Fodor's Expert Review Casa Montaner i Simó–Fundació Tàpies

Eixample Museum/Gallery

Built in 1880, this former publishing house, and the city's first building to incorporate iron supports, has been handsomely converted to hold the work of preeminent contemporary Catalan painter Antoni Tàpies, and a collection of works by many important modern artists that he acquired over his lifetime. Tàpies, who died in 2012, was an abstract painter, but was also influenced by surrealism, which accounts for the Núvol i Cadira (Cloud and Chair) sculpture atop the structure. The modern airy split-level gallery also has a bookstore that's strong on Tàpies, Asian art, and Barcelona art and architecture.
