start in Madrid or Seville?
Hello,
I’m planning a 2026 spring/summer trip to Southern Spain and would love some advice on whether it makes more sense to start in Seville or Madrid.
We’ll depart the U.S. on May 15 and fly to Malta on June 3. Ideally, we’d start in Seville since it tends to get hotter earlier than Madrid, and the Madrid–Malta flight is at a better time than the Seville–Malta option.
However, flights from the U.S. to Seville mostly arrive late in the day, while flights to Madrid arrive early enough to make use of that first day.
Would it make sense to fly into Madrid and take the train straight to Seville on arrival, then work our way north?
We’ll mix culture/history with nature and birding (my husband is an avid birder), so while I had envisioned using trains where possible, I think we will need to rent a car for the majority of the trip due to rural areas and nature parks. We won’t use it in the cities.
Here are the two itinerary options I’ve drafted:
Option 1 – Start in Madrid
May 16–17 Madrid (3 or 4 nights)
May 18 Segovia (day trip; sleep in Madrid)
May 19 Toledo (day trip or overnight)
May 20–22 Cáceres (3 nights, with Monfragüe NP & Mérida day trips)
May 23–24 Córdoba (2 nights)
May 25–26 Granada (2 nights)
May 27–29 Ronda/White Villages (3 nights in one location with day trips + nature/birding)
May 30–June 2 Seville (4 nights, with Doñana NP day trip)
June 3 Fly to Malta (6 PM)
Option 2 – Start in Seville
May 16–19 Seville (4 nights with Doñana NP day trip)
May 20–22 Ronda/White Villages (three nights in one location with day-trips + nature/birding)
May 23–24 Granada (2 nights)
May 25–26 Córdoba (2 nights)
May 27–29 Cáceres (3 nights, with Mérida & Monfragüe NP day trips)
May 30–June 2 Madrid (4 nights with Toledo & Segovia day trips OR May 30 overnight in Toledo)
June 3 Fly to Malta (8:30 AM)
We prefer 3-4 night stays where possible but can handle a couple of 2-night ones, and would consider staying overnight in Toledo if that is better than doing it as a day-trip.
Any thoughts on which direction makes more sense—both in terms of logistics and weather—and whether the mix of train and car travel seems practical?
Thanks in advance!

I'll only touch on two things:
What is your departure city? I fly NYC-SVQ and my flights do not arrive late in the day. So check that, depending on where you will fly from.
For birding, I believe that the COTA DE DONANA National Park is the ultimate area in Andalucia and among the best in Europe.
https://www.discoveringdonana.com/do...ural-calendar/
You could combine a tour there with Seville, adding either Sanlúcar de Barrameda, or Cadiz, in place of Ronda.
If you are looking for a beautiful "white town" , there are many in the province of Cadiz that attract fewer tourists than Ronda. Medina Sidonia, Vejer de la Frontera, and others.
I agree that a car would be good, as long as you limit or eliminate driving inside cities.

You’re considering the factors I would consider in making your decision (weather, flight options), but my reaction to the transatlantic flight is a bit different: I can never manage to enjoy a full day in Europe when arriving early. Instead, jet lag wipes me out and leaves me feeling spacey and groggy for most of that first day. In contrast, if I land a bit later, I can walk around for a while, maybe visit one site, savor a nice meal, and get to bed early, and that leaves me prepared to enjoy the next day. YMMV.
IMO, Toledo is definitely worth an overnight! I was glad to have two very full days there, and IME, it feels quite different at night -- evocatively so.
I could be wrong, but as I read your plan, I think the car would be most useful for the sections in Caceres and Ronda. I’d consider re-routing to put those stops next to one another so, even thought it might not be the most logical routing, so that you don’t have to deal with a car while in Cordoba or Granada.
Hope that helps!

Or, rather than change your routing, park the car in those cities, either at a hotel or(expensive) or a parking garage (less expensive). It is not at all difficult to drive into Cordoba.
I've not driven into Granada so can't speak on that, but with GPS there's no drive that's truly daunting, as long as you are not driving a Hummer on a narrow street lined with cars already parked!

Thanks, all, for your helpful responses!
@ ekscrunchy - Cota Donona National Park is on my list for day-trips out of Seville. My husband will love that! I am very curious about your direct flights from NYC-SVQ. I have searched and searched, and cannot find a single direct flight from anywhere in the US to Seville. I wonder if they discontinued that route or perhaps I am looking too early and it isn't posted yet.
@kja - I have also always struggled with jet lag when flying east. Luckily, I get a prescription from my Dr that allows me to sleep on the plane so that I can adapt more quickly. Since we have to try to minimize days off work, we really like to make use of the first day, but I hear you that it would be nice to arrive late and not have to wait so long to go to bed!! Thanks for your advice about Toledo and the car.
I am thinking we will EITHER rent a car when we leave Seville, use it for the White Villages portion, returning it in Granada / pick up a new car when we leave Cordoba, use it for the Extremadura portion, return it in Madrid OR rent a car when we leave Seville / return it in Madrid and just park it when we are in cities. I do worry the car will limit our hotel options. Because of my husband's enjoyment of birding, we often have to hit the road early, so we will not want to walk a mile to a car-park outside of town at the crack of dawn.
