Casa Blasquico

$ | Pl. la Fuente 1, Hecho, 22720, Spain

Casa Camper Barcelona

$$ | Elisabets 11, Barcelona, 08001, Spain

A marriage between the Camper footwear empire and the (now defunct) Vinçon design store produced this 21st-century hotel halfway between La Rambla and the MACBA (Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art), with a focus on sustainability (think solar panels and water recycling). There's a free 24-hour snack bar in the lobby, and an honesty bar on the rooftop terrace. Rooms require a tolerance for splashy red accents; those on the garden side of the hotel all have separate sitting rooms across the corridor, complete with hammocks and sofa beds. The cocktail bar downstairs features British club–style deep leather armchairs and two billiard tables. The Dos Palillos restaurant next door is worth a visit for its experimental takes on Asian-fusion cuisine.

Pros

  • Excellent Dos Palillos restaurant on-site
  • Rooftop terrace with honor bar
  • Complimentary 24-hour snack buffet

Cons

  • Expensive for what you get
  • Surrounding area is a bit seedy
  • No in-room minibar

Casa del Poeta

$$$$ | Calle Don Carlos Alonso Chaparro 3, Seville, 41004, Spain

Up a narrow alleyway, behind an ordinary facade, a 17th-century palace that was the haunt of Seville's poets at the end of the 19th century is now an oasis of calm. Centered on a marble-arch patio with walls in the city's hallmark red and ocher and permeated by the scent of jasmine, the palace has been restored to its former glory, preserving all its original elements. Guest rooms are light and airy, and some have intimate views of roofs and gardens. Dark wood features heavily, in keeping with the hotel's past, and the rooftop terrace takes in the lovely dome of Santa Cruz church as well as a good view of La Giralda. Breakfast is included in the room rate if you book direct.

Casa Rural Torre Lombarda

$ | Praza Torre Lombarda, Spain

Though this rustic, well-kept inn is a mere 20-minute drive from the city center, its natural surroundings and open-armed hospitality make you feel like you're much farther afield. The stone building's story begins in the 15th century, when it was part of the city walls; later, it would become a tannery and an aristocratic estate. Rooms are minimally decorated with white curtains and linens, bare stone walls, and shiny red headboards, and two are individual, ideal for solo travelers.

Pros

This boutique hotel set in the meticulously restored former home of one of Barcelona's most notable architects is sure to make design lovers swoon. Castillo de Corvinos

$$$ | A-131 92, Huesca, 22112, Spain

Catalonia El Pilar

$$ | Calle Manifestación 16, Zaragoza, 50003, Spain

Overlooking the lovely Plaza Justicia and the baroque Santa Isabel church, this early-20th-century Art Nouveau building is a tourist sight in its own right, featuring an original Moderniste wooden elevator and a facade with wrought-iron decorations. These charming features are complemented by polished, contemporary interior decoration and a restaurant serving traditional Aragonese dishes. Rooms are functional, with all the necessary modern amenities, but they lack the charm of the rest of the building. The hotel's central yet peaceful location makes it an ideal base to stroll to the sights without feeling overwhelmed by the crowds.

Pros

  • Spotless and efficient

Cons

Catalonia Puerta del Sol

$$$ | Calle de Atocha 23, Madrid, 28012, Spain

The regal cobblestone corridor leading to the reception desk, the atrium with granite ashlar walls, and the magnificent wooden staircase (presided over by a lion statue) reveal this building's 18th-century origins. Other common areas, including the restaurant and a reading room with a small library, have less character. Dark wood paneling, parquet floors, and charcoal pillows and throws lend hotel rooms an air of corporate blandness, though you can overlook a little blah for spaciousness (rooms start at 225 square feet) and value.

Pros

  • Grand quiet building
  • Offers family rooms

The Corner Hotel

$$$ | Mallorca 178, Barcelona, 08036, Spain

This hip hotel, positioned (yes, you guessed it) on a corner, has been fashioned from a handsome, turn-of-the-century building within a few blocks of Gaudí’s key sights on Passeig de Gràcia. The rooftop terrace has a fabulous pool and panoramic views that span the city center from Montjuïc to the Sagrada Família. Rooms are comfortable, melding neutral tones and industrial design, and come with nifty technology such as Bluetooth connection so you can play your own music, if you wish. Go for a Corner Room for more space and natural light. Downstairs, in the distinctly vibey lobby-bar, there is live music on most evenings and locals and guests intermingle from morning until night. In winter, don’t miss settling down with a drink by the open fire.
