Grand Resort Bad Ragaz

$$$$ | Bernhard-Simonstr., Bad Ragaz, 7310, Switzerland Fodor's Choice

With three interconnected hotels, seven restaurants, four bars, its own private wellness area, and a direct connection to the Tamina Therme thermal spa complex—not to mention a huge park and stunning mountain views—this superlative resort offers a little something for everyone. The Grand Hotel Quellenhof features spacious, luxe rooms with walnut parquet floors, touches of modern art, and balconies overlooking the lovely green space in front of the property. Spacious bathrooms use natural stone; showers sparkle with gold tiles. The Grand Hotel Hof Ragaz has a more traditional style, while the Spa Suites feature their own private spa areas with whirlpool bath, sauna, and steam shower. Restaurants include Michelin-star options serving elegant Swiss cuisine, plus Asian and Mediterranean eateries. You can sample the waters at the gorgeous and historic Helena Bath indoor pool, dating from the 19th century—exclusively for hotel guests' use—or take a dip in the outdoor Garden Pool. There’s also a small spa with whirlpool, steam room, and sauna; 8- and 9-hole golf courses; minigolf; and substantial 24-hour gym. Aside from all that, hotel guests also have free access to the adjacent (and enormous) Tamina Therme. Kids won’t feel left out either, with the Children’s Villa kids’ club, plus their very own spa area.

Pros

  • Wonderful amenities for kids
  • Amazing food
  • Spectacular spa area

Cons

  • Rooms differ greatly in quality
  • Spa can get quite crowded
  • It's easy to get lost in the maze of hallways

Heidihof Hotel

$ | Bovelweg 16, Maienfeld, 7304, Switzerland

At the kitsch-happy farmhouse that's been expanded to a small inn, you can have a snack and take in the view or spend the night; rooms are basic but tidy and functional. The restaurant serves up local specialties, and there's a lovely terrace where you can enjoy a glass of wine. As you'd expect from a hotel in Heidiland, kids are very welcome; keep them occupied in the attached Peter & Heidi Playground.

Pros

  • Short walk to Heidi's Village and hiking trails
  • Fun setting for Heidi fans
  • Peaceful location

Cons

  • Very simple rooms
  • Extra charge for breakfast
  • A bit pricey overall for what you get

Schlaf-Fass Riesling-Silvaner Maienfeld

$$ | Bündte 1, Maienfeld, 7304, Switzerland

For a unique experience, you can sleep in an 8,000-liter wine barrel amid the vineyards below Heidi Village (or a second location nearby in Jenins [Schlaf-Fass Blauburgunder Jenins]); the aged oak barrels are decked out in red-and-white plaid and surprisingly cozy. Although the bed takes up most of the space, you can enjoy your optional fondue dinner (with wine included) outside on a massive wooden picnic table with stellar views or, if the weather's not good, in an adjacent oak barrel outfitted with a table. Guests also get homemade regional specialties in a picnic basket and a delicious breakfast spread. The host and hostess are both winegrowers, and knowledgeable about the wines of the region. Heidi Village is just a pleasant 15-minute stroll away.

Pros

  • Unique location
  • Short walk to Heidi Village
  • Tasty fondue dinner and hearty breakfast

Cons

  • No showers
  • Toilets in the farmer's house
  • Rooster and cows on the farm can wake you up early

Swiss Heidi Hotel

$ | Werkhofstr. 1, Maienfeld, 7304, Switzerland

Though there's not much local charm (and nothing particularly "Swiss" or "Heidi" about the hotel), the double rooms are clean but simple and the suites are modern and much larger, all for a reasonable price for the area. An easy-to-get-to location off the motorway and near the train station makes this a practical base for discovering the region or conducting business. You can get a basic meal at the on-site bistro, or grab a drink at the lounge, open only in the winter.

Pros

  • Ample, free parking
  • Buffet breakfast included
  • Rooms are clean and comfortable

Cons

  • 20-minute walk to town
  • No air-conditioning
  • No particular charm
