THE BEST HOTEL IN SPAIN

Hotel Can Quetglas

$$$$ | Santa Rita 13, Palma, 07014, Spain
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

If you're a fan of Catalan modernism, you'll enjoy Hotel Can Quetglas. Built from a private residence dating back to 1908, a student of the famed Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí constructed the property’s exterior. You’ll spot similarities if you’ve been to Barcelona’s Casa Vicens. The rooms are enormous for being a city hotel, and a charming pool on the back terrace is perfect for a summer swim accompanied by wine or a good cocktail. What makes this property special is the neighborhood. El Terreno is one of Palma's best-kept secrets and a perfect place to discover a more local side of the island. Head over to Gomila Square and glimpse interesting architecture and charming local shops.

Pros

  • Great location and neighborhood
  • Tasty breakfast in the lobby
  • Roof terrace with views

Cons

  • Street parking can be a problem
  • Rooms have thin walls
  • Basic decor and amenities

Hotel Espléndido

$$$$ | Passeig Es Traves 5, Port de Sóller, 07108, Spain
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Built in 1954 and renovated in 2005, the Hotel Espléndido is the perfect place to stay and enjoy views of the Puerto de Sóller. Touched with Scandinavian charm, each room has a view of the Puerto, and you are bound to feel your shoulders drop when waking up to those views. Each hall is decorated with varied art pieces, and even though there are 74 rooms, it feels like a small port-side hotel. There are two restaurants on the property, but if you're looking for a moment in the sun, it's highly recommended you sit outside on the terraces with direct views of the Sóller beach trams. It's a moment that any type of traveler will enjoy.

Hotel Torre del Remei

$$$$ | Camí del Remei 3, Bolvir de Cerdanya, 17539, Spain
Fodor's Choice

FODOR’S EXPERT REVIEW

Built in 1910 for the daughter of a wealthy Barcelona banker, this luxurious boutique property is secluded among the fir and sequoia trees of the Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park. Along with design elements combining a Gothic castle with those of a French château, look for modernist Art Nouveau details resembling those of famous Catalonian architect Antonio Gaudí; the estate's architect was one of his disciples. Rooms and suites are exceptionally comfortable and smartly designed, and the sprawling grounds are a tranquil respite in any season.

Casa Morisca

$$ | Cuesta de la Victoria 9, Granada, 18010, Spain Fodor's Choice
Casa Morisca, Granada
Courtesy of Casa Morisca

The architect who owns this 15th-century building transformed it into a hotel so distinctive that he received Spain's National Restoration Award for his preservation of original architectural elements, including barrel-vaulted brickwork, wooden ceilings, and the original pool. Opened in 2012, Casa Morisca is named after the term that was given to the Muslims who stayed on in Granada after the city came under Catholic rule in the late 1400s. Many of these Moriscos were artisans who decorated houses using materials and designs traditional to their culture, such as arches and wooden ceilings. Though the guest rooms aren't large, they have a heady Moorish feel as a result of their wonderful antiques and unique ceilings; some also have views of the Alhambra and Albayzín, and all have minibars and free Wi-Fi. (Even if you don't stay in it, ask for a look at the bridal suite, with its intricately carved and painted wooden ceiling.)

Pros

  • 24-hour bar service
  • Beautiful patio garden with views of Torre de Comares
  • Easy parking

Cons

  • Stuffy interior rooms
  • No restaurant on-site
  • Slightly outside the town center

Boutique Hotel San Roque

$$$ | Calle Esteban de Ponte 31, Garachico, 38450, Spain Fodor's Choice

Museum-quality art by well-known painters lines the walls of this Bauhaus-inspired design property occupying a colonial palace in the old town. Each of the 20 rooms is uniquely decorated with collectible furniture, and there's a palm-fringed pool that's kept warm year-round. As you tour the public areas surrounding the traditional Canarian patio, don't forget to look up: the traditional astilla (\"splinter\") ceilings, fashioned out of interwoven twigs, are works of art in themselves.

Pros

  • Art by renowned artists
  • Paradisiacal pool and spa
  • 17th-century building with great bones

Cons

  • Kids not allowed
  • Rooms and bathrooms a bit gloomy
  • Cold when the weather is uncooperative

Boutique Hotel Ses Bruixes

$$$$ | Carrer de San Fernando 26, Maó, 07702, Spain Fodor's Choice

Built in 1811 by a Spanish ship captain, this casa señorial (town house) in the heart of Mahón was lovingly restored by architect and co-owner Fernando Pons as a boutique hotel. The restoration preserved even the original tower and its widow's walk. Rooms have queen-size beds, high ceilings with exposed beams, working fireplaces and wood-burning stoves (a plus in Menorca's blustery winters), original tile floors and antique furniture, ample stall showers, and deep oval tubs. Luxurious extras include robes and slippers, towel warmers, and huge mirrors. Dinner is served from Thursday to Sunday, and the café offers breakfast, brunch, and afternoon tea daily. The best room is No. 1, with a private terrace overlooking the interior patio.

Pros

  • Amiable, eager-to-please staff
  • Strategic location
  • At-home atmosphere

Cons

  • Difficult to reach by car, though there is free public parking a few minutes' walk away
  • Bathtubs in the bedrooms sacrifice privacy to design
  • Thin walls
