10 Best Hotels in Cancún, Mexico

Background Illustration for Hotels

You might find it bewildering to choose among Cancún's many hotels, not least because brochures and websites make them sound—and look—almost exactly alike. For luxury and amenities, the Zona Hotelera is the place to stay. In the modest Centro, local color outweighs facilities. The hotels here are more basic and much less expensive than those in the Zona. If you want to be in the heart of the action, northern hotels near Punta Cancún are within walking distance of the nightclubs. Quieter properties are located at the southern end of Boulevard Kukulcán and in the residential streets between El Centro and the Zona Hotelera at Laguna Nichupté near the Pok-Ta-Pok Golf Course.

Many hotels have all-inclusive packages, as well as theme-night parties complete with food, beverages, activities, and games. Take note: generally the larger the all-inclusive resort, the blander the food (and the more watered-down the cocktails). For more memorable meals, you may need to dine off-site and essentially pay for food you're not consuming.

Many of the larger and more popular all-inclusives will no longer guarantee an ocean-view room when you make your reservation. If this is important to you, check that all rooms have ocean views at your chosen hotel, or book only at places that will guarantee one. Be sure to bring your confirmation information with you to prove you paid for an ocean-view room. Also be careful about lost wristbands and unreturned towels, since many resorts have started charging up to $150 per day for the former and $25 for the latter. When checking out, make sure the hotel hasn't tacked on excessive phone or minibar charges, as some tend to do. At check-in, ask if your “all-inclusive” rate includes tips—some resorts are now automatically adding 15% gratuities—and "resort fees," which tend to be hidden supplementary charges.

Aloft Cancún

$ | Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 9, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

This hip Marriott property near the convention center has a fresh, modern concept that generates quite a social scene. The funky lobby features bright mismatched furniture, cement floors, exposed ductwork, modern art, and a lounge bar. Smallish rooms have leather benches, ergonomic desk chairs, white duvets, and all the basic amenities (minibars, Wi-Fi, TVs, and safes). Although there's only one restaurant, the 24-hour snack bar lets you grab and go. Aloft isn't on the beach, but guests receive access to the neighboring beach club. The 360-degree view from the rooftop pool is unparalleled.

Ambiance Suites Cancún

$ | Av. Tulum 227, Sm 20, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Branding itself as "your home and office" and catering mostly to business travelers, this modern hotel just two blocks from the Plaza Las Américas shopping center has guest rooms with a plasma TV, minibar, coffeemaker, and Wi-Fi. Although suites also have a sitting area and a microwave, only those overlooking the pool have a pleasant view. El Rey del Caribe

$ | Av. Uxmal 24, Sm 2A, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Thanks to the use of solar energy, a water-recycling system, and composting toilets, this tranquil hotel has little impact on the environment—and its luxuriant garden blocks the heat and noise of downtown. Hammocks hang poolside, and wrought-iron tables and chairs dot the grounds. There's artwork throughout, much of it painted by the owner herself. Standard rooms are small and dated (think lace curtains and floral bedding) but all are clean and have kitchenettes; newer executive rooms are larger and have hardwood floors. Rooms on the second or third floor overlook the pool, while those on the first floor are dedicated to families. Another perk is the small spa, where you can get honey massages for a third of what you'd pay in the Zona Hotelera.

Pros

  • Eco-friendly
  • Affordable spa
  • Walking distance to El Centro's shops and restaurants

Cons

  • Simple and musty rooms
  • Alcohol is not served at the hotel restaurant
  • Mosquitoes in common areas

Hotel Adhara Cancún

$ | Av. Náder 1, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Not only does the circular lobby of this hip, hacienda-style property have a martini bar but it's also decorated with illuminated onyx stone, marble floors, and teak furnishings accented with gray and cream cushions. Many of the rooms, which are done in neutral colors, are pleasantly decorated with Mexican wall prints and wrought-iron beds. All pool-facing rooms have balconies; fourth-floor executive rooms are larger, quieter, and have smart TVs, but they lack the pool view. The hotel's second Margaritas wing has a more casual feel than the main building.

Pros

  • Well-equipped business center
  • State-of-the-art gym equipment
  • Available handicapped-accessible units

Cons

  • East-facing rooms tend to have street noise
  • Lights in rooms are movement triggered
  • Far from the beach

Hotel Casa Turquesa

$ | Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 13.5, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

On a hill overlooking the ocean, this all-suites boutique hotel doubles as an impressive gallery showcasing works by famous artists. A far cry from the towering all-inclusives lining the boulevard, it resembles a royal villa with marble floors, bronze statues, a grand piano, ornate chandeliers, and a winding staircase leading to the top-floor rooms. Each has a private terrace with a whirlpool tub; bathrooms are enormous with a vanity area and separate tub and shower. In addition to two on-site restaurants, there's a pool bar, and a meal plan is available on request. A business center and spa round out the offerings. Although children are permitted, the hotel caters mainly to adults.

  • 24-hour room service
  • Intimate, personalized feel

Hotel NYX Cancún

$ | Blvd. Kukulcán, Km 11.5, Cancún, 77500, Mexico

Here's a hotel that's funky and fun, catering to young adults with its chic lounge bar, ambient music, and hot-pink billiard tables and rugs that match the property's bright exterior. Top-floor rooms have excellent views, but the spiral staircases in the tower buildings are taxing. There are three restaurants and three pools, with one dedicated to children. The food is very good, though you're within walking distance of other restaurants, as well as shops.

Pros

  • Gracious staff
  • Reasonable rates
  • Close to shops

Ibis Cancún Centro

$ | Avs. Tulum and Nichupté, Sm 11, Cancún, 77504, Mexico

Within walking distance of Las Américas Shopping Center and next to a grocery store, this hotel is perfect for mixing business with pleasure at a very reasonable price. Rooms are modern yet cozy, with hardwood floors, plasma TVs, free Wi-Fi, comfy duvets, and either city or lagoon views; rooms on the seventh and eighth floors are best. Despite its location, this chain hotel is surprisingly quiet. Rates are about one-fourth what you'd pay in the Hotel Zone, so expect shortcuts like shampoo dispensers rather than bottles and showers rather than tubs. A buffet breakfast (extra charge) is served from 6:30 to 10; guests with the midnight munchies can take advantage of the 24-hour restaurant.

Pros

  • Clean, bright rooms
  • Free underground parking
  • Car rental agency and tour operator on-site

Cons

  • No pool
  • Mainly caters to business and budget travelers
  • Hotel will not sell alcohol on Sunday
