An hour from Madrid, San Lorenzo del Escorial makes for a leisurely day trip away from the hustle and bustle of the Spanish capital. The medieval town’s main attraction is the Real Sitio de San Lorenzo de El Escoriala, the Royal Site of San Lorenzo of El Escorial. The easiest way to visit is on a guided tour. There are also a number of trains that leave every day from the Madrid Sol train station that will take you to El Escorial. You can take the C3 regional line from Atocha, Chamartin, Nuevos Ministerios, or Recoletos. The journey takes about an hour and the entrance to El Escorial is about a ten minute walk from the train station.
