2 Best Hotels in Stockholm, Sweden

Background Illustration for Hotels

The last few years have brought with them a welcome surge in new hotels, including the Scandic Grand Central Hotel (next to the train station) and Radisson Blu Waterfront Hotel (near the waterfront congress center). Although the hotel choices here are often not as trendy as those found elsewhere, they are plentiful and full of variety, from hostels on up to five stars. Most hotels here have a distinctly Scandinavian design sensibility. Who needs the latest designer interior when there are plenty of fresh, nonfussy, reasonably elegant, and endlessly functional places to stay? Although Stockholm has a reputation for prohibitively expensive hotels, fairly good deals can be found in summer, when prices are substantially lower and numerous discounts are available. More than 50 hotels offer the "Stockholm Package," which includes accommodations for one night, breakfast, and Stockholmskortet, or the Stockholm Card, entitling the cardholder to free admission to museums and travel on public transport. Details are available from travel agents, tourist bureaus, and the Stockholm Visitor Center.

Rival

$$$ | Mariatorget 3, Stockholm, 118 91, Sweden Fodor's Choice

Owned by ABBA frontman Benny Andersson, the Rival is cool, but never to the point of being cold. Rooms here are full of delightful ideas—such as the bathroom's glass wall that lets you watch TV from the tub—and are stylish but still comfortable. Heavenly bedding, plump armchairs, and a teddy bear provide a cozy counterpoint to the modern art, oversized photographs, and funky lamps and fixtures. Explore the common spaces and you'll find two very cool bars, two bistros, and a restored movie theater.

Pros

  • Quiet location close to subway and Gamla Stan
  • Lively public areas
  • Long breakfast hours

Cons

  • Some rooms lack temperature controls
  • Rooms can feel a bit dark
  • Some very small rooms

Berns Hotel

$$$ | Näckströmsg. 8, Stockholm, Sweden

Berns Hotel has been a hot spot since the late 19th century; rooms here have hardwood floors, off-white walls, feather-stuffed quilts, and throw pillows and curtains in muted tones, all complemented with modern artwork. Many have French balconies. The beautiful restaurant—the first Chinese restaurant in Sweden when it opened in the 1940s—now serves some of Stockholm's best modern Asian food. The hotel also has several popular bars, including a cocktail bar, an upstairs bar overlooking the restaurant and its magnificent chandeliers, and a summer terrace with live music facing Berzelii Park and Nybroviken.

Pros

  • Stylish rooms
  • Stunning restaurant
  • Great location

Cons

  • Some rooms are on the smaller side
  • The bar can be loud on weekends or during events
  • Corridors could use updating
