In northern Extremadura, the fertile La Vera region sits at the foot of the Gredos mountains, which are usually snowcapped through June. With its wildflowers, mountain vistas, and world-famous Yuste Monastery, the area welcomes hordes of tourists, especially in spring, its most beautiful season. One of the favorite souvenirs to take home is La Vera's famous smoky paprika—pimentón, available in three types: dulce (mild), agridulce (medium), and picante (hot). You're likely to see strings of red peppers hanging out to dry on the windowsills of area homes.
