture, including wall-size, fashion-magazine-style photos of models dressed as Aztec goddesses and lucha libre wrestlers, and infinity mirrors that reveal an art installation of fancifully carved, colorful, fantastical Oaxacan alebrije animal sculptures when LED lights are switched on. Modern conveniences are thoughtfully worked into the rooms, which feature plenty of well-placed power outlets (including built-in adapters for European plugs) and a "jack pack" cleverly hidden within the spacious work desks. The Away Spa and Fitness Center has a huge pre-Hispanic temazcal (adobe-domed sweat lodge).

Pros

  • Tech-friendly amenties
  • Gorgeous decoration with thoughtful touches of Mexican culture
  • Beautiful spa and fitness center

Cons

  • Not a great choice for families with small children
  • No swimming pool
  • Ultramodern design is not for everyone

On the beach in San José del Cabo, this chic, whitewashed property is peaceful from the moment you walk through the 20-foot antique door to a waterfall wall and marble floors that lead to a breathtaking lobby centered on a circular rope structure that drops 1,200 feet from the ceiling. Zoëtry Paraíso de la Bonita, Punta Tanchacté
AMResorts

A pair of stone dragons guards the entrance to this eclectic resort, where the spacious rooms—all with sweeping sea and jungle views—are elegantly styled after worldwide destinations, Italy, Mexico, and Bali among them. Manicured grounds feature colorful parrots and wild lizards. All-inclusive really covers everything at Zoëtry resorts, from food and drinks to tips, phone calls, laundry and room service, a sunset catamaran ride, and full access to the thalassotherapy spa. You can also upgrade with a private romantic dinner in the 125-label wine cellar. If you take advantage of all the extras, the expensive property becomes a good deal. Menus in the five restaurants riff on Asian and Mexican traditions, and the three bars offer three very different ambiences: one a quiet, lush, air-conditioned library, another a sunny beachfront pool bar, and another with billiards and a sophisticated atmosphere.

Adobe Guadalupe

$$$ | Off Hwy. 3 through Guadalupe village, Valle de Guadalupe, 22750, Mexico

As the grand dame of the valley, this magnificent country inn surrounded by vineyards welcomes you with brick archways, fountains, and a pasture with white horses. Owner Tru Miller has won several awards for her unique blended wines, helping to bring outside attention to the valley. Established in 1997, Adobe Guadalupe was one of the first vineyards to be planted in the region, and today it remains among the best with lovely wines (and rooms) named after angels. A fountain courtyard separates rooms from the main house where breakfast is served at a long wooden table. Most come here to relax and enjoy the wines, meaning rooms are simple with king beds, terra-cotta tile flooring, and a European feel that exudes both warmth and elegance. The inn's talented chefs do an admirable five-course dinner in the romantic dining room beside the fire, generously paired with Adobe Guadalupe wines, for $110 per person; the three-course lunch with wine is available for $82. Tru's stable of beautiful horses—she'll take you around the property—is yet another draw (one hour, $100).

Pros

  • On-site food truck serves great tapas Thursday–Monday
  • Electric car charging stations
  • Rates include wine tasting and breakfast

Cons

  • Weekends usually booked six months in advance
  • Chilly pool
  • No children under 12

Pampering perks include soft linens, thick towels, and other amenities like honey shampoo, chocolate soap, and handmade candles. Dishes at the restaurant are prepared with natural ingredients from the on-site garden, and the small spa offers massages, mud masks, and temazcal rituals, but gets decidedly mixed reviews. Kayaks and bikes are included in the rate, while yoga and boat trips are available at extra cost.

Al Cielo Hotel

$$$ | Carretera 307, Km 118, Xpu-Há, 77790, Mexico

On the powdery shores of Xpu-Há, this boutique inn has four chic rooms named after the four elements, all with hardwood floors, thatched roofs, and beds draped in white curtains. Rooms on the top floor have unobstructed ocean views, while those on the ground floor have private plunge pools; the two-story villas have their own infinity pool and are the only category that allows children. Patios with two-person hammocks face the sea, but if you want to get closer, head to the tiny palapas in the sand where silk curtains hang over thatched umbrellas for added privacy. Since a car is needed to reach restaurants in Playa del Carmen, most guests opt for the half-board package, which includes breakfast, dinner, a bottle of wine, and a couples' massage.

Avandaro Golf and Spa Resort

$$$ | Valle de Bravo, 51200, Mexico

This former country club morphed into the one of the most upscale resorts in Valle. All guest rooms have fireplaces and great views of the pine forest. If the 18-hole, par-72 golf course doesn't tempt you, perhaps a massage, facial, or yoga class at the high-tech spa will. The property is about 10 minutes from Valle de Bravo, so if you didn't come by car you'll need to take taxis into town.

Pros

  • Excellent service
  • Great restaurant
  • Excellent golf

Cons

  • Room sizes and costs vary significantly
  • Far from downtown
  • Area gets quite cold

Aventura Mexicana

$ | Calle 24, Playa del Carmen, 77710, Mexico

This small, colorful inn three blocks from the beach is split in two, with a family-friendly side and a separate adults-only area, both with pools. The garden restaurant serves up tasty fare for an early dinner (try the tequila shrimp, but go early: it closes at 9 to keep noise down for guests). A palapa out back hosts a weekly fresh market and daily pay-what-you-can yoga classes. The design is a work of art, with Mexican decor, batik wall hangings, and rustic wood-frame beds. Junior suites in both buildings have living rooms and microwaves for a quick meal. There's also a small business center and spa.

Pros

  • Good restaurant
  • Friendly staff
  • Discounts at Kool Beach Club

Cons

  • Patchy Wi-Fi
  • Open shower layout in some rooms
  • No ocean views
